Using VPN and Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol to operate your

office computer remotely

Prerequisites:

1. College VPN access is automatically provisioned for active salaried employees and active Adjunct Faculty. Other employees and affiliated individuals can request VPN access as needed. Access to computing resources over VPN is limited according the security requirements of the computing resources and may not be available over VPN.

Step 1 – Prepare your office workstation for remote control:

Remote Desktop Settings for Office PC

To access the “Remote Desktop Settings” configuration panel, click in the search box on the taskbar, and type “remote desktop settings” and click on “Remote Desktop settings from the list (figure 1).

In this control panel we will turn Remote Desktop on, configure our power settings, make our computer

discoverable, and select users that are allowed to access this computer remotely (figure 2).

Office PC - Power Settings

Your office PC must stay turned on and be in an awake power state to be available for a remote

connection. In the “Power and Sleep” configuration panel, in the “When plugged in, go to sleep after” dropdown list select “Never”. Then, to return to the previous page, on the left in the grey panel select

“Remote Desktop”.

Office PC - Network Discovery

Network discovery is a network setting that affects whether your computer can see (find) other

computers and devices on the network and whether other computers on the network can see your

computer.

Office PC – Remote Desktop Users

Your user account must be allowed to connect to this computer remotely. If your username is not found

in either place in the control panel, please contact CNS for help.

Office PC Setup Summary:

At this point we have completed all of the tasks required to operate your office computer remotely.

1. We have turned Remote Desktop on.

2. We have configured our PC’s power settings. 3. We have turned on “Network Discovery” and “File and Print Sharing”. 4. We have designated user accounts that will have the privilege to connect remotely.

Step 2 - Establishing a remote connection to your office PC:

From your home computer, open Microsoft Internet Explorer. Edge, Firefox and Chrome are no longer

supported. In the address bar type:

https://vpn.mdc.edu

Enter your username and password and click OK (figure 6).

The connection will remain active until you click the “Disconnect” button (figure 7).

Step 3 – Connecting to your office PC.

On the taskbar, in the search box, type – Remote Desktop Connection, then click to select it (figure 8).

When you click on remote desktop connection you’ll get a connect dialogue (figure 9).

For “Computer” type the name of your computer and click connect. This will open a panel where you

will enter your logon credentials (figure 10).

Type your username in the format domain\username. In most cases this will be “mdcc\username”. Type

your password in the space provided. If you click in the “Remember me” box, you will not be asked for

credentials next time you connect. Click OK to connect. This will connect you to your computer here on

campus and you should be able to work as though you were at your desk.
