The Global Scale of English Learning Objectives for Professional English and the Common European Framework of Reference

The Global Scale of English (GSE) is a standardized, granular scale from 10 to 90 which measures Englishlanguageproficiency.TheGSELearningObjectivesforProfessionalEnglisharealignedwiththeCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReference(CEFR).UnliketheCEFR,whichdescribesproficiencyintermsofbroadlevels,theGlobalScaleofEnglishidentifieswhatalearnercandoateachpointonamoregranularscale—andwithinaCEFRlevel.Thescaleisdesignedtomotivatelearnersbydemonstratingincrementalprogressintheirlanguageability.TheGlobalScaleofEnglishformsthebackboneforPearsonEnglishcoursematerialandassessment.

CEFR and the Global Scale of English both comprise a number of Can Do statements, or “learning objectives,”foreachofthefourlanguageskills,describingwhatlearnersshouldbeabletodoatdifferentlevelsofproficiency.Thelearningobjectivesarewrittentoreflectwhatastudent‘CanDo’withlanguagewithoutregardtothecontextinwhichalanguageskillmaysurface.TheGSELearningObjectiveshavebeenalignedtotheCEFR,buttheCEFRwasnotaimedatlearnersofbusinessEnglish,hencetheneedtodevelopnewdescriptorsthatfocusonbusinessEnglishskills;asaresult,manyadditionalstatementswerecreated,ratedfordifficulty,andcalibratedtothescale.

ThisdocumentprovidesanoverviewofthelearningobjectivesintheneweditionofMarketLeaderandnewmaterialsinthecourse.Asthelearningobjectivesfocusspecificallyonlanguageskills,somelearningobjectiveswillberepeatedmultipletimes,toreflectthefactthatlanguageskillsarebuiltthroughpracticeinmultiplecontexts.

Inorderforalearnertosuccessfullylearnandinternalizeaskill(withthegoalofachievingmasteryinthesecondorforeignlanguage),itisimportanttoencountertheskillinavarietyofcontexts.ThecontentofMarketLeader3rdEditionExtraisdesignedtoprovidemultipletouchpointsfromwhichalearnercanexplorethepossibilitiesofuseofanygivenlanguageskill.Fromconversationsintheworkplace,tonegotiationandpresentationskills,learnersaregivenavarietyofopportunitiestoimprovetheiragilityandfluencywiththevariousskills.
