Template structure PowerPoint templates have a set of Master slides that form the basis of all the sample slides. In this template there is a total of 53 Master slides split between three sub-sections.

1. University of Melbourne - includes the different types of slides used in the main part of the template.

2. University of Melbourne Patterns - this is a set of 24 duplicates of the title and section break slides with each of the University of Melbourne patterns.

3. University of Melbourne – Layout B - an alternative selection of internal slides with a background graphic in the top left corner. These slides can be used to break up long presentations, or simply to add a more visually engaging slide option.

Inserting a new slide

▪ Click on the Home tab, and select the ‘New Slide’ drop-down menu to bring up a list of all the Master slides

▪ Click the slide you want, and a new version will appear below the slide you were previously on. If you want to change an existing slide to reflect a different Master slide, click on the Layout button to bring up the same list of master slides. Click on the one you want, and it will change the layout of your slide. If the new layout is a bit different to your original, some elements, such as images and text boxes, may move around a bit. To fix this, click on the Reset button, but be aware that in some cases there might not be a corresponding text or image placeholder, so you might need to do a bit of manual formatting.

Working with images If you’re adding an image to a new slide, click on the image icon at the centre of the placeholder. To change an image:

▪ Click on the sample image ▪ Delete, to reveal a blank placeholder, ▪ Click on the icon at the centre of the grey placeholder. ▪ If there is any text or graphics on top of the image, you will need to press the reset button to make

everything move back to the correct location. If you need to change the size, or position of the image within the frame:

▪ Click on the image, then select: Picture Tools > Format > Crop ▪ Click on the white corner handles to resize, and ▪ Click and move on the centre of the image to move it in the frame.

You can also compress the size of the image within PowerPoint by clicking on ‘Compress Pictures’. It’s a good idea to check the ‘Apply only to this picture’ check-box, unless you’re sure you want to compress all images within the presentation.

Type styles PowerPoint doesn’t have a convenient list of type styles like Word. Instead it uses a system of List Levels. There is a possible selection of up to nine different preformatted type styles in any text box. To move through the styles, select the text to change, then click on the Increase or Decrease List Level buttons, under the Home tab.

Using the Identifier All the title slides have a text box for an identifier. On new slides this will appear as one line.

▪ Add the first line of the identifier first, ▪ Press return to add a new line, then press the Increase List Level to change to a non-bold format and type

the second line of the identifier.

Finishing the presentation. Once you’ve finished editing the presentation, save it as a PowerPoint presentation (pptx file) or a .pdf.
