Dear Parents and Family Members,

Congratulations on your student’s admission to the University of Maryland! I have worked at the University for over 35 years and I have seen the campus grow into one of the best public institutions in the country. Our students have excellent academic credentials and our campus prides itself on being a diverse community that welcomes students from around the world.

Your student will be embarking on an exciting time in their lives. College provides a time when your students will expand their minds while finding their place in the campus community. We welcome them with open arms to our student-focused institution. The talented faculty and staff will challenge their thinking while supporting their individuality on campus.

The Office of Student Orientation and Transition provides services to students to ease their transition. The first step in this process is New Student Orientation. During orientation, students will meet with an academic advisor to plan and register for their first semester of college classes. They will also learn about all of the services and resources available to them during their personal and academic journeys. They will have the chance to meet and interact with other students during the program, and we hope that they will leave excited about joining our extraordinary campus community.

Our undergraduate student Orientation Advisors are excited to meet your student and welcome them to the University of Maryland!

Sincerely,

Gerry Strumpf, PhDDirector, Office of Student Orientation and Transition
