almost $377 M. Results for hand sanitizers and heavy-duty hand cleaners were the most disappointing, with sales declining 11.3% to $82.4 M and 18.5% to about $2.7 M, respectively. Soap sales in department stores fell 2% to $17 M in 2011. The slow growth, or no growth, is attributed to the lingering effects of the recession. The Russian bathroom products market rose steadily in 2011, as indicated by a healthy sales growth of about 8%, owing to several factors, including the improvement in the Russian economic landscape that continued throughout 2011. The Russian bath and shower market, which has shown signs of maturity in 2012, is projected to show even greater sustainable annual growth in the near future. Avon and Palmolive remain as the market leading brands, with market shares of 22.7% and 21.2%, respectively. They are trailed by Nivea (Beiersdorf) with 18%. Dove (Unilever), Camay and Timotei (Unilever) are among the top six brands. Experts say that gains in the liquid soap market have been impressive both in value and volume, despite the decline in solid soap consumption. In Jan-Jul 2012, Russia’s soap market grew by 14.9% from the 2011 level. The volume of Russian-made soaps, however, is declining. Production was lower by 8.8% in 2011 compared with the 2010 level. More than 86% of bulk production in Jan-Aug 2012 was accounted for by Volga, Central and North Western Federal Districts. The volume of imports fell by 5.5% from end-2011, compared with 2008 levels. Exports of soaps made in Russia in 2011 were valued at $10.5 M. Procter & Gamble’s Olay brand has been successful in integrating the anti-ageing agents from its skin care line into its line of body washes and bar soaps, as well as seeing growing market share for its Cover Girl line of colour cosmetics. P&G’s Crest line of oral care products achieved a third-place ranking in terms of brands. However, as economic recovery was slower than anticipated, and the labour market remained fragile, overall sales growth was not as strong as the growth shown in pre-recessionary years. The beauty and personal care market is projected to grow at a modest constant value rate through to 2016. While retail sales are not expected to be excessive, some products, such as anti-ageing skin care, will continue to outpace overall market growth, stimulated by the ageing consumer base.
