the showroom consists of an object in the void, similar to a piece of furniture in a room.

the object--staircase--creates the circulation pattern, defines the interior space, as well as acts as display for the eames collection. as the eames pieces are seen as individual, standout items in a room, the showroom attempts to show each piece as an individual. by giving each piece, or set, its own platform, it is allowed its own micro atmosphere.

the vocabulary of the eames chairs was translated in both material and tectonics. the envelope is constructed of industrial materials, steel and concrete, to create a contrasting environment so the furniture is seen as the human element drawing the viewers around the showroom. although the structural portion of each platform is concrete, the smaller steps, handrail, and main circulation path are plywood--relating to the material of the furniture as well as comfort. the staircase is constructed in a manner that is simple, but easily under-standable, and honest, much like the furniture.

the envelope is a simple glass box, a showcase for the staircase but also to continue the feel of the void from the street to the courtyard. the glass shell is then partially covered in a graphi-cally perforated cortin steel screen. the graphic of a sheet of plywood will relate not only to the products within the showroom, but also scaled to the size of the steel panel. as the screen will never been seen fully from the front in the narrow street, the perforations acting as daylight diffusing as well as an attention drawing detail as pedestrians approach.
