Our Mission: The mission of Sudlersville Elementary School is to educate and enlighten each of our students through an engaging curriculum and high expectations (for behavior and achievement) by dedicated teachers and staff with support of parents and the extended community.

Financial Literacy at Sudlersville Elementary SchoolBy:  Michele Hampton, Terri Gloyd, and Elaine Butler

Sudlersville Elementary School will be the first school in the county to pilot a financial literacy day on April 9, 2013 for grades K-4.  We are referring to this day as JA in a Day.  We are partnering with Junior Achievement of Central Maryland, QAC Chamber of Commerce, Bob Sullivan Financial, Queenstown Bank, Chick Fila, Peoples Bank, PNC Bank, SES PTA, Chesapeake College, QACHS, and Judy Center to kick-off financial literacy in Queen Anne’s County.  During this most eventful day, business/community volunteers will teach five lessons to the students all about finances and being responsible with money.  We will also have an evening resource fair for parents and students to attend.  At 5:00 PM, Chick Fila will provide dinner for all in attendance before the event.  At 6:30 PM, we will have our regularly scheduled PTA meeting.  Look for an invitation as the date approaches.  Mrs. Elaine Butler, parent coordinator, will be seeking parent input during the March 12th  PTA meeting.Additionally, we are hosting two assemblies for Teaching Children to Save Day on April 23, 2013.  This is sponsored by the American Bankers’ Association.  Presenters from Queenstown Bank will be here to teach children to save during a 45 minute assembly.

Shelby Walton, kindergarten student in Mrs. Munson's class, received the Author of the Week award.  Shelby wrote a Valentine's book about all of her friends in kindergarten.  Keep up the good writing!!!!

Amy Cope wins the Energizer Bunny Award at the February Board of Education meeting.

Students in pre-k thru 1st grades enjoyed State Park Ranger, Jessica Conley, as she shared information about Maryland's native audience.  All of the SES Eagles were captivated by the interesting information, as well as. the opportunity to see live animals native to Maryland.

March already!  Mrs. Chance's class is still in Africa learning about the animals, the people, and the culture.  Mrs. Dean's class has been busy learning about construction sites, tools, and building things.  Her class has been learning how to compare length, weight, and the capacity of various objects.  This month, her class will be starting Theme 7: In the City, In the Country.  They will be learning the differences between the city and the country.  Please continue to work on identifying numbers, letters, shapes, and colors at home.  We thank you for your continued support! The Pre - K Team

  By this time of the year, students are excited about reading!  They are finding sight words in books and in environmental print and are understanding how "word families work.Continue to work with sightwords with your child and encourage him/her to find those words when reading.Remember to record the books you have read on your child’sreading log for the third marking period.  Mrs. Embert will soon be sending information about the Read Across Maryland program and the Shore Birds reading incentive is ongoing.  Your child's participation in theseprograms is important.  If you need additional books to read to your child, please contact your child's teacher and books will be sent home.  A big thank you to the P.T.A. for giving a book to each child in the school through the S.U.R.F. program!   The Kindergarten Team

Grade 1 News March is here already? Wow, this 

year is moving quickly! Happy St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th! 

A special thank you to our guest story teller who came around to all the classes to read stories related to Black History Month at the end of February. And, a special thank you to Mrs. Patterson for speaking to the second grade about her dairy farm and milk production which tied in nicely with our economics unit. 

Remember to check your child’s homework folder each night for assignments and important information. Please have your child complete his/her homework and return promptly. As always, keep reading and returning those reading logs! 

Count on us to continue working super hard this month. Our Literacy Block time seems to be having a positive impact on our students’ reading abilities. We are very proud of their progress! In math we are working on regrouping. In science we will be learning about Earth and Space. The students just completed their first animal research reports. They are hanging in the hall and look super. Everyone did a fantastic job! We will continue to work on improving writing and building language skills as the year progresses. 

Have a wonderful March! We are looking forward to spring and the warm weather it brings!

Thank you to all the parents who came out for our 1st grade showcase night.  We really enjoyed sharing our class books with you and we hope you are enjoying them at home. If you did not order one and would like to, please see your child's teacher and we will give you the information.   We are continuing to work hard.  In math we have started working with tens and ones and comparing numbers to see which is greater or less.  In science we are experimenting with different kinds of matter.  Ask your child to identify solids, liquids and gases they find around the house.  In social studies we are reading about different cultures and discussing how they are the same or different from ours.  Please continue to work on writing complete sentences with capital letters and punctuation.  The reading logs are great practice for this.  Make sure you are reading every night!   Thank you for your continued support. First Grade Team

MARVELOUS MARCH Wow! We are now embarking on the most important part of the year- state testing month! The students will be completing the Reading M.S.A on March 6th and 7th and the Math M.S.A on March 12th and 13th, 2013.  Please make every effort for your child to be in school unless he or she is ill. It is imperative that students work hard, concentrate and take the tests very seriously. Breakfast will still be served in the morning so please remind your child to eat so that their brain may be alert and “fueled up!” Also, please make sure your child gets to bed early each night so that they will be rested and ready for testing. The testing is very rigorous and we are expecting all students to try their best and perform well. Please talk to them about the importance of the assessment.

We are celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. March is a great month to read classic books and enjoy reading as a family.  Come on in and share one of your favorites with our classes.MSA testing is right around the corner. Help your child do his/her best by making sure they get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast.  For the week of March 4th there will be no 4th grade homework due to testing.Did someone say fractions??? We will be living in the world of fractions for the next few months. Parents you are 1/3 of our "whole" team. Does your child "half" your undivided attention?Thanks for all you do!! 

 We are currently concluding a topic in Division and need your help! We need for students to know their multiplication facts by heart so that they can more easily learn higher order math concepts. Our next topic will be “Fractions!” Thank you to the parents that sign the reading log for the required four nights a week. Weekly math and reading homework is essential to reinforce the skills taught during the school day.   Please feel free to contact us at school with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your continued support~ wishing you a “marvelous, magical March.”

Please volunteer to spend some time with our S.E.S students on Monday, April 22. That’s Earth Day!   We have lots of fun exploring environmental science, and we keep students in groups of about 20.  Volunteers are paired with teachers, environmental experts, and other volunteers so there are always 2-3 adults with each group of students.     Our planning meeting is set for 3 pm on Wednesday,  March 13, in Mrs. Leventhal’s classroom.  Please join us.  Everyone is welcome!If you cannot attend the planning meeting, but you would like to help on Monday, April 22, please email mary.leventhal@qacps.org or contact Mrs. Elaine Butler, our S.E.S. Parent Coordinator by telephone (410-438-3164) or email elaine.butler@qacps.org.  We need volunteers to help with the recycled art exhibit, serving as hosts and hostesses to greet our environmental experts, and supporting classroom activities.   We run workshops from 8:30 am - 2 pm on such topics as recycling, energy, life science, Chesapeake Bay animals, and the water cycle/pollution.

   Declutter Your Medicine Chest March is poison prevention month.  Are the contents in your medicine cabinet safe and up to date?  A lot can accumulate in our medicine cabinets.  Take some time to update yours.  First check the contents and throw away:•any medicine that has expired or is more than 2 years old•any medicine that has changed color, consistency, or smells funny•tablets that are crumbly•ointments that have separated or discolored•leftover eye drops•sunscreen that is older than 3 years•band aids that are discolored Medicines should be kept on a high shelf away from heat, moisture, and little hands.When restocking you may want to purchase the following:•Acetaminophen (Tylenol) ~ check the strength for proper dosage•Ibuprofen ~ check the strength for proper dosage•Antihistamine (Benadryl) ~ to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms•Cough syrup: Guaifenesin loosens mucous to cough up.     Dextromethorphan suppresses a       cough.     Consult your doctor before       giving cough syrup.•Saline nose drops non medicated•Antibiotic ointment•Calendula cream•Cough drop or throat lozenge•Petroleum jelly•Calibrated medicine cup or spoon•Cotton swabs like Q tips•Digital thermometer with alcohol to clean•Hydrogen peroxide•Adhesive bandages in various sizes and tape•Tweezers to remove ticks and splinters•Disposable gloves

individually and in small groups.

In case your child swallows medicine accidentally:1st If your child is unconscious call 911.2nd If your child is not in distress call Maryland Poison Center @ 1-800-222-1222.  They are available 24 hours a day and will tell you what to do.P.S.  Never give children under the age of 19 , Aspirin when treating symptoms of colds, flu, etc… due to it’s possible connection with Reye’s Syndrome unless directed to do so by your doctor.  Always check with your doctor before giving any medicine containing salicylates.

COMMON CORE UPDATE: Scores are in from our Benchmark assessments and we are showing growth in our Common Core Math skills!  Your support and practice at home really helps students improve with math.  Thank you!STANDARDS OF MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE #6- Attend to precisionThis standard asks students to be precise and exact with their math solutions and communications.  Vocabulary needs to be used correctly to explain mathematical processes and thinking.  Numbers and measurements must be accurate and exact.  This practice is like the old carpenter’s saying of “Measure twice, cut once” meaning that being exact and precise is important so materials aren’t wasted.   CONTENT: GeometryThe math content of geometry asks students to analyze, compare, create and describe shapes in the world around them.  In early grades, students look for squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders and spheres in their environment.  They also compose (or make) designs and shapes using basic geometric shapes.  By grades 1 and 2, students are asked to give reasons based on attributes for grouping shapes together.  They look at the characteristics that make squares different and similar to rectangles.  They begin to partition basic shapes to share them equally.  By grades 3 and 4, students are asked to find areas of shapes by tiling or finding the number of squares that will fit inside the shape.  They also need to connect their multiplication skills to this process.  Grade 4 students also

How can parents help children to be good readers?

1.  Set expectations for your children - Let them know they are expected to achieve and help them develop reading skills. 

2.  Make books available - Make learning materials such as library books, newspapers, pencils and crayons available at home. 

3.  Read to your children - Read with them every day.  Listen to them read aloud.  Don't stop reading to them once they have learned to read. 

4.  Talk to your children about what you read - Talking about this helps your child to develop vocabulary and critical thinking skills. 

5.  Show that reading is important - Read in front of your children and encourage them to read too. 

We had 156 students receive a reading award for Quarter 2.  We have 343 students at SES.  We need to do better!  I can't stress enough how important it is for children to read at home.   To meet their reading goal we are asking them to read 20 minutes - 4 nights per week and write about what they have read.   Please help and encourage your child to meet this goal.   It will definitely make a difference in their reading success.

The Judy Center Partnership News

The Queen Anne’s County Migrant Program joins the Queen Anne’s Judy Center in preparing young children for school readiness. Through this partnership monthly workshops are being offered to promote literacy. Research shows that when children enter school ready to learn they are more likely to be successful throughout their school years.  The workshops are designed to empower families to support children’s literacy at home.  Families and educators work together to build an understanding of the importance of literacy and how they can better prepare their children for school success. For more information contact us at the Judy Center (410) 438-3887 ext. 272

Relay for LifeThe Relay for Life team would like to thank everyone for supporting our "SES has Heart" fundraiser. We raised over $800.00.  We would like to thank Margot Massie and Heather Sherwood for all of their help. 

GuidancePre-K K registration dates have been set for April 25, 26, 2013. If a child turns four before 9/1/2013, they are eligible for Pre-K.  If they turn five before 9/1/2013, they are eligible for Kindergarten.  Please call today to make your appointment for registration for school year 2013-2014.

SES Receives Grant for Family Involvement and Earth Day

promote family involvement with Earth Day.  Sudlersville Elementary School received a check for $500  from the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals.  The school will be using these funds to 

schedule assemblies and presentations from local 

environmental organizations, to conduct day-long workshops at each grade level, and purchase materials 

for activities and the art exhibit.  Earth Day is 

April 22nd.  Fun for all!!!

The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success.  Our SES library received over $1500.00 worth of new books to support the Common Core Curriculum.  Look for them on our shelves soon.  Thank you to all of the parents/volunteers  that worked the book fair.  I could not have done it without your help.  It was great to see some new faces as well.  The Buy One Get One is scheduled for the week of April 22nd. The Delmarva Shorebirds reading program ended on February 28, 2013.Thank you to the students that participated.  I will let you know the date of the game as soon as I find out.  I will most likely have extra tickets as well.  Hope to see a lot of you there. The Read Across Maryland reading log has been sent home to students in grades 1st-4th.  It is optional whether your child participates or not.  The reading they do for literacy block counts for this log as well.  Please encourage your child to participate.  A reading reward will be given out in April to those who return their reading log to me.  If you have any questions, please call me at 410-438-3164 X232.Thank you! Mrs. Embert
