EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK
“I got out of bed and learnt from my landlady’s
husband that my friend Harry Lee had brought
a bucket of coal. Mr Chapman said, ‘Your friend
must be very strong…’ The bucket was full and
he had come through the snow on foot because
he couldn’t very well carry the bucket on a
bicycle.”
Yong Pung How, Chief Justice
(1990-2006)
“My communications with Mr Lee were short
and focused…. In 1988 … Mr Lee called me one
day to the Istana. He asked if I could bring
investments to Woodlands, which was an ulu
place at the time. I countered, ‘Can you put an
MRT station there?’ I walked out of the room;
he picked up the phone.”
Philip Yeo, Chairman of EDB
(1986-2001)
“There was a funny incident once when he
invited me to lunch…. He was peeling his pomelo
while talking about politics at the same time. He
said, ‘Now you share with me.’ I thought he
wanted to hear my views … and was about to
talk when he offered me half his pomelo…”
Lim Chin Beng, Deputy Chairman
Singapore Airlines (1982-96)
About the Book
Up Close with Lee Kuan Yew gathers some of the vivid memories of 37 people
who have worked or interacted closely with Lee Kuan Yew in some way or
other, from when he was at Raffles College in 1941 right up to his demise in
2015. Among these are his 13 Principal Private Secretaries and Special
Assistants, and Mdm Yeong Yoon Ying, his Press Secretary of over 20 years.
The others include former President S.R. Nathan, Puan Noor Aishah who is the
widow of President Yusof Ishak, former Chief Justice Yong Pung How, and
friends such as Robert Kuok from his Raffles College days. This book captures
an unvarnished look at what it was like to interact with the serious and no
nonsense Mr Lee, both at work and outside of work.
“He questioned me in a rather harsh tone and said I was very bold to be
complaining about my chairman whom he knew was well respected. He told
me in a raised voice that I could lose my job for what I had done. …I replied
that having written to him, I was prepared for the consequences. He glared
at me. I didn’t know what to expect next. I expected the worst. Then, he
broke into laughter.’”
Peter Seah, Chairman, DBS Bank

Hailed as the “cake discovery of the century” back in the 1940s when it was first introduced to home
bakers, the chiffon cake remains a firm favourite in the world over seven decades on. It’s no wonder,
as chiffon cakes are light, fluffy and moist — everything that is desirable in a cake — and low in sugar
and butter-free too!
While chiffon cakes are typically baked round and tall using tube pans, creative bakers Susanne Ng
and Tan Phay Shing found that they could break the mould and inject a dose of fun and lots of
creativity into making chiffon. From patterned cakes, tiered cakes and cakes with hidden designs, to
shaped cakes, cake pops and cupcakes, all decorated without the need for cream or fondant, you’ll
be amazed at what you can create using chiffon cakes. And results taste as good as they look! Get
creative and rediscover the cake of the century with Creative Baking: Chiffon Cakes today!
About the Authors
Susanne Ng holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and worked in biomedical research before she
chose to stay home to spend time with her three children. Through friends, she picked up an interest
in making chiffon cakes and found her second spring. The idea of applying patterns to chiffon cakes
came to her one day when she was bored and she created the Sakura Matcha cake, followed by
Christmas cake pops. There was no stopping her from then on. Susanne now specialises in making
patterned chiffon cakes and gets many enquiries for her fabulous creations through the blog Loving
Creations 4 U which she shares with Phay Shing.
Tan Phay Shing holds a postgraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in engineering
research before she chose to stay at home to spend time with her children. Her baking journey
started with making cute steamed buns and she fell in love with patterned chiffon cakes when she
first saw Susanne’s amazing creations. In addition to chiffon cakes, Phay Shing also specialises in
making cute macarons and cookies

Synopsis of Book Through the 90‐odd paintings in this book, Teng Jee Hum hopes to share his feelings about what it has been like to be a Singaporean in the last 50 years or so. Many of the images are the artist’s take on the first Prime Minister of Singapore and his policies in governing Singapore. Critiques of Teng’s work are included in this book. They are written by:
SENG YU JIN, Senior Curator at The National Gallery; JASON WEE, artist and a writer, who co‐curated the acclaimed Beyond LKY exhibition in
2010; MEI HUANG, China‐born curator, writer and art critic.
There is also a Q&A section where the artist explains more about his fascination with the key subject of his art. About the Artist Teng Jee Hum grew up in Singapore in the 50s and 60s, deeply influenced by the towering figure of Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
Coming from a humble background, with his father a seaman who was home barely 2 weeks a year, Teng succeeded in the transformed socio‐economic and political environment of Singapore, working in finance and banking, investing and managing others’ wealth.
In his artist statement, Teng said: “Looking back now on the evolving collection, it is a searching for identity, discovering the root influences of how I come to be this way. In doing so, I

What dark secrets lurk in Singapore’s basement?
Are Singaporeans a weak people?
Do Singaporeans really deserve their wages?
Who is more out of touch – the people or their leaders?
Why did founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew change his mind about writing his memoirs?
Han Fook Kwang, the former editor of The Straits Times, provides provocative answers to these questions and more, in this collection of 40 commentaries.
It draws from some of his best works in Singapore’s main newspaper in which he writes regularly since stepping down as its editor in 2012.
Among them are pieces on his reading of the watershed 2011 General Election and the equally surprising GE in 2015, new challenges facing the economy, what ails the medical profession and the public transport system, and the importance of a vibrant civic society.
The book also features a selection of his writings on Lee, whom he worked closely with on three books, including the bestselling Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going and One Man’s View Of The World.
