Personal Statement

My interest in Psychology dates back to my early years in high school, where I excelled at social sciences and had a true passion to decipher people’s actions and behaviors. I began taking Psychology courses my first year in college, in which I earned all A’s, my first year, so it became only logical to continue the pursuit of a degree in Psychology.

When I began my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a plethora of course and variations of the field of Psychology. At this point, I had no idea that Psychology had so many counterparts, but now I can fully appreciate why. My study ethic and passion for psychology is seen in my GPA of 3.6.

Upon the first two years of my college studies, I became enthralled with the field of Clinical Psychology and then made the decision that a PsyD is my ultimate goal, and I will not stop until I achieve this. There are several courses that peaked my interest, that lead to me making this decision. The course Abnormal Psychology and the course Counseling Theories are the two most powerful courses that triggered an even stronger passion for Psychology. I learned many practical theories, and how they relate to behavior, but was then challenged to pick a particular theory that I felt best suited my preferences. At this point in time, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, was and is my chosen preference. After continuous study on this particular theory and concept of therapy, I realized that this particular theory and therapy style matches most with what I believe. I believe that for a person to make a change in their life, they must want to make that change. The best way to help a person understand that they possess the want, is to change their cognitive processes so that their behavior in turn will change.

Personal Statement Continued

In terms of career, I see myself within the next 4 months, working in a clinic setting as an assistant to a Psychologist and/or Counselor. Having the hands-on experience, I feel will best suit me for my future educational goals of obtaining a PsyD in Clinical Psychology. My doctoral studies will prepare me for my future goals of being the practicing Clinical Psychologist in a hospital or clinic setting in which I will work with my clients and help guide counselors as to their treatment plans as well. Achieving the PsyD degree will only further the skills, I will obtain while working as an assistant, in critical thinking, treatment philosophies, client care, and case reports.

Reflection

Through the past 3 years, I have grown in more ways than simply knowledge. I have learned the application, research skills, written format, and communication needed in the field of Psychology. The field of Psychology is a passion of mine, that has only grown deeper within these last 3 years of attending Argosy University. Each class that I have taken, has opened my eyes to other theoretical approaches, other opinions regarding treatment modalities as well as expanded my own preference of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

I do have areas of opportunity in the field of the actual application of the theoretical approaches, other than simply case scenario and case studies given by the professors. I have a consistent understanding of how psychological principles apply to issues issues and situations at a personal, social, and/or organizational level. I can consistently apply psychological principles in my everyday decision-making and interactions with others, in the news, and in organizations I come into contact with such as schools, workplaces, and places of worship and recreation.

My personal and biggest strengths include recognition of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, applications and historical trends. In other words, I am able to evaluate everyday situations, events and experiences and explain how various psychological theories explain these instances.

My Future in Learning

Learning is a lifelong process. As my educational goals continue to grow past my completion of my undergraduate studies in Psychology, the learning is continued. In less than one year, I will begin a new education adventure into a doctoral studies program that will allow me to gain my PsyD in Clinical Psychology. Even after completion of my PsyD, I will need to continue to learn through continued education courses as well as learning from other professionals within the field. The mind is a terrible thing to waste, and I will not allow that to happen!
