LOCATION OF GROUNDWATER

The underground area is divided into 2 zones

The upper zone is the zone of aeration

The lower zone is the zone of saturation

The zones meet at the water table

VOCABULARY

Porous- has holes in itPermeable- water can pass

through a rockAquifer- a rock layer that stores

and allows the flow of groundwater

Spring- water flowing from the ground

Well- man-made hole you get water out of

CAVESCaves are formed by limestone

Stalagmites are deposition on the bottom of a cave

Stalactites are deposition on the top of a cave

SINKHOLES

Depression from limestone

POLLUTIONPoint source- comes from one thing

Nonpoint source pollution- comes from many places

PURIFYING WATERWater goes through a water treatment plant and gets chlorine added to it which gives it its nasty flavor in cities

RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Can be replaced soon after use

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES

Cannot be replaced until millions of years
