Langstrath Falls

Page 5: Vagabundo Magazine Summer 2012

“These falls are located about a 2 hours walk at the far end of the Lang-strath Valley; one of the wilder valleys in England’s Lake District, with no road, lake or pub to draw tourists to its far reaches. The water flows down from Angle Tarn and Esk Hause, the highest mountain pass in the Lakes. I’m always drawn to a sense of passing time and movement in a still image, and with the surge of the water and the swaying of the tree anchored in place and time by the surrounding immutable rock and fells, this has it on different levels.”

going veggie in thestreets of SEOULwith

sarah kloke

It’s easy for a vegetarian to equate a country like South Korea with an outcome like “starving to death.” Af-ter all, this is a country where receiving a gift of SPAM (the meat, not the junk mail) - is actually a good thing. But be-yond the menus purely of pigs’ feet and chicken legs, are the opportunistic food stalls. Marked by yellow plastic ex-teriors and red plastic seating, here are the best options for staying alive as a vegetable-eater in the Land of the Morn-ing Meat Calm. Ddeokbokki.Found at all the typical food stalls, this dish of rice cakes (which are actually more like cylinders) and fluorescent-red spicy sauce is a nice introduction to street food. Take note though, ddeokbokki is often served with fish cakes (again, not a cake at all). Just point to those little triangles of fish and make an “x” to communicate the universal sign for “get those weird things away from me.Cost: ₩1,500 Directions: Take the Subway to Hongik University (Line 2) Exit 9. Turn left out of the exit and look for the square tabletop pot of ddeok-bokki at any of the food stalls gating this artsy university neighborhood.

BindaetteokBindaetteok translates to “mung bean pancake.” Looking nothing like a typical maple syrup pancake, this dish is made of ground mung beans, sprouts, kimchi, and green onions. It’s tossed onto a grill of heated oil and served with a side of onion soy sauce. You’ll soon start to reason that every single pancake should include ground up beans in its batter.Price: ₩1,500Directions: Subway to Jongno 5-ga (Line 1) Exit 5. Take the first right out of the station and walk through the Gwangjang Market. Once you get to the main 5-way intersection within the market, the bindaetteok stall is on your right.

HoddeokDessert is the favourite meal of most vegetarians because it is usually served without meat. And there is little competi-tion against the hoddeok. A doughy batter filled with cin-namon, sugar, and ground peanuts, this dollop of sweet is then feverishly flattened on an oiled hot griddle and served to patrons in a white paper cup. It’s the perfect example of “not enough of a good thing.”Cost: ₩1,000 Directions: Hoehyeon Station (Line 4) Exit 5 will bring you to Nam-daemun Market, one of the best places in Seoul to sample traditional Ko-rean street food. Look for the restaurant street, just past the accessory stalls. This is also where you will find the best hoddeok in the city.

an interview with Tomislav Perkoby Sarah Kloke

eternalsummerof thespotlessmind

A sun-bleached patio. A round of drinks covered with heat-induced condensation. The impending possibility of heat-stroke. What’s not to love about summer? For most, those three months of long days and even longer nights tends to makes the remaining three seasons seem almost bearable. But for Tomislav Perko, it’s not just a flirtation with this brief season. Instead, it’s the deciding factor for the next three years of his life.

LAUREN ALOISE

Facing the abyss of post-university life, Sebastian panicked and fled to the Middle East to gorge himself on fala-fal and try to learn Arabic. When not meandering hahazard-ly through distant countries, he spends his days poring over tea-stained maps in bookshop-cafes, playing about with his film camera and tapping away on an underwood typewriter. Despite clearly having landed in the wrong century, he has managed to find a space on the interweb to showcase his musings at sebastianlennox.wordpress.com and has even begun to tweet at @sebastianlennox.
