Maktab Perguruan S u l tan I dr i s ( MP S I ) , t o train t eachers

for the Ma l ay p r imary s choo l s . The c o l l ege o f fered

academ i c as we l l as pro f e s ional t r a i n ing .

Two years l a t e r , the c o l le ge e s t ab l i shed a ' Pe j abat

Karang-Mengarang ' and ' Pe j abat Penterj emah' headed by R . O .

Wins t edt and Za ' ba , a prominent Ma l ay inte l l ectua l . In

add i t ion t o wr i t ing and trans l at ing l i t erary works , the

c o l lege a l s o encouraged t r a ine e s to read nove l s and

poetr ies . After Ma l a ya gained independent from the B r i t i s h

i n 1 9 57 , MP S I cont inued t o t r a in pr imary s choo l t eachers .

poems wr i t t e n by f ive poets , name ly , S uhaimi H j . Muhammad ,

Kemala, Dharmaw i j aya, A . Wahab A l i and Rahman Shaar i .

l i fe o f a s o c iety , thi s s tudy a im s t o c l ar i fy the

t ionship between s e l f - int r o s pe c t i o n of the poets and

e l ements o f l i f e in the s oc i e ty . In order t o show

the

r e l a

t he

the

r e l at ionship , the s o c i o l o g i c a l appro a c h wa s used whereby

aspects such as theme s , func t i on o f poems

e f fe c t s on the s o c i ety a s we l l a s the phi lo s ophy

were cons idered . The r e s u l t s o f t h i s s tudy

and their

o f poem s

show that

f i r s t ly, there was a s trong r e l at i o n s h ip b e tween s e l f

introspec t i on o f p o e t s and f am i ly i s s u e s . S e c ondly , there

was a s trong r e l a t i onship between s el f - introspe c t ion o f

poets t o both the rural and urban s o c ie t i e s .
