Distinct security levels within separate windows T he Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) and SecureWare have launched a commercial product to allow users to run Unix, MS DOS and MS Windows 3.1 applications "Unix, MS DOS and MS Windows 3.1 applications at distinct security levels" at distinct security levels within separate windows on a single desktop. The product, known as SCO CMW (Compartmented Mode Workstation) 3.0, allows organizations to use office automation products such as wordprocessors, spreadsheet packages and database applications in one window while simultaneously running secure applications in other windows. The Multi-Level Secure (MLS) operating system offers organizations and businesses with critical security environments, such as military, diplomatic and intelligence an MLS operating system, MLS network and MLS graphical user interface. The product is available both in single-user desktop and multi-user server versions, and is currently under evaluation for certification to E3/F-B 1 functionality at the E3 assurance level with the UK's ITSEC. Available at no cost in 'sentry' mode, this version has full detection capabilities to allow users to determine if their system has been subjected to viral attack. Repair capabilities are available in the full suite which costs £375 for the single-user version. Because this uses generic detection, users are not reliant on their suppliers to have the particular virus in their database, therefore, they do not need to subscribe to regular updates. The system is compatible with operating environments which execute DOS programs from v3.30 and higher.
