The UK Markey Cancer Control Program

• Monitors all cancers diagnosed and treated in Kentucky

• Provides this data to communities and helps local groups identify cancer problems and find solutions

• Brings together researchers to develop new cancer control approaches

• Operates two nationally funded research centers that focus on rural populations, including Appalachia

• Works with a wide variety of partners across the state

The Kentucky Cancer Registry


• Kentucky’s population-based central cancer registry

• Funded by the Kentucky Legislature and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

• Gold-certified as one of the premiere cancer registries in North America

• Part of the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program



KCR data

• Shows age-adjusted cancer incidence rates by county and Area Development District (ADD)

• Includes demographic information (age, sex, race, etc.) and cancer-specific information (type, stage, treatment, etc.)

• Is managed by a state-of-the-art electronic data system



• Shows how age-adjusted cancer incidence rates in Kentucky are different from those reported by NCI’s SEER Program

• Shows how age-adjusted cancer incidence rates in Kentucky have been increasing each year since 1995 while the SEER age-adjusted rates have been decreasing

Prevention Research Center


• One of 24 centers within the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Prevention Research Center Network

• Conducts research in collaboration with other cancer surveillance, education, outreach and research programs in the region

• Serves Appalachian regions of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia

• Focus on lung, cervix, colorectal and breast cancers

• Conduct research on cancer risk factors in Central Appalachia

• Design, implement and evaluate interventions

• Link prevention research to public health and clinical practice

• Provide cancer prevention and control research training opportunities to clinicians and scientists throughout Central Appalachia

• Funded by the National Cancer Institute

• Sponsors a five-week residential summer camp at the University of Kentucky

• Available to 9th-grade students from under-represented and low-income groups, such as Appalachian, Asian-American, Black American, Hispanic American, and Native American

• Group study of case histories of selected cancer-related issues

• Academic experiences in science and mathematics

• Learning skills instruction

• Career exploration in science, mathematics, engineering, science research, and health careers

• Site visits and field experiences


Goals

• Enhance students’ scientific, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills

• Promote interaction and friendships among faculty, staff and students

• Encourage youths to consider careers in science, especially cancer research
