Ugandan Scientifi c Visit

2015

22

The Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) organized and conducted a scientifi c visit for a group of professionals from Uganda at Texas A&M University in July. The purpose of this program was to provide the participants with a comprehensive introduction to nuclear power so that they will have a good understanding of the many elements and dimensions of implementing a nuclear power program and the technical and policy issues surrounding them. It was jointly sponsored by the Ugandan government and International Atomic Energy Agency.

The program included presentations on basic nuclear power plant systems, operations, and safety culture needs, as well as policy issues related to nuclear regulation, human resource development, nuclear waste management, and national

infrastructure. Speakers for the program were subject matter experts from all aspects of nuclear power drawn from industry, utilities, regulatory agencies, and academia. At Texas A&M, the participants visited the Nuclear Science Center and the Cyclotron Institute.

The training program also included a trip to the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company in Wadsworth, Texas, where the participants met with the company leadership, management, and staff involved in all aspects of nuclear power generation. They also met with County Judge Nate McDonald of Matagorda County to see how local governments are integrated into a nuclear power program, and toured the nuclear power training facility at Wharton County Junior College.

The participants included both engineers and scientists, as well as business and fi nancial professionals, who are involved in evaluating the possibility of developing nuclear power in Uganda. This training program will aid Uganda in understanding the steps necessary to establishing a safe and effective utilization of nuclear energy.

Ugandan Scientifi c Visit

College Station, Texas, U.S.A.July 7 17, 2015

expeutilitpartInst

TheProthanThCnf

333

NPI would like to thank all of the sponsors, participants, and speakers who contributed to the success of this training program.

44

Participants

Maxwell OnapaDeputy Executive Secretary

(Ph.D - Epidemiology, M.B.A.)

Naomi ObboEnvironmental Impact

Assessment Officer (M.S.)

Alex NuwagiraProcurement Officer

(Masters - Business/Finance)

Rachel LutaloState Attorney(Masters - LLB)

Sabbiti BagumaNuclear Safety Engineer

(M.S. - Nuclear Engineering)

Yusuf MatovaHead of Communications

(MSC Project Management)

Patrick MuhindoActing Senior Economist(Masters - Economics)

Valeria NakaweesaCivil Engineer

(B.S. - Civil Engineering)

Alex TwesigyeNuclear Scientist

(M.S. - Nuclear Science)

Abel RwendeireInfrastructure and Planning

(Ph.D. - Biochemistry)

Joseph OdoiPrincipal Accountant

(Masters Accounting/Finance)

55555555555555

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

Developing a Nuclear Workforce

Mr. Michael Marler, Senior Project Manager,Accelerant Technologies LLC

Thursday, July 9, 2015

An Introduction - The International Regulatory Development Partnership

Program Ms. Tammy Way, Director, IRDP Program, United States NuclearRegulatory Commission, Washington, D.C.

Thursday, July 9, 2015

Public Acceptance and Local Government Prospective for a Nuclear Power Program

The Honorable Judge Michael Ford, County Judge (retired), Somervell County,Texas

Professional Seminar Topics

6666

Friday, July 10, 2015

New Technologies and Small Modular Reactor Economics

Dr. Sunil S.
