HAWKTALK | PAGE 1 Winter 2016 Notes from The Principal’s Office Hello MTHS Community! We are at the midpoint in our school year—the first semester is wrapping up as I write this letter and on February 1st, we will be starting the second semes- ter. Some of your student’s classes may change and there may be a few sched- ule adjustments to student schedules as we bal- ance classes for the new semester. Along with the start of the new semester, there is much happening that we want to make sure everyone is aware of. End of Semester - First Semester ends on Janu- ary 28, 2016. Students will take final exams in all classes on January 26th and January 27th. Our schedule will adjust slightly so that students will take three final exams on each of these dates. Our start and end times (7:20 am to 1:50 pm) will re- main unchanged. I’d encourage you to talk to your student about the plans each of his/her teachers has for final exams. All classes are required to have some kind of a final assessment but that may look different in each of your student’s classes. Some classes may have a traditional test as a final exam while other classes may have students do a performance-based assessment or a final project. Again, it is really important that students start plan- ning in advance of final exams and that they know what the exam will be for each of their classes. On January 28th, the last day of the semester, we will be on a half day early release schedule with all classes dismissing at 10:15 am. Course Registration for 16-17 - For our current 9th – 11th grade students and for our incoming 9th graders, this is a very important process that we will begin in February. Students will get critical information about their credit requirements toward graduation, information about how to select the appropriate courses for the new school year, and support in completing the course registration forms that will finalize course selections for the coming school year. It is very crucial that students select the courses they are certain they want to take next school year. When we create our schedule for the coming school year, we base our scheduling deci- sions on what course students tell us they plan to take through the Registration process. I stress this every year—be very sure of the courses you select as these will be the courses we offer as a school. Every year, we have to work with students and parents who decide after courses are chosen, that they want to take something different. While we can help with some of these requests, we cannot ac- commodate everyone who decides to change his/ her mind. Take time to talk with your student about the courses he/she wants to take and make sure that the decision to take specific courses aligns with your student’s plans for high school graduation and the plans for post-high school—college, work, etc. As we start this process, we will make all informa- tion available online on our school website. If you have any questions during Registration, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s Counselor. End of Course Exam Make Up Testing- For those students who have not yet passed End of Course Exams in Algebra, Geometry or Biology, there will be a makeup testing opportunity for each subject on February 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. If you are unsure about whether or not your student needs to pass one or more of these tests, please contact Assis- tant Principal Peter Schurke. He can be reached at 425-431-7779 or by email, schurkep@edmonds. wednet.edu. I wanted to share a few thoughts on school safety. Every year, it seems like our school community is faced with an incident, some larger than others, that causes us to consider safety concerns and reassess our measures in place to ensure that ev- eryone in our school is safe. When we have an incident it understandably shakes the confidence and sense of safety that we all have. But let me reassure you—we are a safe school. We have over 1200 students who come here, and daily have a safe and positive experience. While need- ing to address issues of school safety and secu- rity proactively and when they arise, we also need to remember that these incidents are exceptions, not the rule. There is one significant thing we can all do to increase the level of safety and security in our school—say something. If you or your stu- dent knows of something going on, please make it a point to report your concern to the school or the district. Call the school. Call the Safe Schools Tipline – 425-431-7010. Send an email. Come to the office and let someone know what you are concerned about. If we all take this approach, we can significantly and positively affect the safety and security of our school community. LEVY & BOND MEASURESBALLOTS ARE DUE TUES. FEB. 9

The Edmonds School District is hold-ing an election Tuesday, February 9, 2016, to renew its Technology/Capital Levy. This document provides detailed information on this four-year replacement mea-sure.

The decision to put this mea-sure on the ballot was reviewed extensively and its continuation will help District students to keep pace with today’s learning needs.

“Continuing to provide our students with the instructional and learning tools that are contributing to our overall academic growth and success is essential,” said School Board President Diana White.

The Capital portion of the replacement levy will also address aging roofs and improvements to outdoor facilities.

“Our community is very supportive of our ongoing efforts to be diligent in the maintenance of our schools,” Board

member Gary Noble said.

Superintendent Nick Bros-soit added, “our supportive community keeps us on a replacement cycle to ensure classroom technol-ogy for student learning is available to all students.

“Local support of our pub-lic school system has been a key to our students’ aca-demic progress,” he added. “We encourage people to make an informed decision February 9, 2016.”

Methods for Checking Account Balances for Elementary and Secondary School Families:

• Skyward Family Access includes balance information:• Middle and high school students click on the “Food Service” tab• Elementary school students click on the “Portfolio” tab, then select “Meal Balance” • Students can ask the Food Service staff.• Call your school kitchen and ask.• Call the Food Service Office at (425) 431-7080 or (425) 431-7078.• Call your school Office Manager and ask.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your student’s day!

next year should plan on attending the MTHS Running Start Information Night on Tuesday, March 1st, 7pm in the MTHS theater. Students are expected to apply for the Running Start program and take the placement test by April 11th, the first school day after Spring Break. This will be discussed in greater detail at the information night on March 1st. Here is a summary of the application steps:

1. Attend MTHS Running Start information night (Tuesday, March 1st, 7pm, MTHS Theater)

2. Apply for the Running Start program directly through EdCC or other community college.

3. Take the community college’s placement test (or submit alternative placement information to the community college).

4. Submit proof of your successful Running Start placement to the MTHS counseling secretaries by April 11th.

5. Make an appointment with the counseling secretaries to meet with your MTHS counselor before the end of April to complete your Enrollment Verification Form.

6. Register for Running Start classes.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND ASSISTANCEWe want to remind parents and guardians that there is help available for your students as we reach the end of the first semester. If your student has encountered difficulty in their first semester courses, there is help available. Several resources that we recommend are:

• Meet with teachers after school to receive help or clarify confusion - teachers are usually available af-ter school, and students can always talk to or email teachers to set up a meeting time. An Activity bus is available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday de-parting at 4:30. Students must receive a bus pass from that teacher or the library in order to ride the activity bus home.

• Meet with teachers during the Advisory/Pass period. This period occurs between 2nd period and 3rd period on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fri-days. Students are required to check in with their assigned PASS teacher, and they should get a note one day prior to go see the teacher of their choice the next day.

• MTHS Study Hawks: The library is open after school, Monday-Friday from 2:00-4:00 for students to study, complete homework, and use computers for school assignments. The Activity bus is avail-able Monday-Wednesday at 4:30. Students must receive a bus pass from a library staff member in order to ride the activity bus home.

• Community Homework Center: Volunteer tutors are available to help students of all ages with homework. This is held at Terrace Park Elementary School in the library, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:00 pm.

• On-Line Help: One-to-one online tutors are avail-able 1-10 pm, seven days a week @ www.sno-isle.org Click on the Homework Help link under “Re-search” on the left. Check with library to see what other language help is available in. You will need a Sno-Isle library card to access this help (which is available online or at your local library).

• National Honor Society: There is a limited avail-ability of tutors (contact Julie Petterson - Coun-selor)

• Study Partners or Study Groups: Find a classmate or group from class to study with after school.

IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS• Financial Aid Night at MTHS on Tuesday, January

12, 2016, 6-8 PM in the Library Computer Lab. Financial Aid professionals will be available to answer your questions and help you complete the FAFSA and WASFA.

• Sophomore-Junior College Night @ Meadowdale High School on February 9th 2016, 7 PM.

• Running Start Information Night @ MTHS on Tues-day March 1st 2016, 7 PM, Theater.

2016-2017 RUNNING START INFORMATION10 and 11th graders and their parents who are interested in learning more about Running Start are encouraged to attend the Running Start Information meeting on Tues-day March 1st, 7pm in the Theater. Information will be given about the Running Start program and other dual enrollment opportunities. Student and families who are considering Running Start are encouraged to attend. Run-ning Start allows Juniors and Seniors to take college-level courses for both high school and college credit, and tuition is free while students are in high school. Students are responsible for the application fee (approximately $35), course fees (approximately $300 for full-time Running Start students), and textbooks (approximately $450 per quarter

for full-time running start students). There is course fee and text book fee waivers for low-income students. Check the EDCC Running Start website for updates and deadlines.

2015-2016 HIGH SCHOOL COURSE REGISTRATIONRegistration for next year is right around the corner. For the most up to date information, please be sure to check our MTHS Registration. The 2016-17 Registration Guide will be online in February, 2016.

Note: Students who plan to register for Running Start or other programs within the district should register for a full load of MTHS courses; counselors will adjust students’ schedules later in the year, once students are officially admitted into those programs.

Once all registration sheets are gathered, MTHS staff will work with Administration to build a master schedule for next year. Based on the number of students requesting each course, we will determine what classes will be offered and how many periods of the day the demand requires. If too few students request a certain course, that particular course will not be available. When we run the master schedule the computer builds students schedules based upon their requests.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTSGraduation requirements are viewable in Skyward Family Access.

• Seniors must have 19 credits after first semester to be on track for graduation.

• Juniors must have 13 credits after first semester to be on track for graduation.

If your student is behind in credits, it is important for them to meet with their counselor and develop a plan of action. If summer courses were taken outside of the Edmonds School District, it is their responsibility to see that we have a transcript indicating credits earned and that it is correctly reflected on your student’s current transcript.

In addition to earning 22.0 credits in specified areas, stu-dents must pass certain state tests in order to earn a high school diploma. Current seniors must pass state exams in Reading, Writing, and Math or successfully complete the requirement through an approved alternative. Visit the following state testing site for information: http://www.k12.wa.us/assessment/StateTesting/default.aspx

Please contact your student’s counselor if you have ques-tions about graduation requirements.

SENIORS- CLASS OF 2016- PARENTS AND GUARDIANSSenior Interview Reminders!

If your student has not yet had their Individual Senior Interview with their counselor, please encourage them to make that appointment. It is important so that they can

discuss their college/career plans, their graduation status and other important information.

FAFSA! (WAFSA!)Students and parents should fill out the FAFSA (Free Ap-plication for Federal Student Aid) ASAP. This federally funded student aid program becomes available yearly as of January 1st and funds are given out to those who qualify on a need basis. There is an additional state financial aid ap-plication called the WAFSA for students who don’t qualify for the FAFSA. We recommend all students fill out the FAFSA or WAFSA if they have any intention of attending a two or four year college next year, even if they don’t think they will qualify for need-based aid. Certain aid is available for students who are not financial need, but is given only to students who file the FAFSA or WAFSA (regardless of family income). In order to complete the FAFSA or WAFSA, you will need to obtain login information and gather your documents to complete the form. Beware of companies that promise to send college applications or fill out FAFSA forms for a fee- applying for Federal or State Financial Aid is free and is done by completing information through the official websites.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT!Financial Aid Night is Tuesday, January 12, 2016, 6-8 PM in the Library Computer Lab. Financial Aid professionals will be available to answer your questions and help you com-plete the FAFSA and WASFA. A list of items to bring with you is posted on the counseling center website.

NCAA ELIGIBILITY WITH THE NEW SAT FORMATIf a student-athlete takes the current SAT before March 2016 and then takes the redesigned SAT at a later date, the NCAA Eligibility Center will not combine section scores from the current and redesigned SAT when determining the student-athlete’s initial eligibility. The NCAA Eligibil-ity Center will only combine section scores from the same version of the test. Because the redesigned SAT varies in design and measures different academic concepts than the current SAT, a numerical score on the current test may not be equivalent to the same numerical score on the rede-signed test.

Check out this website for all the test dates: http://www.k12.wa.us/assessment/StateTesting/timelines-calendars.aspx

JUNIOR PLANNING PRESENTATIONS- COMING SOON!In April, counselors will be visiting junior classrooms for presentations about post-high school planning. These pre-sentations will include valuable information about colleges, technical schools, careers, graduation, and summer school.

Sophomore-Junior College Night at Meadowdale High School, 7PM, February 9th 2016.

Sophomores and juniors are invited to attend college night at Meadowdale High School on February 9th. They will have local college representatives there with take home in-formation, who will also be conducting break-out sessions about several topics including financial aid, application process, etc. It is a very worthwhile event!

FRESHMAN-CLASS OF ’19- PARENTS AND GUARDIANSCongratulations! You have almost made it through your first semester of high school. We hope you and your student are finding this transition to be a successful and enjoying experience. Please remember that the counsel-ing office is here to support you with any difficulties or obstacles you may encounter as you get further in your high school career. Freshman study table during lunch is mandatory for students who are currently failing two or more classes, and is an opportunity for students to work on assignments and make-up work for those classes during lunch. The time is supervised, attendance is taken daily and weekly reports are given as to student progress.

Getting involved! We always encourage our freshman to get involved in at least one club, sport, or activity outside of school so that they will have a stronger connection with the smaller community here. At the high school level parents and guardians can feel left out of the connection. It does become difficult as your student gets older and becomes more independent. Feel free to contact the Ac-tivities/Athletics office or your student’s PASS teacher for information on clubs/activities. Regularly, we hear parents and guardians ask how they can become more involved in their student’s school. Mountlake Terrace has a wonderful PTSA that meets the first Monday of every month in the MTHS Library, and is a great way for parents to connect and meet with other adults in the school. It will give you the opportunity to find out what’s going on and give input as to what you think might be helpful to our students and school.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM OUR REGISTRAR:Edmonds School District’s policy is that we must obtain an

acceptable proof of residency when enrolling a new student or changing the address of current students. It must be dated within the month that the address change is reported (exceptions are bi-monthly statements i.e. PUD, PSE, natu-ral gas, water).

Acceptable proofs include: PUD, water or gas bill, mort-gage, lease, or renter’s statement or insurance policy, closing paperwork from purchase of home, lease or renter’s agreement.

From the Attendance OfficeOne of the highest correlates for student success in school is attendance.

Attending school consistently and on-time is very important. Washington State has a compulsory attendance law which requires that children attend school and which describes the reasons that an absence from school can be ex-cused.The Mountlake Terrace High School Attendance policy can be found on the MTHS website and is also described in the Student Handbook, also on the MTHS website.

If you know in advance that your student will be leaving school early, please write a note in pen, dated, and signed. Please be specific in the date and time of the student’s departure. Instruct your student to bring the note to the Atten-dance Office either before school or during lunch. All notes must be turned in on the day of the early dismissal and prior to the student’s departure.

If you call the Attendance office for an early dismissal, please allow 20 to 30 minutes so we can expedite your student’s departure in a timely manner. If you come to pick up your student, you will be required to present your picture I.D. Thank you for your cooperation. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

BECCA LAW INFOStudents who attend school regularly achieve higher grades and are more

successful in school. Students with 7+ unexcused absences within a year may be referred to truancy court as part of the BECCA law. The school attendance policies can be found on our school website. If your child will be absent please communicate with school staff within two days of the absence by phone or with a written note. The number for the attendance office at Mountlake Terrace High School is 425-431-7781.

Withdrawing a student:

Please let the Registrar know as soon as you can that a student will be moving and relocating to another school. This ensures that textbooks are properly returned, any fees/fines are taken care of and they have taken their withdraw form to teachers for final grades.

FRC Robotics Kickoff: “STRONGHOLD!” The 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff was held at MTHS on January 9. The new game and playing field were unveiled to 1400 students from 41 schools. Working with Engineering Mentors, students

have six weeks to design, build, program and test their robots to meet the season’s challenge. In this year’s game, called “STRONGHOLD”, two Alliances of three robots each are on a quest to breach their opponents’ fortifications, weaken their tower with boulders, and capture the opposing tower. Robots score points by breaching opponents’ defenses and scoring boulders through goals in the opposing tower. During the final 20 seconds of the Quest, robots may surround and scale the opposing tower to capture it. It will be an extremely fun and exciting game for 2016! The first round competition will be held at Glacier Peak HS on March 12. All are welcome to attend!

UPDATE WINTER 2016

Library & Tech News

GET READY TO BATTLE!Battle of the Books participants are showing

themselves to be outstanding readers. One team member has already read all 15 com-petition titles, and two others have finished 13 of the books. Read on!

It’s not too late for students become Battlers. This year all of the high schools in the District will pit their teams against one another in

the Battle of the Books in May. Would-be contestants should listen for announcements on HBN and in their English classes for more information on upcoming activities for individuals and teams. A list of competition titles can be found on the Library page of the MTHS website.

CAN YOU SAY “GOOGLE DOCS”?Thanks to funding provided by the last Technology Levy, over 300

new Chromebooks were added to MTHS classrooms during the month of Decem-ber. Many of the Chromebooks replaced aging laptops that had slowed to a digital crawl. Others went to classrooms that had lacked computing power in the past. The Chromebooks provide speedy internet connections for classroom research. E-mail accounts and document production

tools such as Google Docs and Google Slides are made available through individual Google Drive accounts. Cloud storage of student files and sharing features allow easy access to assignments both at school and at home and make it possible for multiple users to work on collaborative projects in real time. Given the improved access to technology, some teachers have been able to begin utilizing Google Classroom. This management tools allows student work to be assigned and submitted electronically. The dog can’t eat this homework.

NEED HELP WITH RESEARCH PROJECTS?Links to useful databases and websites are

as close as the Library page on the MTH website. Look for the list of “Online Data-bases for Students” and links to “Ms. Meier’s webpage” and the MTH Library catalog.

Access to the online databases is provided by the District. Because these are paid sub-

scription sites, usernames and passwords can’t be posted on-line. Just check with Ms. Meier in the Library or with classroom teachers to obtain the necessary log-in information.

Julie Hill, RN At MTHS Mondays

& Wednesdays

425-431-1066 [email protected]

Hello all! I’d like to introduce myself. I am Julie Hill and I am your school nurse. This is my 18th year in the district and at MTHS. Here in the Edmonds School District the nurses are cer-tificated, just like the teachers. We do not staff the health room but do train the people who do to deliver care safely and legally. My job and my goal as your school nurse is to “manage” the health needs of the students so that a health condition has no or minimal impact on academic progress. I am here at MTHS every Monday and Wednesday but am in district Monday-Friday and am glad to talk any day. Please feel free to contact me at 425-431-1066 or [email protected] any time!

We want you to know that we follow carefully developed practices and procedures to protect your student and to provide emergency care when a student becomes ill or injured at school. Below is important information to help keep your student safe and healthy.

• Please alert me about any health condition or concerns your student may have! Little things like aller-gies may not appear relevant to communicate with us but in reality, allergies can contribute to difficulty learning due to symptoms and sometimes treatment (such as Benadryl, which is sedating). Asthma, aller-gies, chronic health conditions, mental health concerns, and any medications should be communicated so that I can be aware of any potential needs.• Health information about your student is communicated with teachers through Skyward and this infor-mation is viewable by parents and students. Please go Skyward to view the information, if any, written there and contact me with any update or new health information.• Develop a plan for picking up your student promptly in the event s/he becomes ill or injured at school. We feel terrible when sick students are forced to stay at school when we can’t contact parents/guardians.• Keep your student at home if s/he has symptoms of a beginning illness. To determine if your student is able to attend school, ask the questions: “Is my child able to participate fully in classroom activities?” “Is my child free from a communicable disease that could be transmitted to others?” The issue in high school is that students are afraid of falling behind so stay at school or come to school even when sick. If they are actively able to communicate an illness due to active coughing, sneezing, vomiting, etc, they should not come or stay. When they have a low grade illness their alertness level and ability to retain information will be compromised. • We continue to emphasize consistent school attendance because learning is enhanced when students are able to attend school every day. Compulsory school attendance is not only important for learning; it is required by law (Becca law). Excused absences that become excessive, even if due to illness, may re-quire a doctor’s note to excuse. This will protect your student if referred due to Becca. It is a good practice to get a note from the doctor any time your child has an appointment and then send the note to school. Occasionally, I may ask that you sign a release of information for your child’s health care provider in order to problem solve and to develop a plan to minimize disruption to your student’s education.• The Edmond’s School District does not have a Health Room Nurse model. Certificated RN’s are in the building one day/week in elementary buildings but at the high school we are here two days/week. We train the office staff to provide health care to students in a safe and legal way so that they can care for students with minor illnesses and injuries, follow Individual Health Plans and Emergency Care Plans for students with more complex health needs, and to recognize when they need more assistance (e.g. con-tact 911 for emergencies, contact a nurse for consultation, etc.).• All school staff are trained annually in Life-Threatening Conditions such as Asthma, Severe Allergies/EpiPen use, Diabetes, and Seizures, and how to respond to other emergencies.• The Health Services Department has a website! Here you can find out what school nurses do, our schedules, download frequently needed health forms and lots of other health information. www.edmonds.wednet.edu> Bottom right: Site Shortcuts>Student Wellness>Health> our website!• I have a website: Go to MTHS website>Counseling and Career> Julie Hill Nurse. I have an article there about organizational tips that help parents and students get their way through high school.• MEDICATION: Please see below for the Medication Policy for students at MTHS.• The Student Information Form and Field Trip Forms are very important for emergency information, which would include health concerns, medication, and emergency contact or caregivers, (name, home phone and work phone numbers). This can be my only current source of health information on your child.• It is really important to me that all students have health insurance. If your student does not, please contact me and I can e mail the link or mail you paperwork.•

We want your student to stay well and we welcome your suggestions for keeping him or her safe and well at school. I invite you to contact me with ideas for promoting your student’s well-being, and anticipate with you a successful school year.

Sincerely, Julie

STAFF CULINARY CORNERFETTUCCINE ALFREDOFROM TANYA BENVENUTI, COUNSELORThe story behind the recipe…

Tanya’s dad is first generation Italian-American and this is their family recipe. Enjoy!

• Saute 5-6 cloves of chopped up garlic in 1 cube of butter.

• Add 1 pint of heavy whipping cream and let it heat up for a bit and then slowly add in 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and cook over low heat until cheese is melted. Do not let it come to a boil.

• Boil one box of fettuccine noodles in heavily salted water. Drain water (do not rinse!)

• Add sauce.

• You can add in shrimp, chicken, or crab for a variation, or add in a little cayenne pepper if you want it to have some kick!

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUPFROM TOBEY GLOSS, HEALTH OCCUPATIONS INSTRUCTOR

The story behind the recipe…

“We celebrate Hanukkah, and serve this as part of our Hanukkah dinner, but it can be cooked for any special dinner.”

Ingredients:

• 1 large butternut squash (about 2 ½ pounds)

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 1 large onion

• 3 stalks of celery

• 2 medium apples (suggest Jona-gold, Melrose, or Spartan)

• 1 quart homemade chicken stock

• Salt, pepper, parsley, dill, and nutmeg

• Crème Fraîche

Instructions:

Peel and cut squash into 2 inch cubes, removing pulpy center. Quarter and core the apples. Peel and finely chop onions and celery.

Melt butter and sauté onions in large stock pot until the onions are barely translucent, stirring occasionally. Add celery and cook three minutes more. Add squash and enough stock to entirely cover vegetables.

Add salt, pepper, parsley, dill and nutmeg to taste. Cover pot and simmer until squash is fork tender, adding apples during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Puree soup in batches in a food processor, or in the stock pot with a Braun type mixer.

Add more chicken stock if thinner consistency is desired.

Serve in a heated bowl with a dollop of crème fraîche on the top. You can also substitute the crème fraîche for sour cream if you want.

Makes 6 servings

JOHNNY’S POTATOES (TWICE-BAKED POTATOES)FROM JOHN TRAXLER, SCIENCE INSTRUCTORThe story behind the recipe…

“When I was 5 years old my mom made these for the first time for a Thanksgiving Dinner – I loved them so much my family stopped calling them “Twice Baked” potatoes and to this day call them “Johnny’s Potatoes”. Being the middle child of 6 (3 boys, 3 girls) it al-ways meant a lot to me to have my very own potatoes. I am 50 this year and still see my family regularly (there are now 21 neices/nephews/grandkids), and we still get together at Thanksgiving – all of us!. It makes me smile to hear my nieces and nephews excitedly asking for Uncle Johnny’s potatoes.”

Ingredients:

• 12 medium russet potatoes

• 1 cup whole milk(or whipping cream if you want them seriously creamy)

• 1 stick butter

• 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or store bought shredded mix)

• 1 clove roasted garlic

Instructions:

Clean and wash the potatoes, poke w/a fork, and bake until soft throughout (about an hour at 375). I cut the top off a whole clove of garlic, drizzle a little olive oil on it, and bake it w/the potatoes - 1/2 hour.

Allow the potatoes to cool enough to handle, split the potatoes, and scoop them out into a large bowl, leaving behind about a ¼ inch of potato with the skin. Line up 20 halves on a baking sheet.

Mash the potatoes with the milk, butter and roasted garlic, the potatoes should still be warm enough to melt the butter.

When thoroughly mashed, scoop the potato mixture into the hollowed out halves, top each with a small amount of shred-ded cheddar (or a mix of your choosing, some even like to go all out and put some bacon bits as well). When ready to serve, heat in 375 oven for 15 min, until cheese is bubbling.

SHORTBREAD SQUARESFROM KAY VEST, MAIN OFFICE MANAGERThe story behind the recipe…

This is an old, family recipe. Tried and true!

Ingredients:

• 1lb butter

• 1 cup sugar

• 4 cups flour

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• 1 teaspoon almond

Instructions:

• Set oven Temp 350*

• Press dough into a pan

• Run a fork over top (add sprinkles if de-sired)

• Cook for 25-30 mins. – keep eye on it!

• When you take it out cut into squares right away (it’s less messy if you do)

Terrace BSUBlack Student Union – also known

as BSU – is a club where kids from all different backgrounds come together to talk about our future, past and present.

The goal of the club is to change the negative perceptions of African Ameri-cans and to be positive role models in our community. Some of the ways we do that is by volunteering at our local elementary schools and tutoring kids

who need help.

In addition we have gone to Food Life Line where we packaged loads of food to give to local food banks. Also we make trips to downtown Seattle where we handout clothes, toiletries and food to the homeless in need.

We are a student-run group and make it our mission to show that stereotypes

are not always true. Anybody is wel-come to join, anybody can help us on our mission to create a positive percep-tion of African Americans and other students of color in our community.

MTHS staff member Michael Boxley is the BSU adviser

BUSINESS & MARKETINGStudents

in the Busi-ness and Market-ing Department have been busy this semester. Along with a number of other activities and happenings, we would like to call special attention to the following Business students for their exceptional accomplishments. They have all earned Edmonds Community College credit by passing one or two Microsoft Office Specialist tests in their Microsoft IT Academy class 1st semes-ter.

Kobey Coffey 10 credits

Hannah Bressler 04 credits

Cole Goodnight 04 credits

Baily Schroeder 04 credits

Michael Wollan 04 credits

Sally Benedict 04 credits

Rachel Clark 04 credits

McKenzie Davis 04 credits

Annika Prom 09 credits

Sierra Ridge 09 credits

The cost for these 56 credits would

well over $4000 if the students had to pay the tuition alone for them. Books, fees, and such would add onto that figure significantly.

This is an incredible opportunity for our students and we are anticipating many more credits will be earned during first semester finals and during second se-mester. Students also register in class for at EDCC for these credits which is also offered free of charge.

If you have any questions about the Tech Prep program in the Business/Marketing Department, please email Beth Gilbraith [email protected].

*FIRST YEAR MEMBERS!

KEY CLUB NEWSS.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles)

has started. We are collecting used glasses to be sent to Mercy Medical Ships who in turn provide vision health care for Third World Countries. Key Club, along with the local Kiwanis Club will collect, repair, clean and package the used glasses. We will accept them until February 17th. Drop them off at the school office for Key Club.

Our annual Toiletry Drive will be held in the month of March. Clean out those cupboards to collect un-used new personal items, toiletries, soaps, feminine items, shaving, baby and hair care. It’s a great idea to gather hotel sized items while on

vacation. There will be a box in the main office during the month of March to drop off your toilet-ries.

Key Club kids are a strong force within the MTHS community. During December we collected, wrapped and delivered Christ-mas to families in our commu-nity, and for Holly House. During the fall we tied and delivered 2o fleece blankets to the Edmonds Cancer Care Alliance Clinic, decorated at Edmonds Swedish Hospital, collected change for UNICEF, and assisted various other community groups. Thanks for all of the support you give to the Key Club.
