Using Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)

Apple Remote Desktop is a workstation control utility and has the following capabilities:

• Observing student computers

• Controlling student computers

• Sharing instructor’s and students’ screens

• Locking screens

• Text chat between student and instructor computers.

To launch Apple Remote Desktop:

Step One (Launching ARD): Once logged in to the instructor station, launch Apple Remote Desktop by clicking on the ARD icon located on the Dock, circled below.

Step Two (Launching ARD): Type the following username and password into the login prompt and click OK. Username: ard Password: ard!

Step Three (Launching ARD): Type the following Keychain Password into the password prompt, and click “OK”. Password: apple

Upon completion of steps 1-3, the following window will appear: This window is the main ARD console window. It displays a list of all of the computer stations in the room, the computers’ ID numbers, the user who is logged into a given station, the application the student is running and the computer’s IP address. This information is updated in real-time.

ARD functions are accessed and activated from the tool bar in the main ARD console window.

Observing another computer: You may observe any station in the room that a student is logged into.

The window that appears next displays the student’s screen. The title bar of the new window displays the ID of the computer being viewed and the window displays the student station activity. The screen shot below shows from the instructor’s perspective the student station being viewed. The student is presently viewing the UM-St Louis home page. To stop viewing the student station, simply close the window.

Step two (Observing): Click on the “Observe” button on the toolbar.

Step one (Observing): From the ARD console click on the station(s), which you would like to view.

Controlling another computer: This feature can be used to view and control any student station that is logged in.

Next a new window appears. The title bar of the new window displays the ID of the computer being viewed/controlled and the activity on the remote computer. The screen shot below illustrates from the instructor’s perspective the student station being viewed/controlled. To control

Step two (Controlling): Click on the “Control” button on the toolbar.

Step one (Controlling): From the ARD console, select the student station, which you wish to observe/control.

the remote computer simply mouse over the remote computer’s window and click or type as appropriate. To stop viewing/controlling the student station, simply close the window.

Sharing your screen or another screen other computers: This feature is used to project the instructor’s display to all stations or select stations in the room.

Step One (Sharing): In the ARD console window, select the target stations. (The stations with which you intend to share a selected screen.)

Select All Stations With the ARD console window active, select all stations by pressing: Apple key + ‘A’ Select Individual Stations Individual stations can be selected or deselected by pressing: Apple key + clicking on the station.

To stop sharing a screen: Repeat steps 1-2 above, selecting those stations you intend to stop sharing with. Then proceed to step 3 below.

Step two (Sharing): Click on the “Share Screen” button on the toolbar.

Step three (Sharing): Next the “Share Screen“ prompt will appear. To project the instructors screen to the target stations: Select “This Screen” from the drop down list box and click “Share.” To project another station’s screen to the target stations: Select another source station from the dropdown menu and click “Share”.

Locking other computers: The lock feature is used to lock student stations, so they may not be used.

Step 3 (Stop Sharing): Next the “Share Screen“ prompt will appear. Click the “Stop sharing with the computer” then click “OK”.

Step two (Locking): Click on the “Lock Screen” button on the toolbar.

Step Three (Locking): Next the Lock Screen prompt will appear. Click on the “Lock” button.

Step One (Locking): In the ARD console window, select the target stations. (The stations you intend to lock.)

Select All Stations With the ARD console window active, select all stations by pressing: Apple key + ‘A’ Select Individual Stations Individual stations can be selected or deselected by pressing: Apple key + clicking on the station.

To unlock the screens of the selected computers Repeat steps 1-2 above, selecting those stations you intend to stop locking. Then proceed to step 3 below.

Text Chat: Text chatting allows the person using the instructor station to chat with users on student s stations.

Step Three (Unlocking): Unlock the indicated stations by clicking the “Unlock” button.

Step Two (Chat): Next you must click on the “Text Chat” button in the toolbar, which is shaded above.

Step Three (Chat): Next the “Chat prompt” will appear. To confirm that you would like to begin chatting with the indicated stations, Click on the “Chat” button.

Step One (Chat): From the console window select a target station. (Note: ARD is capable of running multiple chat sessions at one time, however each session can only be with one other station.)

Step Four (Chat): Next a chat window will appear. From the instructor station type messages in the text area labeled “Your Message”. Student responses are seen in the text area, with student station designation. (“From ‘CC107M02’” in this example.) The chatting is real time, so what is typed is immediacy seen by both parties. To stop the chat session, click the “Done” Button.
