The Bachelor of Education Primary prepares teachers for the Australian Curriculum, the standard for teaching delivery in Queensland primary schools.

Choose to study the Bachelor of Education Secondary, and complete discipline subjects in two disciplines, allowing you to teach across two subject areas at high school level, from Grade 7 to 12. Choices of Physical Education and Vocational Education and Training are available.

RATEP is a community-based Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teacher education program.

As an Indigenous student, you can gain primary teaching qualifications while studying at a RATEP site in your own community. To date, The program has successfully increased the number of qualified Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers in Queensland schools.

Professional experienceProfessional experience forms a key part of education studies. Practical classroom skills begin in the first year, as in-service learning broadens education skills and experience. The University encourages participation in a project with a focus on sustainability, related to your role as a teacher. You will focus on activities that promote social and environmental responsibility, skills that prepare you for future roles with students and in the wider community. Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander student supportJCU employs full-time Indigenous Student Support Officers (ISSOs) to assist Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with academic, financial and mentoring support.

Scholarships and bursaries are available, while other resources include the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) and the national Indigenous Cadetship Scheme (ICS), which provides supplementary wages and work experience.

Tacita ThorogoodStudying Bachelor of Sport & Exercise Science- Bachelor of Education (Secondary) joint degree

I always look forward to the workshops and the amount of hands-on experience I get with my studies each week. Its also a great way to meet other students.

I’m studying a joint degree to give me more career opportunities when I graduate.

A highlight of my study at JCU has been the class sizes and the easy access I have to my lecturers outside of classes. They make me feel like a person and not just another student.

In the immediate future I aim to work in the Townsville region teaching science and/or physical education to secondary school students. In the long term, I want to develop innovative new health and physical education programs within all schools to make health a life style, and not just something kids are told to do.


Early Childhood Education

What is Early Childhood Education?Early Childhood Education focusses on the education of children from birth to eight years of age. The study of Early Childhood Education covers a range of disciplines including child development and psychology, theories of learning, curriculum and assessment, and the diversity of learners and learning needs within the early years.

Course overviewEarly Childhood Education is a highly-specialised field and this course is the most effective way to enter an early childhood teaching career. The course has a special focus on Kindergarten, Prep and Years 1-3 in primary schools.

The course will prepare graduates for working in education and care services, including teaching in schools and preschools. You will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing your professional experience placements.

All students (internal and external) are required to attend a compulsory 5-day on-campus intensive Professional Orientation Program at either the Cairns or Townsville campuses in their final year of study.

Course highlightsStudents will enjoy innovative teaching approaches including online delivery of subjects and online video streaming from one campus to another. Gaining professional experience in schools is integral for Education students at JCU and commences in the first year of study. What is Primary Education?Primary Education plays a major role in building the academic and social foundations for students, and focusses on teaching the primary years. Primary Education teachers usually teach across all curriculum areas in primary schools however, some specialisations are also available.

Lucy TuttiettStudying Bachelor of Education (Primary)

It was simple for me. I chose a Bachelor of Education (Primary) because I love to teach and I appreciate the whole process of learning. I also enjoy being a role model for children and giving them valuable life skills.

JCU was my optimal choice, not only because the University offered the course I wanted, but also because Townsville is where I wanted to be for duration of my study.

Learning with my fellow students in the relaxed environment of the University grounds has been a pleasure. One of the highlights of my time here has been taking classes from some very knowledgeable lecturers in the new Education Centre building.

Ideally, I’ll be a primary or middle school teacher next year and love what I do.

Physical Education – Primary

What is Primary Physical Education?Health and Physical Education teachers are responsible for the coordination and teaching of health and physical education in primary schools. They are also involved in coaching, coordination of sports events, and are qualified primary teachers who are able to teach across all curriculum areas.

Course overviewThis course focusses on teaching physical education in primary schools in addition to general curriculum areas. The course places strong emphasis on gaining interpersonal communication, planning, organisation and management skills, along with gaining expertise in health and fitness areas, including fitness assessment, and sport and exercise nutrition.

You will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing your professional experience.

All students are required to attend a compulsory 5-day intensive Professional Orientation Program in their final year of study

Course highlightsHuman Movement studies at James Cook University are offered under a cooperative program between the Education program and the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science. The course brings together the study of Human Movement, Sport Science and Teaching.

Students will enjoy innovative teaching approaches including online delivery of subjects and streaming from one campus to another. Gaining professional experience in schools is integral for education students at JCU and commences in the first year (Level 1) of study. This involves practical work in schools in urban and/or regional, rural and remote locations, as well as other educational and community sites including some international locations.


Career opportunitiesGraduates teach general curriculum areas plus health and physical education in primary schools. They are also involved in school-based coaching and sporting events.

Primary Education –Thursday Island

What is Bachelor of Education (Primary) on Thursday IslandJCU’s Thursday Island study centre offers its Bachelor of Education (Primary) in partnership with Training and Employment – Education Queensland. This enables local Indigenous people to remain within the Torres Strait whilst completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Education.

Students can enter this course based on their OP or other direct entry criteria. Alternatively, students can undertake JCU’s Tertiary Access Course (TAC) and commence their Bachelor of Education (Primary) at the same time. JCU staff and Education Queensland Teacher Coordinators ensure students have on-site support for their studies.

Course overviewThis 4-year degree focusses on preparing professionals for teaching across all curriculum areas in primary schools. Students will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing their professional placements.


Course highlightsGaining professional experience is integral for Education students, and at JCU, practical teaching commences in the first year (Level 1) of study. Students will have opportunities to undertake professional experience in the Torres Strait and in mainland schools.


Career opportunitiesGraduates will be able to teach Years 1 to 7 in state, Catholic and independent primary schools.

Katherine ColeiroBachelor of Education (Primary) (RATEP), Graduated 2013Teacher, Northern Peninsula Area State College (NPASC), Bamaga

RATEP is a community-based Indigenous teacher education program that allowed me to access my teaching degree through James Cook University. This mode of study enabled me to study externally in my hometown, Bamaga.

I’m very fortunate to have been able to access tertiary education online with support from JCU staff and web-based resources.

In my final year practicum I was given the opportunity to teach at Northern Peninsula Area State College (NPASC), and now I am a teacher there.

At my graduation, I had the honour of giving the graduate address. JCU helped me find myself and gave me a real chance to succeed. This is definitely something worth celebrating.

What is RATEP?RATEP is a community-based Indigenous teacher education program offered to some Queensland rural, regional and remote centres in partnership with Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment – Education Qld and TAFE-Qld. The rural and remote locations offering RATEP include Bamaga, Cairns, Mackay, Mareeba, Maryborough, Mossman, Mount Isa, Ravenshoe, Rockhampton, Roma/St. George, Toowoomba, Weipa, and Yarrabah.

Course overviewThis 4-year degree focusses on preparing professionals to teach across all curriculum areas in primary schools. Students will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing their professional placements.

Neerim CallopeStudying Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

I look forward to each semester. Thinking about meeting new lecturers, reconnecting with peers and furthering my knowledge makes it an exciting prospect for me.

Studying to become a secondary school teacher has universal value. Eventually I plan to teach in remote Aboriginal communities, empowering people through education. First though, hope to take my skills abroad and experience other countries, perhaps teaching in Africa, Asia, England, or the United States.

For me, a highlight of my JCU education is participation in the annual National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games, where I get to meet fellow students who are aspiring doctors, lawyers, teachers and artists. This event is just one of the many opportunities available here, and it inspires me to continue.

Physical Education –Secondary

What is Secondary Physical Education?Health and Physical Education teachers are responsible for the coordination and teaching of health and physical education in secondary schools. They are also involved in coaching and the coordination of sports events.

Course overviewThis course focusses on teaching Health and Physical Education for junior and senior secondary school. Students also need to train to teach in one other curriculum area – for example, Science or English. The course places strong emphasis on gaining interpersonal communication, planning, organisational and management skills, along with gaining expertise in health and fitness areas including fitness assessment and sport and exercise nutrition.

Students will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing their professional experience placements.


Course highlightsJames Cook University’s Institute of Sport and Exercise Science, which has excellent facilities on the Cairns and Townsville campuses, is involved with physical education studies programs.

Students will enjoy innovative teaching approaches including blended delivery of subjects and online video streaming from one campus to another. Gaining professional experience in schools is integral for education students at JCU and commences in the first year (Level 1) of study. This involves practical work in schools in urban and/or regional, rural and remote locations as well as other educational and community sites including some international locations.


Career opportunitiesGraduates teach in secondary schools and are involved in school-based coaching and sports events.

What is Secondary Vocational Education?Vocational Education and Training teachers are qualified to teach within at least one vocational or trade area in addition to a key learning area such as English, Mathematics, Science, the Arts, Health and Physical Education or Humanities and Social Science (for example, History and Geography).

Course overviewThis course is designed for people with a VET qualification who would like to teach in secondary schools. VET subjects taught in schools include Business, Construction Trades, Hospitality, Design and Technologies, Technical Drawing and Manual Arts.

You will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing your professional placements.

Students must separately complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment before entering the final year of their degree.

What is the Graduate Diploma of Education?The Graduate Diploma of Education is a professional preparation program for students who already have an undergraduate degree and want to become a secondary-school teacher or work in fields related to Education.

This course provides graduates with the opportunity to qualify for a teaching profession in one year of full-time study. It is an intensive program meeting the requirements of the Queensland College of Teachers for registration as a teacher.

Alternative Entry Pathways

James Cook University has a commitment to make university education accessible and achievable for a wider range of people in our region. If it has been a while since you finished school, or if you do not have the academic entry requirements for the course you want to study, there are other entry options available to you. Below is a brief overview of some of the alternative entry pathways available at JCU.

Bridging subjects Many degrees in science and health have prerequisites in addition to Year 12 English. If you do not have these prerequisites, you may be able to complete a bridging subject in chemistry or mathematics as intensive subjects over the summer vacation. Upgrading options If you do not receive the OP/Rank required for your preferred course, there are other options to improve your OP/Rank. For example, complete study in another degree or diploma course, or complete a TAFE course. Contact the JCU Student Centre on 1800 246 446 to discuss strategies to help you upgrade your Rank.

Tertiary Access Course (TAC)TAC is a short (six months full time or 12 months part time) preparatory course for students who have not completed high school, or who do not have the academic entry requirements to enrol in some undergraduate courses at JCU. Diploma courses at JCUThe Diploma of Higher Education is a 1-year introductory course (two years part-time) designed to provide students with a supported pathway to higher education success. This course is for students who do not qualify for entry into a bachelor degree, or for those seeking additional support and preparation before moving into bachelor degree study. Students can study a mix of introductory and Level-1 (first year) subjects in the following study streams: • Business Studies• Engineering and Applied Sciences• General Studies (details included in next column)• Health • Information Technology • Science• Society and Culture.

On successful completion of the diploma, students can graduate with the diploma qualification and then apply for entry into a degree course at JCU. Students transferring into a degree course may receive advanced standing for successfully completed subjects.

Alternative entry with QTACThe Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) also take into account any work experience and other qualifications you may have gained since school, so it’s important to list these on your QTAC application and provide supporting documentation. You can also sit the Personal Competencies Assessment and/or Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) with QTAC to improve your rank. AccommodationDeciding where to live

Your accommodation options while studying at JCU, will depend on availability, your budget and your individual preferences. Townsville and Cairns are large regional cities with a range of housing options for students.

JCU also facilitates accommodation for students who are on clinical placement as part of their Health Sciences degree at our study centres across northern Queensland.

Start looking ASAPThe JCU Accommodation Support Service facilitates the online application process for on-campus living in the colleges and halls on the Townsville campus. Competition is strong for this type of accommodation so it is best to submit your application and pay your registration fee early. You may wish to contact the colleges and halls directly and discuss their facilities first.

For accommodation options off campus, the Accommodation Support Service maintains a web database of private rental and share accommodation in houses, units, granny flats, full board and caretaker arrangements in both Cairns and Townsville.

Making a decisionHere are some things to think about when you are deciding where to live:

• How much do the different housing options cost? What’s your budget?

• Do you want to walk to university?

What does it cost? Student halls and colleges on the Townsville campus offer full board, single room and share options, with a range of prices. An average price per week for a student room in a hall or college with full board (all meals provided) can range from $280 to $400. Rental and share accommodation in Cairns and Townsville can cost anywhere from $120 per week for a room in a share apartment or house.

Approximately 1,475 students live in student halls and colleges on campus. Most colleges offer full-board accommodation, providing three meals a day. Some have self-catering options.
