Introduction: Vadodara§ Vadodara, one of India’s most cosmopolitan cities, is located

to the south east of Ahmedabad, on the banks of river Vishwamitri

§ The district is referred to as the “Sanskar Nagari” (City of Culture) due to its rich cultural traditions

§ Vadodara is famous for its palaces, parks, temples and museums

§ Known as the ‘Gateway to the Golden Corridor’, as all the rail and road arteries that link Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad also connect Vadodara, including the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)

Economy and Industry Profile§ The industrial clusters include Chemicals and

Fertilizers, Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology,

Cotton textiles, Machine tools, Glass,

Engineering, Tobacco, Fisheries and Dairy

§ Major crops cultivated are Rice, Wheat, Sorghum

(Jowar), Yellow Peas, Grams, Oilseeds,

Groundnut, Tobacco, Cotton and Sugarcane

§ The district has huge reserves of Dolomite and

Fluorspar

§ Manufacturing plants of several private industry

players, as well as Public Sector Units (PSUs)

such as Gujarat Alkalis and Chemicals Limited

(GACL) and Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals

Ltd. (GSFC) are located here

§ The district is among the highest contributors to the total production of banana in the State (14.2%)

§ It is the largest producer of Brinjal in the State, contributing 12.6% to total production

§ Vadodara is the second largest producer of

Ø Guava (22.6%)

Ø Okra (13.4%)

Ø Tomato (12.7%)

Ø Turmeric (16.8%)

§ In addition, it is the third largest producer of papaya (9.7%) and custard apple (15.3%)

Minerals§ Mineral reserves include dolomite, fluoride, black

trap, quartz, fluorspar, agate, gravel, marble, graphite, manganese ore, and granite

§ Dolomite (7,200 lakh tonnes reserves) and fluorspar (116 lakh tonnes reserves) occur only in Vadodara

§ The district accounts for as much as 98% of the total production of dolomite in Gujarat

§ Fluorite is produced in Kwant taluka

Memoranda (IEM) filed, several sectors

showed major increase in investments over

a period of last two decades (1988 – 2007)

§ Investments in key industry segments such

as Chemicals, Boilers & Steam generating

equipments and glass showed a major

increase in the past decade (1988 – 1997)

§ The growth in investments in Chemicals

excluding fertilizers is almost 98 % over last

decade (1988 – 1997)

§ Other industry segments showing growth in

§ In the last decade (1988 – 1997), maximum

investments were observed in the sectors

such as Petrochemicals, Chemicals, Textiles,

Plastics and Pharmaceuticals

Economy Drivers§ The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor passes through Vadodara, making it a key destination for

attracting industrial investments

§ Vadodara is the exclusive producer of Dolomite and Fluorspar in Gujarat, offering scope for

tremendous growth in the processing industries

§ Several Government companies such as GSFC and GACL have their manufacturing plants in the

district

§ Gujarat’s leading educational institutions are located in Vadodara, offering skilled and intellectual

manpower in abundance for various industries and R&D activities

§ Proximity of Vadodara to key industrial centers of Gujarat such as Ahmedabad (via India’s first

Road, Rail & Air ConnectivityRoad

§ Vadodara is well connected to all major locations such as Delhi (1,028 km) and Mumbai (448 km) through DMIC and National Highway (NH) No. 8

§ NH 8 also connects Vadodara with Ahmedabad (111km), Rajkot (294 km ), Ankleshwar ( 84 km) Surat (167 km) – the major industrial centers of Gujarat

§ State Highway 6 connects the district with Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot among other districts

§ India’s first National Expressway is located in Gujarat connecting Vadodara to Ahmedabad (93 km)

Rail§ Vadodara is well connected to all major locations such as

Delhi and Mumbai, as well as other districts of the State

through a Broad Gauge railway line

Air§ Vadodara has a domestic airport at Harni, which is well

Water Supply§ Vadodara has 18,721 irrigation related wells and 69 km long water canals

§ Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz. Gujarat

Proposed Infrastructure Projects

§ An investment of INR 19 billion (USD 452 million)

is proposed under Jawaharlal Nehru National

Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for

infrastructure projects in the city

§ Ring Road development is envisaged to be

completed by 2010

§ A Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is proposed

to enhance existing public transport system

§ The Vadodara-Surat National Highway is

expected to be completed by 2012

§ Vadodara airport is proposed to be developed as
