i6 Grant APPLICATIONSUBMISSION PERIOD: APPLICATIONS AND WRITE-UPS ARE DUE BY JUNE 1ST, 2020

OVERVIEW

The University of Alabama at Birmingham received a Federal Award (ED17HDQ0200081) from the i6 Program administered by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). The Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HIIE) is facilitating the grant and making the award available for use by any UAB faculty, staff, or student (undergraduate or graduate) seeking to develop or advance ideas for commercial market. Funds will be awarded pending our internal review process of submitted materials.

All those applying to the i6 program are encouraged to leverage the commercialization initiatives and partnerships established by the HIIE. For example, students are welcome to participate in the Anvil Startup Bootcamp. The program features an opportunity to not only learn about entrepreneurship, but to also develop actionable steps towards launching a business.

Faculty and staff are also incentivized to stop by our office for guidance on the technology transfer process. We work with UAB personnel in accomplishing the shared objectives of enhancing value for their research. Additionally, through our partnerships with UAB schools and campus-wide programs, we engage members of our community and provide assistance as needed.

The i6 Program allows the HIIE to further support and increase innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities for students, faculty, and staff by providing resources to launch sustainable startups with new or disruptive technologies.

APPLICATION AND EVALUATION PROCESS

Interested UAB faculty, staff, or students must complete the attached application form and write-up. The application will assess eligibility. Degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students that have a start up idea are eligible to apply. Additionally, faculty or staff that are seeking to commercialize their research are also welcome to participate. All business models are welcome, including non-profit and commercialization of UAB research.

The completed application form and write-up should be emailed to [email protected]. The application and write-up maybe subject to review by an EDA representative, as well as the HIIE to ensure capital can be allocated for the project.

Applications must include requested award amount. Teams can request up to $50,000. However, applicants seeking more than $10,000 may be requested to present a pitch deck to members of the HIIE. Resubmissions are permitted pending progress has been made since the last application filing.

A proposal write-up template is attached. The framework includes: a clear description of the problem that your idea addresses, a clear description of the proposed solution, a short description of the project that can be shared publicly, a description of the team members and their backgrounds, a high-level project plan including milestones, a description of achievements to date, and a budget plan showing how i6 funds will be used.

Teams can include non-student and non-UAB members. However, they must have at least one full-time UAB personnel (faculty, staff, or student). Teams must disclose other sources of funding, including any government awards or grants.

Decisions will be sent by email and will include feedback from reviewers. Applications requesting greater than $10,000 will receive an invitation to present to members of the HIIE and an advisory group. Presentations will be approximately 10 minutes followed by 5 minutes of questions. A pitch deck template will be provided to applicants in advance of the presentation.

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria: clinical readiness, resources needed, regulatory approval, intellectual property protection, and project sustainability.

EQUITY CONSIDERATION

The HIIE will not request equity from startups that were rewarded i6 funds. However, if the technology is to be licensed from the university setting, a consideration for the institute will be negotiated per our standard policy. Typically, this will only apply to research that generated intellectual property through the use of resources at UAB. Please note: the use of i6 funds will not enhance this equity consideration.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DISCLOSURES (IPD)*

UAB personnel must submit an IPD to the HIIE prior to completing the application for i6 funds. Applicants that have not disclosed their invention to the HIIE will not have their application reviewed. Visit go.uab.edu/disclose to submit an intellectual property disclosure.

*All intellectual property meeting certain criteria set forth in the UAB Patent Policy (which implements UA System Board Rule 509) which is created by a UAB employee or by a UAB student is automatically assigned to UAB upon creation. UAB assigns it to the UAB Research Foundation (“UABRF”). UABRF is the intellectual property commercialization unit of the HIIE at UAB. In addition, certain copyrightable intellectual property may also be owned by UAB if it meets certain criteria set forth in the UAB Copyright Policy.
