STORIES OF DISCOVERY

MAKING THE CLASSROOM A LEVEL PLAYING FIELDOur education experts developed new approaches to early childhood education in underprivileged communities in Chile and Australia. Researchers advised Chilean government education policy, and, in Australia, a teacher mentoring program showed significant advances in child learning.

EXPLORING MRI AT A DEEPER LEVELThere are 14 million new cancer cases world-wide each year. New MRI diagnostic tools could perform ‘virtual biopsies’, enabling non-invasive early detection and treatment of primary tumours – and save lives.

CANCER PATIENTS’ OPTIONS IMPROVE Better tolerated drugs are improving the quality of life and increasing survival rates of patients with incurable forms of prostate and kidney cancer.

BENEFITS FLOW FROM WATER RESEARCHProtecting communities from floods and preventing drinking water contamination are complex and costly global challenges. Two Western researchers have taken their childhood experiences in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and formed research teams to address these challenges.

Growing up in Bangladesh, Ataur Rahman knew well the devastation caused by flooding. Decades later, his research on flood risk has changed the practice of flood estimation in Australia.

A childhood concern for people having trouble sourcing quality water in Sri Lanka led Professor Sathaa Sathasivan to develop a disinfectant technology for treating drinking water.

TUBERCULOSIS MODELLERS SAVING LIVESA supercomputer experiment, using advances in maths and genomics, modelled antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis transmission to help save lives.
