1 UTS Shortcut Commands Reference Guide The 10 shortcut commands below are found in the Generic, Candidacy Review and Final Doctoral Project templates (unless otherwise specified). Please familiarize yourself with these shortcut commands. UTS Heading This is for formatting headings. Headings are bold and centered. They are always preceded by two double spaces. Please keep your headings short, no more than one line long. UTS Subheading This is for formatting subheadings. Subheadings are in italics and left-aligned. They are always preceded by two double spaces. Please keep your subheadings short, no more than one line long. UTS Paragraph Indent This is for formatting paragraphs that are indented. This applies to most paragraphs in your document. UTS Paragraph No Indent This is for formatting paragraphs that are not indented. This is usually applied to your Abstract paragraph or to a paragraph that elaborates or explains a block quotation that precedes it. UTS Block Quote This is for formatting quotations that are 50 words or more. UTS Block Indent This is for formatting quotations copied from full paragraphs, or from a portion that begins with a new paragraph. UTS Footnote Text This is for formatting footnotes—to their proper font size, spacing and indention. You probably will not need to use this since the footnotes are already pre-formatted in the templates. Note: Please consult Turabian when creating your footnotes. UTS Table Caption This is for formatting table captions. Table captions must be placed above the table. Please keep your captions short. UTS Figure Caption This is for formatting figure captions. Figure captions must be placed below pictures, images, charts, and graphs. Please keep your captions short. UTS Bibliography Text This is for formatting your bibliographies. This is only available in the Candidacy Review and Final Doctoral Project templates. The following shortcut commands are found in the Candidacy Review or Final Document template. These are already preformatted into the template. Please do not tamper with the parts that are already pre-formatted with these commands. UTS Front Matter Title This is for formatting all section titles prior to Chapter One or from Abstract to Introduction in the final document. UTS Shortcut Commands Reference Guide The 10 shortcut commands below are found in the Generic, Candidacy Review and Final Doctoral Project templates (unless otherwise specified). Please familiarize yourself with these shortcut commands.

UTS Heading This is for formatting headings. Headings are bold and centered. They are always preceded by two double spaces. Please keep your headings short, no more than one line long.

One double space before a block quotation. At the end of the paragraph, press Enter/Return once.

 

One double space follows a block quotation. Press Enter/Return twice.

One double space after each entry. At the end of each entry, press Enter/Return only once.

The shortcut commands comply with the Format Review Guide for the Candidacy Review Packet, the Format Review Guide for the Final Document, and Kate L. Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 8th ed. (Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press, 2013). The above examples are reprinted here, albeit with slight alterations, from the Final Documents of Patricia E. Bird and Thomas Peter Savastano.

Table captions are set to 11pts. Times New Roman to distinguish them from the rest of the texts. They must be placed above tables. Please keep them short.

Figure captions are set to 11pts. Times New Roman to distinguish them from the rest of the texts. Figure captions must be placed below pictures, images, charts, and graphs. Please keep them short.

When referring to figures or tables in your document do not capitalize them. Simply refer to them as “figure” or “table.” However, you may capitalize them when they begin a sentence.
