BEAST FEaST 2015BEAST invites you to three days of music, conversation and ideas with guests from the UK, Germany, and Canada. Composer Manuella Blackburn will present recent pieces from her striking and individual body of work. David Prior, one half of sound/art/architecture duo Liminal, will create a new version of his installation work Of This Parish, using recordings of the University’s beloved clock tower, Old Joe. Julian Rohrhuber collaborates with BEER to create Word Music, which makes use of his new Steno live programming language to ‘think aloud, in words that mean programs and letters that shift meanings.’ Percussionist Daniel Tones presents works by Javier Alvarez and Christos Hatzis.

hello! The summer term is one of yin and yang

for our students with exam stress and essay deadlines looming, but there is light

at the end of the tunnel as students from across the campus get together to present the Summer Festival of Music (7-19 June). When they are not in the library working, or in a practice room, our students are busy planning and rehearsing for this eclectic music festival - including three performances of Benjamin Britten’s opera Albert Herring, jazz gigs, orchestra and band concerts, al fresco performances and chamber music concerts.

It is not just students that you can see in concert over the next few months - we also welcome the captiviating La Venexiana from Italy in the Barber Evening Concert Series for a performance entitled ‘L’Arte del Madrigale’, a celebration of the secular part songs of Claudio Monteverdi (Wednesday 6 May). We continue our regular Barber Lunchtime series every Friday in May. So, we are all set for a fantastic term of music at the University, and we hope that you (and the sunshine) can join us.

Albert Herring by Benjamin Britten

Matthew Knight directorJessica Norton music director

Nestled deep in the English countryside, the quaint little town of Loxford is in a state of complete moral chaos. As values slip ever lower, and skirts climb higher, the search for a virtuous girl to take the place of May Queen is getting desperate. Determined to restore purity to the town, a committee of do-gooders elect Albert Herring to be their May King and a shining example for the community. However, there’s mischief about and not all is to go to plan… Britten’s only comic opera, Albert Herring is a charming and farcical musical treat, presented by the Summer Festival Opera with a talented student cast.
