The Thinker statue sits in front of Grawemeyer Hall and is the first large-scale bronze cast of The Thinker and claims priority as the most original from 1903. The city decided to put The Thinker at UofL and it has sat in front of Grawemeyer Hall since 1949. To learn more about the UofL icon visit louisville.edu/about/thinker.

The CARDS Cheer is one of the first things new students and their families learn when they come on campus. A trademark at athletic games and campus events, the cheer also is the universal (and loudest) way to show your UofL pride.

Give Me An “L”

To show our school pride and connect with the Cardinal family worldwide, we’ve got one move: Flashing an “L.” You’ll do this when you pose for photos, when a UofL team is successful, or really any time the moment grabs you. Using your right hand, stick out your thumb to the side while raising your index and middle fingers and bending the ring and pinky. That’s it, now you’re part of the tradition. Try it!

it’s A barnburner

By the time your student graduates, some of their fondest UofL memories will have

Founded by two UofL students in 1969, the building has been a gracious host for everything from guest speakers to punk concerts.

White squirrels

A few albino (white) squirrels roam campus. When you spot one, it’s a sign of a good day. Or, well, at least you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something special for the day.

The Career Development Center offers comprehensive services and programs to help students clarify their academic and career goals, gain practical experience through practice interviews, internships and cooperative education experiences, and identify employment opportunities and options. Juggling academics and a personal life can be hectic. If you find your student is frustrated or confused and unsure of where to turn, the on-campus Counseling Center can help. UofL has professionally licensed psychologists and counselors to assist your student.

The Cultural Center is a hub for students of all backgrounds looking for a place

to connect. The center itself offers programming for events like cultural competencies workshops, career development lectures, diversity trainings, as well as advising student groups. No matter your student’s background, the staff at the center can point your student to various student groups that may interest them.

The office of First Year Initiatives (FYI) is comprised of a network of great people who are committed to making sure your student has a successful and fun first year at the University of Louisville from the moment Summer Orientation is over until Finals Week in the spring semester! Check louisville.edu/firstyear for details on all of the programs and services offered. A few of the programs you’ll want to get your student involved in include:

• Welcome Week is an essential experience for every new student and helps students make the transition to being a UofL student! Welcome Week 2016 is Aug. 17–21. There are a variety activities and signature programs for students happening during Welcome Week that you and your student won’t want to miss. Check louisville.edu/firstyear/events/welcome-week for the full schedule.

• Book-in-Common (BinC) is also a great way for incoming students to get involved before the semester starts. A community-wide reading for UofL’s entire campus, BinC brings together students, faculty, and staff who read and explore a common text which is incorporated into courses across disciplines. To enhance classroom learning, BinC partners with campus and local community members to host a year-long event series aimed at highlighting the themes and issues raised throughout the text.

Joining a fraternity or sorority is one of the best ways for your student to get involved,

to network and especially make new friends on campus. UofL offers a diverse list of over 33 Greek organizations and each has a positive impact on the campus and community.

The University of Louisville International Service Learning Program (ISLP) is an interdisciplinary program that allows your student to experience international travel and diverse cultures while earning three hours of course credit. UofL faculty members guide students in creating educational programs that address human and community needs. The semester culminates when our students travel to the host country and present their programs in local classrooms. ISLP offers five opportunities: Belize, Botswana, Croatia, the Philippines, or Trinidad and Tobago, and students with any major may apply.

UofL’s Intramural and Recreational Sports program offers more than 50 activities each year—including kickball, tennis, dodgeball, and flag football. If your student is interested they can form their own team to participate or join as a “free agent.” Something that is sure to make an immediate impact on the quality of life for your student is our new, 128,000 square-foot Student Recreation Center.

There are about 420 Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) on campus whose focuses include academics, athletics, social, political, ethnic, professional, religious and other topics. They all offer students a way to connect and have some fun!

We’re really a small city, offering spaces for our community to live, learn, work and play. Through our CardSafe programs and University Police we are constantly working to make your campus home even more secure. The University Police is responsible for law enforcement, crime prevention, emergency services and parking management for the University of Louisville. Services are provided on a 24-hour basis to students, faculty and staff, as well as visitors to the University of Louisville. University Police takes great pride in its advancing community policing efforts and works closely with the Louisville Metro Police Department.

• Campus safety escort Program. This is a free service offered to any member of the University from dusk to dawn, any day of the year. Call (502) 852-6111 to request an escort anywhere within campus boundaries and up to four blocks off campus.

• UofL Alerts RAVe Alert text Messaging and emergency notification system. This is one of UofL’s emergency communication modes. These text messaging alerts give you the most up-to-date emergency information. Students and families are strongly encouraged to sign up for UofL Alerts at louisville.edu/alerts.

• the “L” trail is a series of sidewalks on Belknap Campus which is clearly marked with signage and enhanced lighting. The “L” Trail is patrolled by police officers on a regular basis.

• CardGuard is a phone app where you can instantly dial 911 or Campus Police. The app is available through Google Play and Apple Store.

The University of Louisville Financial Aid office provides walk-in counseling Monday–Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and the Call Center (502) 852-5511 is also open during those times.

FAFsA information

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the application for federal grants, work-study, and loans as well as some state and institutional aid programs. File the FAFSA online at fafsa.gov. We recommend students file the FAFSA as soon as possible each year.

Award Notification & Aid disbursement

Award notifications are sent via email. First-year students will also receive a paper award letter in the mail. The award notification will direct students to their ULink account. On ULink, you can accept, reduce, or decline loan offers. Scholarships and grants are automatically listed on ULink as accepted.

Starting the week prior to the start of fall classes, funds will be disbursed. The Bursar’s Office will then post that aid

to your student’s account. Disbursed financial aid that exceeds a student’s balance is considered excess or residual funds. Eligible Student refunds will be based on a student’s preference. The preference will be handled through Bank Mobile and information will be available on the Bursar website.

The Bursar’s Office handles all Billing and Payment information. For information on tuition and fees visit the Bursar’s Office website at louisville.edu/finance/bursar. Your Account (listed under the section Tuition, Fees, and Payment Options) on ULink will list the student’s charges, disbursed financial aid, residual funds, and anticipated aid.

FeRPA

The University of Louisville is required by law to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law establishes guidelines to protect the privacy of student records and to provide students access to these records. This means that students have the right to keep their records private and that the university is prohibited from sharing a student’s FERPA-protected information with anyone without a written release.

This does not mean that information is not available to you as parents. Students may share information with parents by setting up a PIN on their student portal ULink, ULink.louisville.edu. Have your student share their PIN with you and then please provide the student ID number and PIN when you request information for your student. However, due to FERPA, even as the parent or legal guardian who has the students’ ID and PIN some offices may still require that the student is the direct person speaking in order to release information. At any point, students can change their ULink PIN and these steps do not guarantee that student information can be shared.

RAL

Resident Assistant Leader. Student leader who lives in the halls with your student. They enforce policies, mediate roommate conflicts, create events, and periodically check on your student.

CHA/CM/dA

Student staff who cover the front desks of our halls. They monitor who enters the buildings and are a great resource for any questions your student may have.

Hd/RLC

Graduate students or full-time staff who supervise the RALs and oversee the facilities of the building. They have office hours where your student can meet with them.

ssC/Corvus

Staff who clean the residence halls. The halls are cleaned six days a week including the community bathrooms. (If your student is in a suite or an apartment, they will be responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms and kitchens.)

How Can You Help Your student?

It can be frustrating when you know your student is dealing with a problem away from home. Below are some common issues and information you can use to help your student resolve them.

Problems with their roommateAt the beginning of the semester, your student’s RAL will sit with them and their roommate(s) to complete a “side by side agreement.”

• Encourage them to talk with their roommate;

• They can talk with their RAL who can mediate a conversation between roommates;

• A room change request can be submitted after mediation.

• If something is broken in their room or if there is another issue (water leaking, pests, mold, too hot): your student should start by filling out a “FIX IT” form located under the forms link on the housing website. Your student can ask the front desk staff for help in filling one out;

• If your student has reported the issue but it has not been resolved, they can talk to their HD/RLC who can follow up on the issue and be an advocate for your student;

• In the case of an emergency, such as a flood or fire, your student should go to their front desk immediately.

Your student will no longer be required to live on campus. A wide set of options are available to them: on campus, affiliated, and off campus. It is important to have a conversation early on about not signing a lease anywhere until your student and you are 100% ready to do so.

On-Campus Housing information will come out in late Fall and typically the application opens in early Spring. Start asking your student about whether they have received an email from us in early November as we don’t want any residents to miss out on living on campus.

Affiliated Housing is a popular option for many of our upper class students. These are private partners with the University who provide housing to students within walking distance to campus. They are typically 12 month contracts and are traditional landlord tenant leases. Your student will start hearing from our different partners in late Fall.

Off-Campus Unaffiliated Housing is also an option if you decide with your student that they should move completely off campus. The site offcampushousing.louisville.edu can be a good resource to look at student-friendly apartments and offers a message board for finding roommates and subleasing.

Was your student active in student government or other organizations in high school? RSA is a great way for your student to get involved early. Hall council elections happen in September. If your student isn’t ready to take that step, they can still participate in RSA meetings and volunteer for activities.

Resident Student Association (RSA)

Students who work 10 to 20 hours a week get higher grades, and Campus Housing has over 150 student employee and leader positions available. Many of our positions will have openings available in early to mid-Fall. These positions will be advertised by flyers in the halls and through our social media, so encourage your student to stay connected for the latest information.

How does My student Get Mail?

To receive mail and packages, residents living in the following halls must have a campus post office box.

• Louisville Hall• Miller Hall• Threlkeld Hall• Unitas Tower

Your student can sign up for a post office box during Orientation. The cost of a mailbox is $5.00. Your student may also visit the post office after move-in to get a box. For package delivery, the postal service will receive the package and place notification in the student’s P.O. Box letting him/her know there is a package to be picked up.

Residents in the following halls will find mailboxes in the buildings where they live and may receive packages there as well.

Cancellation

• If your student has completed an application and is no longer attending UofL, have them fill out the Cancellation Request Form immediately to minimize cancellation fees.

• If they are attending UofL but no longer intend to live on campus, they will need to fill out the First Year Exemption Request Form and the Cancellation Request Form.

MyResNet

We have partnered with Apogee to provide wireless internet service and support to the residence halls. Residents have a 20mbps connection and the ability to connect up to five devices. If you decide with your student that they should have a faster speed or the ability to connect additional devices, you can upgrade the service for $89 a semester. We would recommend that your student try out the base service first, as the majority of residents find that it meets their needs.

students who meet one of the following conditions may request an exemption from the First Year Live-on policy online:

• Residing with a custodial parent or guardian

Students with other extenuating circumstances may also request an exemption. Exemption decisions will be sent within three weeks to the email address the student listed on the exemption request.

Each Fall and Spring semester, all students in university housing are automatically assigned a meal plan, which includes a number of meal swipes and a declining balance of flex points. Visit www.louisville.edu/dining to view the meal plans specific to your student’s residence and options to upgrade or customize. The meal plan is accepted at all campus dining venues. Your student will use their Cardinal Card to make meal plan purchases and it becomes active on Move-In Day.
