INTRODUCTION USB stands for Universal Serial Bus

The latest version of USB is named as USB 3.0 orSUPERSPEED USB.

Allows users to connect a wide variety of peripherals to acomputer and have them automatically configured andready to use.

The most important use of usb 3.0 is superspeed datatransfer upto 5 Gbps.

Implements to provide peripheral device quick andeasy for the user .

History of USB There have been three versions released prior

    to 3.0

USB 1.0 in January 1996 data rates of 1.5 Mbps up to 12Mbps

USB 1.1 in September 1998 first widely used version ofUSB

    USB 2.0 in April 2000

Major feature revision was the addition of a high speedtransfer rate of 480 Mbps

    Key Features Single connector type

Replaces all different legacy connectors with one well-definedstandardized USB connector for all USB peripheral devices

    Hot swappable

Devices can be safely plugged and unplugged as needed whilethe computer is running (no need to reboot)

    Plug and Play

OS software automatically identifies, configures, and loads theappropriate driver when connection is made

    ARCHITECTURE

    ARCHITECTURE

USB 2.0 has 4 wires: two data lines, power and ground.USB 3.0 uses an additional 5 wires two transmit lines, two receive lines and an additional ground for a total 9.

The extra wires constitute an additional bus that works inparallel with the HighSpeed USB 2.0 port.

Unlike USB 2.0, SuperSpeed USB can both send and

receive data simultaneously. This is called dual simplexsignaling.

ARCHITECTURE One other important change is that USB 3.0 is

asynchronous. Rather than broadcasting packets of data

to every USB device, the controller will send packets

asynchronously point-to-point, directly to the right

device by using information contained in the data

packets header. This eliminates the need for polling

devices having to constantly check if there is data to

    receive.

    APPLICATION General data transfer

USB implements connections to storage devices using aset of standards called the USB mass storage device class

USB 3.0 also supports portable hard disk drives .The

earlier versions were not supporting the 3.5 inch harddisk drives

    High resolution webcams, video cameras

ConclusionThe universal serial bus 3.0 is supporting a speed of

about 5Gb/sec i.e. ten times faster than the 2.0 version.

So hopefully by the help of this Superspeed data tranfer

rate the USB 3.0 will be replacing many of the

    connectors in the future.
