What does “BANK” mean?

Banking system in Pakistan:
“It was 1990 when wheel of banking system started in reverse direction”
By Shujat Ali Baig
Jan 17, 2000
Pakistan‘s banking sector reforms which were initiated in the early 1990s have
transformed the sector into an efficient, strong and sound banking system.
Pakistan ‘s financial sector include scheduled commercial banks which
consists of nationalized , foreign , private and non-banking financial
institutions which include development finance institutions , leasing
companies, housing finance companies and modarbas.Modarba and leasing
companies are controlled by securities and exchange commission of Pakistan.
In addition to this scheduled banks and NBFIs are regulated by State bank of
Pakistan.
80 percent of the banking assets are held by private sector banks.
The minimum capital requirements have been raised from Rs 500 million to
Rs 6 billion over an extended period. The banks now routinely employ MBAs,
M.coms, chartered accountants, IT graduates, economists and other highly
educated persons.
In 1974 banks were nationalized, with the new expectations of achieving
success with bright colours. However, this whole procedure is reverse since
1991, and till now MCB, ABL and UBL have been privatized.

UBL is one of the Pakistan‘s major banks in terms of deposits and advances
with a huge domestic and international network. It is a banking company
which is engaged in commercial and retail banking.
UBL was setup in 7 Nov 1959 and included as a private scheduled bank with
authorized capital of Rs 20 Million. Issued and paid-up capital of Rs 10
million divided into 1 million shares of Rs 10/ each. In 1971 the Government
of Pakistan nationalized it. In 2002, the Government of Pakistan sold it in an
open auction to a consortium of Abu Dhabi Group and Best way
Group. In 2002 it merged its operations in the UK with those belonging
to National Bank of Pakistan to form United National Bank Limited, of which
it owns 55%, with National Bank of Pakistan owning the remainder. A
professional team is appointed in the mid 1997 to restructure the bank.
UBL is having more than 1,000 branches inside the country. Its 15 branches
outside the country are in the United States of America, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain,
and Republic of Yemen. It also has representative offices in Tehran and Iran.
It owns subsidiaries in the UK (United National Bank Limited), and in Zurich,
Switzerland.
Banking operations and services are one of the major needs of an economy.
These include acceptance of deposits and disbursement of advances to
individuals and others at higher rates.UBL, a commercial bank was established
in 1959 as result of reckless efforts made by Agha Hassan Abidi. The UBL
has shown the fastest growth pattern and in a period of just 27 years became
the second largest bank of Pakistan.UBL on October 19, 2002 was privatized
and bought by two financially sound parties of international repute i.e. best
way group and Abu Dhabi group holding 51% of the banks share and thus has
emerged as the largest private bank surpassing MCB.

there. I tried to get all terms, policies and strategies of UBL. United bank is
First class bank in modern era providing good services. Following are certain
pros and corns of UBL, when i critically analyse the bank myself I come to
following points:
PROS & CORNS:
Needs of more employees, as the customer’s rush
increases on daily basis and staff is not enough.
Account opening forms are not in such a language and
format that a lay man can easily understand that.
Counter staff are not as much they should be.
Helpline staff is not much efficient.
There is not any proper sitting arrangement for
customers.
Customers face difficulty while come for submission
of utility bills etc.
Sometimes cheques misplaces due to negligence of
employees, so customers face inconvenience.
All the terms & conditions on Notice deposit and on
Certificate of deposit should be very clear to customers
Salaries of employees should be increased.
Verification of all data takes too much time so
customers feel inconvenience.
UBL should hire experienced and much talented
employees.
Work load is too much on current employees.
Uneven distribution of work and burden on bankers.
Job changing, Downsizing of branches and demotion
of employee are also certain facts now a day’s going on.

Major weaknesses in the UBL are the lack of internal control and Lack of
communication among employees and employers. Some of the internal
weaknesses of UBL are given in following lines:

as weakness according to my opinion, because deserving young employees
wait and wait for their chance and promotions are made mostly on seniority
basis, that is not fair and in fact a weakness of system.

Less efficient computer system & I.T systems.
Slow product Development Process.

“You cannot change your destination overnight, But You can change
Your direction overnight” (JIM ROHN, 1997)
Recommendations are considered very important for describing nay banking
or business whole sector. I analyse all the previous wording and then come to
the certain points where suggestions should be needed.
I suggest that UBL should introduce some new
development courses.
Management in some branches are not too good, in
case of bed debts or sick loans management should inform head departments
about it. Sometimes it could not be done. So management should be best in
this regard.
Political interference in the bank should be prevented
by top management.
I suggest that UBL should take proper care about
documentations and financial presentations.mnt should be changed on basis of
merits, so that new employees and managers can be hired.
New techniques and development should be in access
of a common customer. All customers should be valuable for UBL.
Bank should introduced incentive plans for employees
on regular basis so that if employees may work whole heartedly for the
welfare of their organization completely
More Information should be given to public on Web.
Appraisal system is needed to be better.
