Physical Description: The former Wollun Village precinct is located west of the railway crossing approximately 20.5 kilometres south of Uralla. Two abandoned shops (c1920) are notable relics. One is made from large ‘rock face’ concrete blocks with a skillion verandah. Another is weatherboard with a bullnose verandah. Both have gable fronts facing the street. The village includes shops, houses and tree lined streets. Vegetation includes a grove of conifers with large pine and eucalyptus trees. Wollun precinct has all the key elements that make up a village: c1920s abandoned shops (one with skillion awning, other with bullnose awning), an abandoned house, Existing house, a ruin, a grove of conifers, large pine and eucalyptus tree. South of the crossing opposite the road intersection inside a fence line is the rescues ‘Wollun’ railway sign, rare evidence of the former station

Further Comments: ••Develop a Wollun Precinct map and leaflet showing the village layout and history including a map, the former railway station, and relationship to Soldier Settlement Scheme•Include the ‘WOLLUN’ sign on a memorials register

Criteria a) The development of Wollun as a village was linked with the development of the Great Northern Railway Line and small scale farming and closer settlement in the district. It contains the many elements that make up a small village but now lacking people. Wollun’s decline indicates the greater mobility and depopulation of rural localities

Criteria c) The location of Wollun provides the opportunity to investigate the development of small communities along a major transport link; that is, the railway line. The New England region was marked by similar small communities that developed and then reduced in importance over time. The buildings have some interesting architectural features including concrete blocks and bullnose verandahs. The date of construction, the 1920s corresponds with the development of closer settlement in the area.

Criteria b) Historic association with the Great North Railway and the post World War One soldier settler schemes

The ‘faux stone’ concrete mould blocks are usual in Uralla and a rare survivor of this technology that had a short use about the time of World War One

Criteria d) Social significance of the village precinct arises from the development of the area and the sense of place that comes from the link between transport, education, religion and small business. The saving and relocation of the ‘Wollum’ railway station sign is an indications a strong sense of community remains and the railway crossing continues to be a key focus for the locality.

Criteria e) Wollun and its decline provides the opportunity to investigate the rise and fall of rural villages once found throughout rural Australia and along the New England Tablelands.

Criteria g) This disused village precinct is representative of people' greater mobility as they travelled by car to shop in nearby larger settlements and consequent de-population of rural Australia.

Item Name: Cemetery Ground on Deeping Grove StationLocation: 178 Ferris Lane, Saumarez Ponds [Uralla]

State Heritage Inventory Study Number179

Current Use: Closed cemetery

Former Uses: Family cemetery

Statement of Significance:

Deeping Grove Station burial ground is a small private family cemetery at Invergowrie. The cemetery has historical association with early pioneers of the Invergowrie and Saumarez Ponds, the Frost and Frazier families. The cemetery has the potential to yield information to contribute an understanding of the social and cultural history of the small rural areas by genealogical, architectural and artistic investigation. For a relatively small cemetery there is a diversity of headstones representative of the workmanship of a number of stonemasons. The cemetery is an important primary source for those researchers tracing family history. It is representative of the many small family cemeteries found in rural areas on private property. It has landmark, historical association, aesthetic, social and representative significance.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

The cemetery ground is on a farm that was established by Thomas Frazier. He arrived in Sydney on 26 June 1844 with his wife and family on the ship 'Briton'. As assisted migrants their passage was paid from the proceeds of land sold in New South Wales. After initially going to the North Coast, by 1846 they were in New England working on William Dangar's property, 'Kangaroo Hills'. In 1854 Frazier was on the Rocky River goldfields for two years, followed by a short period working for the Dangars on 'Gostwyck Station'. In about 1856 he bought a157 acre farm (sections 100-103) to the north and west of the Saumarez Lagoon which he called 'Deeping Groove' after his native village in Lincolnshire. On the property he grew wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and some fruit for which he found a market in Armidale and district. In the paddock north of the lagoon, he built his house from stone, hand-made bricks and slabs finished with an adze. There were also stables for the draught horses and a large harness house and store. The family recalled wedding receptions in this large building. Near the road was the beautifully constructed well. Thomas Frazier established the family burial place on the rise behind his 'Deeping Grove'

home. He chose a site above the Lagoon where earlier burials had taken place on the flat. A horse drawn hearse brought the coffins from the church to the nearby cemetery. In his will Thomas provided for the site and provisions for the upkeep. The cemetery contains the graves of all the first and second generation Fraziers with appropriately inscribed headstones. The most recent headstone is George Frost who died in 1948. He had married Sarah Ann Martin, grand-daughter of Thomas Frazier.

Physical Description: A small family plot located on a slight rise within Saumarez Ponds locality. The principal graves within this family cemetery, John Frazier (1837-1905) and his wife Elizabeth Frazier (1844-1906), both enclosed by an iron fence. Surrounding are the graves of the Frazier descendants and other persons who died while working on Frazier's property at Saumarez Ponds. Thomas Frazier died on 18 August 1895 and in his will he selected this site, bequeathing 20 pounds for the upkeep of the grave. The last internment was in 1948

Item Name: Gostwyck Memorial Chapel and precinct, GostwycLocation: 979 Gostwyck Road, Gostwyck [Uralla]

State Heritage Inventory Study Number180

Current Use: Memorial Chapel

Former Uses: Memorial and Family Chapel

Statement of Significance:

An incredibly evocative and peaceful place with heighten aural, sensory and visual aesthetics. The Memorial Chapel, Avenues of Elms and precinct generally at 'Gostwyck Station' has landmark, historical association, aesthetic, social, research, rarity and representative significance as a State Heritage Item, and includes Munsie Bridge at the egded of one Elm Avenue. The name 'Gostwyck' commemorates the early pastoralist Edward Gostwyck Cory. 'Gostwyck Station' has a historical association with Edward Gostwyck Cory, William Dangar, Henry Dangar, and more recently with the Wright, Giblin and Sutherland families. The construction of the Memorial Chapel and precinct is a landmark in the New England Tablelands. The architecture of the magnificent rare small chapel and its elm setting is a place of beauty and is a fascinating example of attempts by early pastoral families to create an English setting in the Australian landscape. The landscape is of aesthetic significance demonstrating the central position of the chapel located in the three converging avenues of trees. The Chapel and its setting has much social significance to the Dangar family and to the wider community. The construction of this church as a war memorial provides the opportunity for a study to investigate the types of memorials constructed after the Boer War and World War dedicated to the memory of those who served and paid the supreme sacrifice. The precinct also provides the opportunity to study 'Gostwyck' as a pastoral setting including the Chapel, former school, former community hall, garden and property store. The Memorial Chapel is representative of efforts made by the Dangar family to create a memorial following the death of their son and heir, Clive Collingwood Dangar 1882-1918 in World War One. The precinct is representative of moves by early pastoral families to create an English landscape by planting an extensive grove of elm trees leading to the Gostwyck homestead and towards Uralla.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

In 1832 Edward Gostwyck Cory took up Salisbury Waters which included Gostwyck Waters and the pastoral runs 'Gostwyck', 'Terrible Vale' and 'Salisbury Plains'. Cory sold the grazing rights to William Dangar in 1834. He then sold the run onto his brother Henry, the former Australian Agricultural Company, surveyor of the Hunter Valley. Henry Dangar then set out to improve the property. The Dangar brothers were involved in many business partnerships.

By 1838, Henry Dangar's depasturing licence, held for Peel's River and New England referred probably to the 'Moonbi' and 'Gostwyck' Runs. By 1839 Dangar's superintendent, James Sibley, was in charge of nineteen men, seventeen of whom were assigned convicts. At this stage there was already a woolshed at 'Gostwyck', as well as a house and four huts. 'Gostwyck' in 1848 comprised 89,000 acres and was but one of seven of Henry's runs. (A. Yarwood, National Trust Listing, March 1976)

By about 1850, Henry Dangar controlled over 200,000 acres in New England. Henry Dangar went to Europe to select Saxon rams which were to sire one of New England's most important sheep flocks. By the 1870s, over 75,000 sheep from his 'Yarrowyck', 'Paradise Creek' and 'Gostwyck' properties were washed and shorn at 'Gostwyck'.

Henry Dangar died in 1861. Two years later Arthur Hunter Palmer left 'Gostwyck' and Henry's widow, Grace Dangar took over the property. She died in 1969 leaving over 30,000 acres of grasslands and water frontages secured under freehold title. Albert Augustus Dangar then took the property over.Over time, there have been many subdivisions of the original 'Gostwyck' Run. In 1904 the area at Dangarsleigh including 'Chevy Chase' and 'Arthur's Seat 'were subdivided. There were further subdivisions of Gostwyck in 1909 and 1922 with five farms for returned soldiers from World War 11 established in 1959.

Ten years later in 1969, two owners Mrs Noreen Wright and her sister Mrs Patsy Giblin, great grand-daughters of Henry Dangar, dissolved their partnership and divided 'Gostwyck', with Salisbury Waters being used as the basis of the boundary between the two properties. The western side with the homestead retained the name Gostwyck and was kept by Mrs Wright. The eastern side, on which the historic woolshed stands, was renamed 'Deeargee', the name derived from the traditional Dangar wool brand DRG, to be occupied by Mrs Giblin's Sutherland family. ('Gostwyck and Deeargee', National Trust of Australia (NSW) Booklet, New England Heritage Week Tour, 28 April 2002, pp.6-7)

When A.A. Dangar inherited 'Gostwyck' from his father, he planted the avenue of elm trees and established the garden at the homestead. A.A. Dangar's son, Major Clive Dangar took over the property in 1911 and was killed during the 1914-18 War. His widow built the chapel at the end of the elm tree drive to his memory. The modern brilliantly coloured stained glass windows in the chapel are a feature of this small vine-coloured building, now used frequently by local families for weddings and small family events. ('Gostwyck Homestead, Uralla', National Trust of Australia (NSW) Booklet, New England Heritage Week Tour, 28 April 2002, p.8)

The site of the chapel was chosen by Ashley Clarendon Cox, wife of Major Dangar. The chapel built in 1921 was consecrated by Bishop Wentworth-Shield, Bishop of Armidale. The bricks were made and fired on the property. The furnishings, ornaments and accessories in

Gostwyck Elm Avenue is significant for demonstrating old style avenue planting designed to emphasize a route to a church. The intactness and the extent of the avenue in its rural landscape setting is uncommon (Criterion B.2). The avenues are significant for aesthetic reasons as follows:they provide a canopied route from three directions to a central terminus of a church which has old style charm and attractiveness; the extent of the simple formal planting creates an imposing feature, experienced from the tree lined approaches; together with the church, the avenues create a visual nucleus in a rural landscape with many historic features (Criterion E.1).

Three grand avenues of regularly planted elms converging on the small brick chapel of Gostwyck, and related church planting. The avenues are not all contemporary with each other and their date of planting is unknown. The avenues and church are set in a rural landscape and the church is an historic structure, with an old style garden, surrounded by a stone wall, with a simple wrought iron gate. The avenue accentuates the road intersection and the church is the terminal feature of the converging roads. There are over 100 mature elm trees providing an extensive canopied route in three directions. The church and avenues appears as a nucleus in a rural landscape setting which contains a number of historic features, including Gostwyck Homestead and outbuildings, which have been listed by the National Trust. Gostwyck Church is a brick Federation Gothic style chapel with parapeted gables and a terra cotta tiled roof. There are separate lower roofs over the chancel and a

Clive Dangar, veteran of the Boer War, enlisted and died of his wounds in Melbourne during his return trip to Australia.

The furnishings, ornaments and accessories in the little church were all presented by the immediate family or close friends. They consist of a Credence Table, Communion Rails and Table, Font, Prayer Desk, Lectern and Pulpit, Hymns and Psalms Boards. The three eastern stained glass windows were endowed by the sister, mother and wife of Major Dangar, in his memory. The two western windows were given in memory of Mrs N Gordon (previously Mrs Nora Dangar). These windows are the work of David Saunders and were dedicated in 1977. Two more recent windows, the work of Miss Pel Fesq, in the north and south walls, are dedicated in memory of Mrs B.J.F. Wright (nee Noreen Dangar) and Mr W. Situated to the south of the chapel are the remains of a small cemetery where people who worked on the property are buried. Close to Salisbury Waters are two graves covered by a single stone slab lying flat on the ground. Both are badly weathered. The first grave is Joseph Fossey and the second is Roderick Cruickshank, died 18 August 1852, aged 18 years.

There are three avenues of trees converging on the small brick chapel. There are over 100 mature elm trees providing an extensive canopied route in three directions. The avenues have been planted at different times. These trees accentuate the setting leading to the chapel as a central focus.

Physical Condition:

Modification Dates: The first planting of elms leading from the chapel to the 'Gostwyck' gates were planted in 1856. (Armidale Chronicle, 21 December 1921) Further trees were planted in the 1930s leading from the chapel westwards to Uralla.

The memorial chapel and the elm tree driveways is an intact setting and is well preserved and maintained.

Further Comments:

Criteria a)

Criteria c) The construction of the Memorial Chapel and precinct is a landmark in the New England Tablelands. The architecture of the magnificent small chapel and its elm setting is a place of beauty and is a fascinating example of and attempt by early pastoral families to create an English setting in the Australian landscape. 'The avenues are significant for aesthetic reasons as follows: they provide a canopied route from three directions to a central terminus of a church which has old style charm and attractiveness; the extent of the simple formal planting creates an imposing feature, experienced from the tree lined approaches; together with the church, the avenues create a visual nuceus in a rural landsacpe with many official features'. (Australian Heritage Database)

Criteria d) The Memorial Chapel and its setting has much social significance to the Dangar family and to other members of the community. It is a memorial constructed in memory of Major Clive Dangar who died during the Great War. Since that time, it has been the setting for many weddings, funerals and other religious occasions for the Dangar Family and also the wider

Criteria b) The Gostwyck Station has a historical association with Edward Gostwyck Cory, William Dangar, Henry Dangar, and more recently with the Wright, Giblin and Sutherland families. The development of the pastoral property demonstrates the relationship with the Australian Agricultural Company and the Dangar family who played a significant role in the development of the Pastoral Industry in the Hunter Valley and New England Tablelands.

Criteria e) The construction of this church as a war memorial provides the opportunity for a study to investigate the types of memorial constructed after World War dedicated to the memory of those who served and paid a supreme sacrifice. A comparison of private memorials can be made such as the Perrott Family memorial at Dangarsleigh. The precinct also provides the opportunity to study Gostwyck as a pastoral setting including the Chapel, former school, former community hall, garden and property store.

Criteria g) The Memorial Chapel is representative of efforts made by the Dangar family to create a memorial following the death of their son and heir, Clive Collingwood Dangar 1882-1918 in World War One. The precinct is representative of moves by early pastoral families to create an English landscape by planting an extensive grove of elm trees leading to the Gostwyck homestead and towards Uralla.

Criteria f) This is a rare brick rural church constructed of an English design. Most churches set within the Australian rural setting are constructed of timber with a galvanised iron roof. The intactness and extent of the Avenues of Elms in its rural landscape is rare. Together the Chapel and Avenues planting is rare at a State level

Integrity / Intactness: The memorial chapel and the elm tree driveways is an intact setting and is well preserved and maintained.

Statement of Significance:

The Arding Uniting Church is rare having an attached community hall built in 1952. Social significance arises from the building's continued use as a place of worship, a local meeting and celebration venue, a polling booth and general use by the community. It has an important historical association with the small rural community of Arding noted for its agricultural and fruit industries, the Wesleyan Movement, and Saumarez Station. It is representative of the way that rural communities developed with the establishment of churches, recreation reserves including a school of arts and a public school. The timber church is an excellent representative example of the vernacular carpenter ‘Gothic’ architectural style of churches constructed in small rural communities in the 19th century. It provides the opportunity for an investigation of the growth and in some cases, the decline of farming communities throughout the New England Tablelands. The timber weatherboard building is representative of small vernacular churches located throughout Australian rural communities. The Arding Uniting Church has landmark, historical association, architectural, social, research, representative and rarity significance.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

The Wesleyan Church celebrated 100 years in July 1883. The Arding Wesleyan Chapel was built at a cost of 143 pounds by Edmund Lonsdale, the builder of the Armidale railway station. Prior to this, early church services were held on ‘Bedford Farm’ owned by Thomas Wiggins for 10 years. At that time about 20 families made up the Arding community and contributed towards the building costs and provided voluntary labour. The Arding community was a farming/orcharding community situated between Armidale and Uralla. The name ‘Arding’ is derived from Henry Arding Thomas. Thomas and his wife Caroline owned the pastoral station ‘Saumarez’ from 1856-1874. Thomas purchased it from Elizabeth Sophie Dumaresq in 1856. 'Saumarez Station' was taken up as a squatter's run by

Lieutenant Colonel Henry Dumaresq in 1834-1835, being about 100,000 acres stretching from Armidale airport to Uralla township. Dumaresq died in 1838 and his widow ran the property with the help of her brother-in-law, until she returned to England in 1841. A provisional school was established in the Arding farming community in 1868. The Arding pubic school operated from November 1881 to December 1957, known as 'Rose Hill' until April 1898 when the name was changed to Arding. Arding once had two churches - Anglican and Methodist (now the Uniting) but only the latter exists. On Saturday 29 November 1952 a special service was held at the Arding Methodist Church preceeding the official opening of the newly erected hall. The Hon. D.H. Drummond M.H.R. spoke of the pioneers who had established the Church. A number of the former church members attended and Mr Davis Hughes M.L.A. After the service Mr Drummond opened the hall from the outside The hall, built by Norman Rixon assisted by voluntary labour, was constructed at the east end of the church and it continues to be used for community functions. Described in 1987 as 'a wonderful grove of pine trees that formed a courtyard of the most sublime quality', but these were removed in 2007. On 18 October 2004, state member for parliament Richard Torbay announced a grant for $11,000 to upgrade the hall and to remove then declared nearby dangerous pine trees.

Physical Description: A small timber church in the 19th century carpenter ‘Gothic’ style, with a hall addition at the rear. The building has a high gabled roof with a distinctive bargeboard and Gothic type windows. The hall measured 26 feet by 21 feet and was well finished. There is a front picket fence built in hardwood. The co-joined building is well maintained with a new ramp constructed on the northern side. The removal of the mature Grove of Pine trees in c2005 altered the landscape setting of the site. The shingle roof was replaced by corrugated iron in the early 1900s.

Criteria a) The Church demonstrates the growth, and the provision of religious institutions, and decline, of rural communities in the New England Region.

Criteria c) The timber church is an important example of the vernacular architectural style of churches constructed in small rural communities. Each faith adopted the same simple style of architecture and constructed their churches of timber.

Criteria d) Social significance arises from the building's use as a place of worship, a meeting place and a place of celebration for christenings, weddings and funerals. Other social significance arises from the use of the hall as a polling place for elections at the local, state and Federal government, meetings and many social activities.

Criteria e) The construction of the Uniting Church at Arding provides the opportunity for an investigation of the growth and in some cases, the decline of the many similar farming communities located throughout the New England Tablelands. Many of these communities constructed churches, community halls and public schools.

Criteria g) The timber weatherboard building is representative of small vernacular churches located in rural communities. It is also representative of the development of small rural communities and their desire to construct a nearby church. t is representative of the way that rural communities developed with the establishment of churches, recreation reserves including a school of arts and a public school.

Criteria f) The church is rare because it has a community hall attached to it. It is the only surviving church in Arding.

Integrity / Intactness: The church and hall is well maintained with a new ramp constructed on the northern side. All of the pines have been removed from the site.

Criteria b) Initially the Wesleyan Movement and now the Uniting Church has an important historical association with the small rural community of Arding; a community that developed significant agricultural and fruit industries. The name Arding comes from Henry Arding Thomas, and Caroline, who owned 'Saumarez Station' from 1856-1874.

The church has historic association with the Uralla Anglican parish, the residents of the farming community at Brushgrove, members of the Wiseman family buried in the grounds and the Reverend E.H. Stammer. The timber church is an important example of the vernacular architectural style of churches constructed in small rural communities. Social significance arises from the building's use as a place of worship, a meeting place and a place of celebration for christenings, weddings and funerals. The church provides an opportunity to investigate the growth of the Church of England throughout the New England Tablelands, and about a small farming community. The timber weatherboard building is representative of small vernacular rural churches. The Brushgrove church site has historical association, aesthetic, research, social, rarity and representative significance.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

The Church of England Parish boundary stretched west to Brushgrove. The timber and iron church was dedicated on St Matthew's Day in 1909 during the Reverend E.H. Stammer's third year of his tenure and performed by Archdeacon Lewis of Armidale. Dedication gifts included altar Cloth Miss Wiseman; altar rails Misses Hudson; sanctuary carpet Mrs J. Grattan and family; matting for the aisle Mrs George Carter (senior); carved lectern Miss Jennie Wiseman; prayer book and bible Mr and Mrs Wiseman; prayer desk Miss W. Statement of Significance:

Dangars Lagoon has landmark, historical association, aesthetic, social, research, rarity and representative significance. The Lagoon provides a valuable habitat for the breeding and feeding of water birds especially during drought periods and on migrations. It also provides an area for scientific research of the birds, aquatic plants and palaeographic investigations. The Dangars Lagoon historic importance is in understanding the complex relationship between the wetlands found along the New England Tablelands, the Aboriginal people as a source for food and materials, white settlers, miners and residents. Since white settlement Dangar's Lagoon was used for watering stock, recreation and hunting purposes. The development of the Lagoon finally as a wildlife refuge provides for a historical research project to investigate the use of the area as a source of water for mining at Rocky River, its use as a diverse recreational area and as a fauna sanctuary under the Fauna Protection Act. The Lagoon provides for a detailed study of flora and fauna particularly with migratory birds, study of importance of the wetlands chain to the New England Tablelands, and representative of actions by government authorities to protect flora and fauna.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

Dangar’s Lagoon is named after Henry Dangar. He arrived in Sydney from Cornwall in 1821 and was appointed as an assistant in the Survey Department under the Surveyor General, John Oxley. He prepared the plans for Newcastle and completed many surveys in the Hunter Valley. He returned to England to answer claims that he had used his public office for personal gain. In 1830 he returned to New South Wales with his wife, Grace, and young son to take up a position as surveyor with the Australian Agricultural Company. His survey of the Liverpool Plains was favourable and accepted by the AAC, which the government allowed its

claim to displace the squatters in the area. Dangar retired from the Company in 1833, built a home at Neotsfield near Singleton, and eventually took over New England properties of Paradise Creek, Bald Hills, Yarrowyck and Gostyck,. Henry purchased the pastoral run Gostwyck from his brother William in 1834, who gained the grazing rights from E. Gostwyck Cory in 1832.

The Lagoon: Dangars Lagoon and the nearby Racecourse Lagoon were extensively used by Aboriginal people as sources of food and materials. Mr H. Roman cut a water race from Dangar’s Lagoon in 1861 for mining operations at Rocky River. Reputedly its east side has evidence of stonework installed by Chinese labourers. In November 1869, William Dawson reported maliciously damage to works belonging to the Perseverance Water Company and offered five pounds reward. Brown's Paddock Gold IN 1870s Mining Company applied for a permit to use the lagoon as a reservoir, increase its capacity by an east side embankment and outlet at north end where Mr Roman’s had. The race route travelled west then due north. Later once the Brown's Paddock Company (later Brown’s Mining Company) finished their work, water was used for work at Mount Jones. The water was also used by the Chinese Gardens. In 1881 the secretary of the Progress Committee objected to railway plans to use water from Racecourse Lagoon, so proposed using Dangar Lagoon instead. By 1886 its water levels were lowest ever seen. In 1904 the Uralla Municipal Council applied to the Fisheries Department to release fish into Dangar’s Lagoon. Between 1906-1915 were repeated concerns about poor maintenance and potential break away of the eastern bank, correspondence noting the lagoon as a valuable national asset and objection to travelling stock access. By 1917 it was a noted picturesque recreation spot with innumerable water birds. In April 1925, the lagoon was declared a Bird and Animal Sanctuary and the name was changed to Dangar's LagoonDuring the 1930s the Lagoon was the location for picnics and carnivals included swimming, canoeing, diving and motor launches. In January 1933, the Australian swimming champion Andrew 'Boy' Charlton the world Olympic swimmer completed a number of exhibition swims in the lagoon. Measures were taken to beautify the Lagoon, such as planting pines and willows along east and north banks, and removing weeds. It was proposed to use the Lagoon as a town water supply but by 938 it was dry. In June 1940, the lagoon became a Travelling Stock Reserve administered by the Armidale Pastures Protection Board.During World War Two a steel jetty constructed by American servicemen stationed in Uralla, was used for washing their vehicles. In 1947 the Lagoon was transferred from the Pastures Protection Board to Gostwyck Shire. During the 1950-60s the CSIRO, National Parks and Wildlife Service and University of New England recorded bird numbers and species In 1961 the Armidale and Uralla Power Boat Club first sought to use the Lagoon for aquatic sports, eventually leading to the actions to declare it a reserve as a public recreation area, wildlife refuge and natural watering point for livestock with the Shire as trustees in 1966. At that time, action was taken to establish three breeding sanctuaries in the lagoon's dry bed.In 1972 Dangar's Lagoon was declared a Wildlife Refuge still under the ownership of the Pastures Protection Board Refuge no. 149- 11 February 1978. Prior to its gazettal as a Wildlife Refuge, the area was a fauna sanctuary under S22 of the Fauna Protection Act. In the 1978-1982 drought the north west corner was deepened by the Pasture Protection Board for the watering of stock.

Physical Description: It is a shallow lagoon with a relatively small catchment area situated just south of Uralla on the undulating landscape of the New England plateau of NSW, and approximately 1km to the east of the top of the Great Dividing Range. The lagoon is part of a unique system of about thirty wetlands known as the ‘New England Lagoons’. They are shallow, temporary upland lagoons and are important links in the chain of wetlands used by resident and migrating waterbirds. The depressions were formed by glacial action, followed by gradual sedimentation over thousands of years. Dangars Lagoon natural feature was amplified by a man-made earth bank along its south eastern edge. The predominant soil types are granite derived with areas of basalt intrusions. The lagoon lies within the catchment of the Macleay River, which flows to the Tasman Sea at South West Rocks. The surrounding vegetation was open forest woodland, since substantially cleared by European settlement. The combined effect of clearing and eucalypt dieback in this area adjacent to the Lagoon has led to a very bare landscape with the remaining trees suffering poor health. An unusual feature about the lagoon is its lunette shape. This geomorphoic feature forms during periods of low fluctuations in water level. Good populations of aquatic and semi-aquatic fauna and flora occur. Dangars Lagoon has always been a haven for wildlife including birds, turtles and eels. It is an important resting and feeding place for waterfowl. The very rare Uralla Green-billed thrush can sometimes be seen. The wetlands system is listed under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 as an 'endangered ecological community'. Protection and management is carried out under a voluntary agreement as a Wildlife Refuge and land tenure for a Travelling Stock Reserve. In the 1970s and 1980s, the eucalypt dieback combined with a number of droughts destroyed much of the once extensive tree cover around the lagoon. The dieback has led to a decline in habitat for terrestral birds and mammals. The pre-existing open forest community in the northern section of the Wildlife Reserve has been extensively impacted upon by clearing, dieback and grazing. The remaining trees on this section of the Reserve have all been killed by insect attack, with the understorey removed through grazing pressure. The lagoon is now a wildlife refuge and is also used for passive recreation. A wildlife viewing hide is now situated on the southern side of the lagoon.

Item Name: Beehive Well on Deeping Grove StationLocation: 178 Ferris Lane, Saumarez Ponds [Uralla]

State Heritage Inventory Study Number232

Current Use: Water well

Former Uses: Water well

Statement of Significance:

The beehive well is still intact and rare. The construction of the beehive well in the Invergowrie district is historically related to the small scale subsistence farming that developed in the Invergowrie and Saumarez Ponds area. 'Deeping Grove' Station was a farm established by Thomas Frazier in c1856. Aesthetic and technical qualities of the well arise from its design and skill of workmanship, and it demonstrates the need to store water for drinking, cleaning and other health purposes. It is representative of the working relationship that developed between small farming families, in this case, the Fraziers and Mundays. Its construction and its location provide the opportunity for an investigation of early water supply technology in rural districts and country towns. This is a rare surviving example of a brick water well built in a circular form in the shape of a beehive for added strength, and prior to use of galvanised iron or other storage methods. Construction of the beehive is representative of the skills of the early Australian farmers and the way that local materials, in this case bricks from a pastoral station, were used on local farms. The beehive well has landmark, historical association, archaeological, social, rarity and representative significance.

Historical Notes or Provenance:

A family history publication cites 'Near the road there was, and still is, a beautifully constructed well, delicately curved inside, lined with bricks, built by a fine craftsman, neighbour John Munday from the Lagoon Farm'. It is constructed home-made bricks from the Saumarez Lagoon Station. It is constructed in a circular form into the shape of a beehive.Saumarez Ponds was named by Colonel Dumaresq after his ancestor's home in Jeresy, England. Many of the early Australian farmers were subsistence farmers and developed various 'bushcraft skills' to construct homes, out-buildings, fences, water storage systems and tools.

Storage of water was a major problem. Early bark and shingles roofs prevented water harvesting until galvanised iron appeared, and this then led to the use of gutters, down pipes and water tanks. Underground storage tanks were also developed by digging of holes and using bricks as a lining with covers placed above the tanks. Bricks were initially made on properties by skilled workers until country towns developed brick industries, as in Armidale and Uralla.'Deepening Grove' Station was established by Thomas Frazier. He arrived in Sydney on 26 June 1844 on the ship 'Briton' with his wife and family of three boys and one girl, as assisted migrants whose passage was paid from the proceeds of land sold in New South Wales. Initially he went to the North Coast but by 1846 he in New England working on William Dangar's property, 'Kangaroo Hills'.In 1854 he was on the Rocky River goldfields and stayed for two years. For a short period he worked for the Dangars on 'Gostwyck Station'. In about 1856 he bought a farm of 157 acres at Saumarez Ponds (sections 100-103), which was to the north and west of the Saumarez Lagoon. The property was called 'Deeping Groove' after his Lincolnshire village of Deeping St James. He grew wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and some fruit for which he found a market in Armidale and district. North of the lagoon he built his house from stone, hand-made bricks and adze finished timber slabs, stables for the draught horses and a large harness house and store. The family recalled wedding receptions in this large building.

Physical Description: Saumarez Ponds is a rural place on Saumarez Creek about 3 kilometres south west of Dumaresq Railway Station. Local historian A Goode describes it as ‘beautifully constructed in a circular form into the shape of a ‘beehive’.

Further Comments:

Criteria a) History relates to occupation of the property Thomas Frazier. Historically underground wells were needed to store water for drinking, cleaning and other health purposes, especially prior to above ground galvanised iron. It is also representative of the working relationship that developed between families who lived in the district, in this case, the Fraziers and Mundays.

Criteria c) Aesthetic qualities of the well arise from its design and skill of workmanship displayed by the craftsman.

Criteria d) Noted in community studies and histories.

Criteria e) The construction of the beehive well and its location provides the opportunity for an investigation of early water supply technology in rural districts as well as country towns.

Criteria g) Construction of the beehive is representative of the skills of the early Australian farmers and the way that local materials, in this case bricks from a pastoral station, were used on local farms.

Criteria f) This is a rare example of a brick water that is well-constructed in a circular form in the shape of a beehive for added strength. Most underground wells have been destroyed or filled in as a result of the use of galvanised iron tanks, large fibre glass tanks or other storage methods.

Integrity / Intactness:

Criteria b) The construction of the beehive well in the Invergowrie district is historically related to the small scale subsistence farming that developed in the Invergowrie and Saumarez Ponds area. Numerous small farms were developed in the area and consequently a number of communities developed. 'Deeping Grove' Station was a farm established by Thomas Frazier, a resident of Deeping St James in Lincolnshire. In about 1856 he bought a farm of 157 acres at Saumarez Ponds.
