I. CollegeofNursingHistoryandOrganization

HistoryAtitsfoundingin1953,theCollegeofNursingofferedthefirstbaccalaureatenursingprograminpublichighereducationintheCommonwealthofMassachusetts.Fouryearslater,theCollegelaunchedthefirstMasterofSciencedegreeprogram,andin1994,theCommonwealth'sfirstpubliclysupportedPh.D.programinNursingincollaborationwiththeUniversityofMassachusettsMedicalSchoolGraduateSchoolofNursing.In2005,thecollegeoffereditsfirstPh.D.programsponsoreduniquelybytheCollegeofNursingandin2006thefirstDoctorateofNursingPractice(DNP)programinthestate.

ContinuousaccreditationfirstbytheNationalLeagueforNursing,andcurrentlybytheCommissiononCollegiateNursingEducation(CCNE),alongwiththesuccessofgraduatesinpassingbothlicensingandcertificationexams,testifytotheenduringqualityofthecollege'sprograms,faculty,andcurriculum.

TheCollegeofNursingisoneofelevenschoolsandcollegescomprisingtheUniversityofMassachusettsAmherst,foundedin1863.TheUniversityisaCarnegieDesignatedResearchUniversityVeryHigh(RUVH)andtheflagshipcampusofthefive-campuspublicuniversitysystem.Sponsoredresearchnowtotalsover$140millionayear,withincreasingemphasisonthelifesciencesandbiotechnologyapplications.

II. UndergraduateBachelorofScienceProgram

GeneralInformation

TheCollegeofNursingoffersanundergraduateprogramleadingtotheBachelorofSciencedegreeandiscomprisedofthreetracks:thefouryearcollegemajor,theacceleratedtrackforsecond-degreestudents,andtheRNtoBStrack.ThisprogramisapprovedbytheMassachusettsBoardofRegistrationinNursingandisfullyaccreditedbytheCommissiononCollegiateNursingEducation(CCNE),anationalnursingeducationaccreditingbody.Completionofrequirementsispartofthequalificationforthenon-licensedgraduatetotaketheNationalCouncilLicensingExaminationforRegisteredNurses(NCLEX-RN®),aprerequisitetoworkingasaregisterednurse.

Thenursingmajorbuildsongeneraleducationrequirementsandcoursesthatprovidethefoundationforanapproachtonursingsciencethatishumanisticandscientific.Lectures,casestudies,groupprojects,seminars,clinicalpractice,simulationinthelaboratorysetting,multimodalcontent,self-pacedmodulesandindependentstudiesareused.Communityagenciessuchasseniorcitizencenters,colleges,ambulatory-carecenters,communityhospitals,medicalcenters,home-careagencies,long-termcarefacilities,andcommunityandpublichealthagenciesareusedforclinicalpractice.Facultyassistsstudentsinexploringnewareasandinlayingthefoundationforacriticalthinkingandproblem-solvingapproachtonursingpracticeandresearch.

TransferStudentsAverylimitednumberofpositionsfortransferstudentsmaybecomeavailableeachyearonaspace-availablebasis,butthereisnoguaranteeastothesemesterinwhichatransferstudentwouldbeabletoentertheprogram.Opportunitiesfortransferareofferedfirsttoon-campusstudents.

TheAcceleratedTrackisacourseofstudyofferedthroughtheDivisionofContinuingandProfessionalEducationundertheauspicesoftheCollegeofNursing,forindividualswithanon-nursingbachelor'sdegreewhoareinterestedinpursuingprofessionalnursing.Thisisafulltimefast-pacedprogramthatrequiressignificantdedicationandcommitment.Studentsspend4-5daysperweekintheclassroomandinclinicalsites.Preparationforclassandclinicaliscriticaltosucceedinthisprogram.Outsideemploymentisdiscouraged.Theprogrambuildsonthestudents’previouseducation,experience,andrequiredprerequisites.Lectures,casestudies,groupprojects,seminars,clinicalpractice,simulatedlaboratory,independentstudy,multimodalcontentandself-pacedmodulesprovidethefoundationforanapproachtonursingthatishumanisticandscientific.Communityagenciessuchasseniorcitizencenters,colleges,ambulatory-carecenters,communityhospitals,medicalcenters,home-careagencies,long-termcarefacilities,andcommunityandpublichealthagenciesareusedforclinicalpractice.Completionoftheprogramispartofthepreparationforentry-levelprofessionalpractice,totaketheNCLEX-RN®licensureexam,andtohavetheacademicfoundationforgraduatestudyinnursing.Studentswhosatisfactorilycompletethe57residencecreditswillbeawardedaBachelorofScienceDegreewithamajorinNursing.This17-monthtrackbeginsinAugust.

WhileenrolledintheUniversityofMassachusettsAmherstCollegeofNursing,allpre-licensurestudentsareexpectedtoabidebytheProfessionalConductStandardsatalltimes.Thispolicyisapplicableonlytopre-licensurestudents;allotherstudentsareheldaccountabletotheBoardofNursingforadheringtothesestandards. Failuretoabidebythesestandardswillresultindisciplinaryactionthatmayincludedismissalfromthenursingprogram.

Procedure:

1. AllstudentswillreceiveacopyoftheProfessionalConductStandardsatthestartofthefirstdesignated

nursingcoursefortheirprogram.Thestandardswillbereviewedandthestudentwillsignanacknowledgementformthatwillbeplacedinthestudent’sacademicfile.

2. Atthebeginningofeachsubsequentacademicyear,theProfessionalConduct Standardswillbe

reviewedwithstudentsbytheappropriatecoursecoordinators.

3. Violationofthesestandardswillresultinthefollowingdisciplinaryaction:

FirstViolation:

1. Thefacultymemberwillgivestudentanimmediateoralwarning.TheincidentwillbedocumentedbythefacultymemberontheViolationofProfessionalConductStandardsform.Onecopywillbegiventothestudentandonesignedcopywillbeplacedinthestudent’sacademicfile.

2. Ifthisviolationisofaseriousnature,itmaybereferredtotheAssistantDeanofUndergraduateEducationandtheAssociateDeanforAcademicAffairsforfurtherdisciplinary action,whichmightincludedismissalfromtheprogram.

SecondViolation:

1. ThefacultymemberwilldocumenttheincidentontheviolationofProfessionalConductStandards

form.Followingdiscussionoftheincidentwiththestudent,thefacultymemberwillforwardacopyofthesignedformtothecoordinatorandAssistantDeanofUndergraduateEducationforreviewandrecommendationregardingfurtheraction.

2. TherecommendationofthecoordinatorandAssistantDeanofUndergraduateEducationwillbeforwardedtotheAssociateDeanforAcademicAffairsforreviewandrecommendationsregardingreprimandordismissal.Ifnecessary,theAssociateDeanforAcademicAffairsrecommendationwillbeforwardedtotheDeanoftheCollegeofNursingforfinaldecision.Thisdisciplinary actionprocesswillbedocumentedandplacedinthestudent’sacademicrecord.

PolicyforUndergraduateElectronicTesting-Students

1. TestingintheCollegeofNursingpreparesstudentsinasimilartestingenvironmenttocurrentlicensuretesting(NCLEX),whichisastrategyforyoursuccess.

2. Testingaccommodationsshouldbepresentedtotheinstructoratthebeginningofthesemester.

3. Seatingwillbeatthefaculty’sdiscretionandmaybeassigned.Itisinyourbestinteresttoarriveatthe

testingroom15minutesearlytoensureanon-timestart.Studentsmaynotbeallowedtoentertheroomafteranexambegins.

4. Testingdeviceshouldbefullychargedandhavethetestdownloadedbeforearriving.Studentsshould

restarttheircomputersandbeconnectedtoEduroambeforebeginningtheirtest.StudentsarenotpermittedtohaveanyprogramsopenontheirtestingdevicebesidesExamplify.

5. Allbagsandbelongingsaretobeplacedeitheratthefrontoftheroomorawayfromthetesting

environment.Nootheritemsmaybepresentonthedesk,includingwaterbottles,mugs,orblankpaper.Nohats,headphones,orearbudsareallowed.Itemssuchasphonesorotherelectronicdevicesshouldbeturnedoffandstored.

2. Beforeyoucometonursingschool,youmaybeginthecredentialingprocessbytakinganAmericanHeartAssociationBLSforHealthcareProvidersCPRclass,seeingyourhealthcareprovider,receivinga2-stepTBtest,andgettingimmunized.

ThestudentmaybereferredtoUniversityHealthServicesorthestudent’shealthcareproviderofchoice.Thestudentisresponsibleforallhealthcarecostsforher/himselfincurredintreatmentofsaidinjury,bothimmediate careandanynecessaryfollow-upcare.TheCollegeisnotfinancially responsibleforanycostsincurredbythestudent.

NationalStudentNurses’AssociationandUMassStudentNurses’Association TheNationalStudentNurses’Association(NSNA)isanorganizationthatwasestablished in1952,withtheassistanceoftheAmericanNursesAssociationandtheNationalLeagueforNursing,topreparenursingstudentstobeactivenurse leadersandparticipantsintheirprofessionalorganizations. TheStudentNurses’Association(SNA),achapterofthenationalassociation,isaregistered studentorganizationthathasbeenformedinconjunctionwiththeCollegeofNursingatUMass.SNAwasdevelopedtomeettheneedsandgoalsof studentnurseswhileenabling themtogrowsociallyandprofessionally. TheSNAisaveryactiveorganizationfocusedonleadershipandfellowship. Inacommunity-focusedatmosphere,SNAallowsthestudenttoexplorethemanyaspectsofthenursingprofession.

AllnursingmajorsattheuniversityareencouragedtoparticipateactivelyinSNA. Inthisway,studentsareabletolearnleadershipandorganizationalskills,whichareexpectedinthe practiceofprofessionalnursing.SeveralprogramsthatSNAhassponsoredthroughouttheyearshavegainedthesupportofthestudentbodyandhascontributedtotheongoingsuccessofthisorganizationwithintheCommonwealthandnationally.ThePresidentforthe2017-2018academicyearisNickMorey,[email protected] bi-weeklymeetings. SigmaThetaTauInternationalSigmaThetaTauInternational(STTI),HonorSocietyofNursing,wasfoundedin1922bysixnursingstudentsatIndianaUniversity.SigmaThetaTauInternationalnowisthesecondlargestnursingorganizationintheUnitedStatesandamongthefive largestandmostprestigiousintheworld.

SigmaThetaTauwasorganizedtoencourageandrecognizesuperiorscholarshipandleadershipachievementattheundergraduateandgraduatelevelsinNursing.MembershipisavailablebyinvitationthroughactivechaptersandassumesacceptanceofthepurposesofthesocietyandresponsibilitytoparticipateinachievingthegoalsconsistentwiththeprofessionalandscholasticcharacterofSigmaThetaTau.

TheBetaZeta-At-LargeChapterattheUniversityofMassachusettsatAmherstwasestablishedin1972asthefifty-secondchapterofSigmaThetaTauInternational.Itamendeditscharterin2002toincludeaffiliationwiththeElmsCollege,Chicopee,MA. In2006thechapteragainamendeditschartertoincludeAmericanInternationalCollegeinSpringfieldMA. Itiscommittedtoservingitsgrowingmembershipinthedevelopmentofknowledge,encouragementofprofessionalachievementandtheadvancementofnursingthroughresearch.

Membershipisconferreduponstudentsinbaccalaureateandgraduatenursingprogramsandnursingleadersinthecommunity,whodemonstrateexceptionalachievementinthenursingprofession. Membership isbyinvitation and takesplacein the FallSemester for those students at the senior level.
