IIM 2016 Lesson Plan / Megan Wald

Using Augmented Reality to Engage Customers in Printed Media Grade Level Ten – Twelve Lesson Duration 8-10 Days Overview Students should have prior knowledge of design and video editing software and apps, as well as background in graphic design. Students will use software to create a logo for the business they have created, and are writing a business plan for. Students will use a logo they have created as an Augmented Reality trigger, leading to a student-created video demonstrating/advertising the product their business is marketing. Subject Matter Entrepreneurship- Marketing Learning Objectives Students will successfully design and create a logo trigger and video for an Augmented Reality marketing campaign. Standards ND Business Education Standards- Entrepreneurship

• Describe how emerging technologies have impacted the components of marketing (e.g., product, place, price, and promotion) (6.4b.1.12)

• Demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the business customs, etiquette, and communication styles of various cultures (4.2a.1.25)

Technology Components

• Software choices for logo design:

Adobe InDesign, Adobe PhotoShop, Microsoft Word, Paint, software of choice

• App choices for Augmented Reality: Aurasma, app of choice

• Internet connection for font and graphic downloads (for logo), YouTube and PBS videos, Aurasma app

• PBS Learning Media Videos:

The Psychology of Color, Emotion, and Online Shopping | BrainCraft http://prairiepublic.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/psychology-emotion-shopping-color-braincraft-1062/the-psychology-of-color-emotion-and-online-shopping-braincraft/ Commercial: Expression! http://prairiepublic.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/cb96ceb1-6399-4612-9d32-cac043dfccf1/commercial-expression/ Editor’s note: Since PBS is constantly adding and updating its resources, links are subject to change. Also, website reformatting may have affected hyphenation. Most resources can still be accessed by simply cutting and pasting the link into your browser, by entering the name of the resource into a search engine like Google, or the PBS Learning Media search box. Materials

• Computer lab station with appropriate software and internet connectivity • Devices with camera abilities, and appropriate apps such as Aurasma • Projector • Video example links of AR advertising • Grading rubric of final AR

Prep for Teacher

• Set up computer lab • Pre-load devices with Aurasma and a photo for use as a trigger, video for use as

an AR overlay (taken from Yearbook) • Find video examples from YouTube • Preview the links, bookmark PBS videos to be shown • Prepare a rubric for each student for the Culminating Activity

Introductory Activity Students should have prior knowledge of design and video editing software and apps, as well as background in graphic design. As a refresher, show students the PBS Learning Media video The Psychology of Color, Emotion, and Online Shopping | BrainCraft. To introduce students to Augmented Reality in print advertising, students will watch video examples of companies using AR in their print advertising. Teacher will have bookmarked and previewed current ad campaign videos. Students will be in the computer lab to register for an Aurasma account (this step is easier on a desktop computer, rather than a mobile device). All computers will be preloaded with an image and video to use in the lesson. Teacher will introduce students to Aurasma with a demonstration from the yearbook (How to follow a channel, and how to use a trigger to view a video). As a class, teacher will guide students through creating their own channel and creating an Augmented Reality video using the preloaded image and video. Learning Activity

After a refresher on plagiarism, Creative Commons, and intellectual property rules, students will be given class time to complete the following activities: Using the software of student choice, create an original logo for the business they have created. Logos should be colorful, with many design elements to be appropriate for use as a trigger.

Once the logo is created, students will create an advertisement/promotional video representing their product or business. The video should display the product or brand that the student’s business is selling. Regarding using Expression for their voice-overs in the videos, show students the PBS Learning Media video Commercial: Expression! Using Aurasma (or your AR app of choice), students will combine the trigger image (logo) with the video they created and upload it to their Channel.

Cross-Curricular Integration Activity The main learning activity utilizes cross-curricular integration in many ways: Step 1 (Logo Design)- integrates the arts. Students must utilize the color wheel while choosing colors, shapes, and fonts that complement each other and appeal to the business’ target market. Step 2 (Video Creation)- also integrates the arts. Again, students must utilize complementing colors, shapes, fonts, images, and music that complement each other and are true to the image of their business. Step 2 also integrates cultural awareness and students are ensuring that their video/advertisement is appealing to their target market. Culminating Activity Students will be given one day to present their logo in small groups. Students will discuss how their logo was created and why that design was selected. A second day will be given for students to follow their classmates’ Aurasma (or other app) channels. They will each have a copy of their classmates’ trigger images, as well as a rubric, and will evaluate the use of AR for each student’s business. (See next page for sample rubric)
