Cagliari is the regional capital of Sardinia. The town is situated in southern Sardinia on the homonymous gulf,

also called the bay of the Angels, surrounded by the Campidano plain and between Molentargius pond, and the lagoon of Santa Gilla. In common with Rome, Lisbon and Istanbul, Cagliari was built on 7 hills : Castle, Tuvu Mannu, Tuvixeddu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Colle di

Bonaria, Colle di San Michele.

The total urban area of Cagliari covers an area of 490.50 kilometers ²

and has a population of over 369 thousand

inhabitants (of whom 42% corresponds to the

city of Cagliari). The area has a density of

population of 754 inhabitants / km².

POPULATIONPOPULATION Between the '80s and the '90s in the

20th century the population of Cagliari was around 220,000. During this period four municipal districts became autonomous municipalities with some local referendums. So, due to this fact, Cagliari passed from about 220,000 to 160,000 residents.

In 2007, there were 158,041 people residing in Cagliari:

46.7% were male and 53.3% were female.

Minors (children ages 18 and younger) were 13.36 % of the population.

Retired people were 21.87%. The average age of Cagliari residents

is 46 compared to the Italian average of 42.

The districts

TUVIXEDDU - TUVIXEDDU - TUVUMANNUTUVUMANNU

The district takes its name from two hills, Tuvixeddu and Tuvumannu. Also here are important archaeological remains : the Punic necropolis. Tuvixeddu - Tuvumannu Stampace bordered to the east, north with Is Mirrionis, west and south with San Michele Sant'Avendrace.

These two districts are two neighboring districts in the north-east of the town. You can find here all services and facilities. Composed mainly by buildings of six -eight floors (average), it is mostly inhabited by middle class people .

Piazza Giovanni XXIII is the main square of this area . The surrounding area is actually a very vibrant sector of the city from a business point of view for the presence of many large stores, small shops, markets, schools, banks, hotels and restaurants.

The most representative building is the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari.

SANT‘ALENIXEDDA AND FONSARDA

This area is also home of the Liceo Scientifico Michelangelo. The Liceo Michelangelo currently consists of four branches: Piazza Giovanni XXIII branch, which houses the presidency and the offices of the school.

Sant’Elia

The district, the southernmost city, is located close to the area that once a swampy area near the lighthouse of St. Elia. The district consists of large and high buildings and is considered today the most degraded area of the city. In the district is also located the Cagliari Calcio’s stadium, witch is called Sant’Elia.
