EERSTE RIVER: CONVICTS WARN OF LIFE BEHIND BARS
Teens get ‘taste’ of jailRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
High school pupils in Eerste River andBlackheath were given a slight tasteof what life behind bars is like.
The presentation about life in jail and thedangers that accompany it, was hosted by agroup of former convicts belonging to thePrisoners of Christ Ministries. The first presentation was held last week
at Kleinvlei High School and on Monday atBlackheath High School.“It is really something to witness. The
children’s eyes actually widen when theyhear these stories,” said Captain FlorinaMuller, spokesperson for the Kleinvlei po-lice.
Roleplay surprisePrisoners of Christ surprised the children
with a role-play and sketched their own lifeas former prisoners to warn the school chil-dren of life in prison, Muller said. The presentation at Kleinvlei High
School, which forms part of a Safer SchoolsProject, was held in conjunctionwith the po-lice and local artists.
Peter Hendricks and his wife, Sophia, partnered with a friend, Adriaan Samuels,on the initiative and made the event unfor-gettable for these school children, Mullersaid.
Testimony of life in prisonA total of 950 children listened very care-
fully to the talks about behaviour in schoolsand the illegal activities they partake in.“Drugs and gangs were some of the topics
that were discussed.“Prisoners of Christ gave testimonies of
their life in prison, about the illegal activi-ties they were involved in from a young age,and how they were placed in rehabilitationcentres by [the department of] social devel-opment or sentenced to years of imprison-ment,” explained Muller .As part of their social crime responsibili-
ties, Muller, her colleague Keith Africa andthe sector commander, Warrant Officer Jo-hannes Jacobus Alexander, spoke to thelearners about peer pressure, small gangsformed at school, drug smuggling ontoschool premises and the choices they makein life. The children were given the chance tospeak to Prisoners of Christ after the pre-sentations.
Need to knowJulian Unthank, chairperson of the lo-
cal community police forum (CPF), saidas a body they support the initiative.“The young ones need to know what
awaits them when they enter a life ofcrime.“We will however have to wait and see
whether they take note and follow theright path,” he said.He added that theCPFwelcomes the ini-
tiative to warn teenagers about the dan-gers of prison.“Drugs cause a big problem in the area.
The drug bosses make a lot of money andthat business is also the reason there isterritorial fights among the gangs.“These fights spill over into schools,”he
said.Unthank said the drug problem is get-
ting worse by the day and everythingshould be done to prevent young childrenfrom committing crime.

Henry, ’npavan13kinders, staandaagliks
skap of skoolhoof hiervoor gevra nie. Ek
betrokke laat raak.“Met my vrylating in 2014 het ek besluit
Ek wil nie hê an-
der moet dieselfde fout maak nie.”Om vry te wees maak Henry baie geluk-
kig.

“Dis nie so maklik soos ’n mens wil hênie,” sê hy.
Hy sê ’n slangbyt is ’n ernstige affêre.“’n Mens is eintlik dankbaar vir alles wat
jy het en kry ná so ’n vreeslike ervaring,”vertel hy..

Dumping: harsh penalties comingPeople illegally dumping waste or rub-
ble might face a tougher penalty forbreaking the law.
This warning follows a possible change inthe waste by-law – a change that might soonallow for stricter punishment, the City ofCape Town said
Lastweek theCity said inabid to strength-en its arsenal against illegal dumping, which costs ratepayers millions of rands ev-ery year, the mayoral committee has pro-posed an amendment to the integrated wastemanagement by-law – a change that wouldallow for the impoundment of vehicles usedin illegal dumping.
The change in the by-law will soon allowfor the City’s law enforcement agencies toseize, without a warrant, a vehicle that issuspected of or is on reasonable grounds be-lieved to be involved with illegal dumping,Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayco member for util-
ity services, said. The amendment to the by-law was re-
cently approved by the mayoral commit-tee.
Should the full council approve theamendment, it will pave the way for itspromulgation, the City explains.
The seized and impounded vehicle willonly be released if a criminal charge is notlaid or no fine is issued within 48 hours ofits seizure, if the criminal charges againstthe individual have been withdrawn or ifthey have been acquitted of the charged of-fence.
The court may furthermore declare thatsuch a vehicle be forfeited to the state, pro-vided that this would not affect the rightsof any person to the vehicle, they explain.
Individuals found guilty of using theirvehicle for illegal dumping, with that vehi-cle having been seized and impounded, will
need to pay a tariff for its release, the valueof which will increase for the first three of-fences, the City said.
A guilty party will have to fork out R7 500to have their vehicle released for the first of-fence, R10 000 for the second and R15 000 forthe third.
Each subsequent impoundment fee willhave a value of R15 000.
“The City spends around R350m annuallyin its efforts to keep pace with the volumesof illegally dumped waste that appear acrossCape Town.
“It is essential that the City is afforded thechannels and support necessary in order toaddress this ongoing damage to our environ-
mental health and unacceptable drain onour funds.
“Illegal dumpers across the city are collec-tively playing their part in depriving com-munities of services and infrastructure thatcould be put in place with that amount ofmoney, suchas sports facilities or socialwel-fare programmes. Instead, those funds areused to clean up after a few selfish resi-dents,” Sonnenberg said.
The City operates 24 drop-off facilitiesacross the metropolitan that accept variouswaste materials in volumes of up to 1.5 ton-nes three times a day.V Illegal dumping can be reported to the City’s callcentre on 0860 103 089.

Is jy ’n betroubare informant?
ters vertroulike wyse hanteer.

Mountain biking has seen great growth inSouth Africa, and so have the opportunitiesfor aspiring young cyclists.Despite the fact that SA boasts some of the

CT aiming for 10 millionAirports Company South Africa, Cape
Town International Airport, saw asignificant increase in passenger
movement at the airport in 2015 comparedto the previous year.
The overall passenger numbers havegrown by 8.9% – from 8.6 million in 2014to approximately 9.4 million for 2015.
Domestic passenger numbers grew by8,9% while a noteworthy growth was seenin regional numbers with a 12.4% growthand international 8.8% compared to lastyear.
December last year also saw significantgrowth, with just over 736 000 arriving anddeparting passengers moving through theairport. This signals a 13.3% increase com-pared to December 2014.
Domestic arriving passengers grew by12% compared to the month of Novemberwhile international arriving passengersgrew by 5% and regional by 31% for thatperiod.
“December has been our busiest monthyet. Closing off the year on 9.4 million pas-sengers is an important milestone for the
airport and the region,” said Deidre Da-vids, communications manager for CapeTown International Airport.
“We’ve already predicted that by nextyear this time it is highly likely that theairport will have passed the 10 million pas-senger mark and this growth affirmsthat,” continued Davids.
Looking at the last three months of 2015,on the domestic front a total of 2.1 millionpassengers were processed compared to1.9 million in 2014. On the regional front51 304 passengers were processed – an18,8% increase compared to 2014 – whileinternational traffic saw an increase of7.5%.
The growth for the 2015 calendar yearcan be attributed to a number of condi-tions.
On the domestic front, new airlines andairline routes were introduced with FlyBlue Crane being the latest airline to startoperating on the Cape Town route.
On the international front the directflight Turkish Airlines put in place con-necting Cape Town and Istanbul was posi-
tive. During the year SA Express also add-ed the route to Pilanesberg and Airlink toWonderboom.
Ethiopian Airlines was also introducedin the middle of 2015 operating betweenAddis Ababa via Gaborone and Johannes-burg.
“The holiday season is not over yet.March is typically the busiest month of theyear and all indicators are that this seasonwill be one of the busiest ever. It is clearthat traffic growth is strong and steady,”added Davids.
Domestic passengers are reminded toarrive an hour and a half before theirflight and international passengers are re-minded to arrive two and a half hours be-fore their flight.
“Passengers should also consider onlinecheck-in which greatly reduces their wait-ing time at the airport when they utilisetheir airline bag drop counters for theircheck-in luggage. Passengers also need tobe mindful of the time needed to gothrough security and be at their boardinggates on time,” concluded Davids.
Slenters kos mense hul huise, karre en geld“Mense verloor hul huise, karre en groot be-drae geld as gevolg van ‘sangoma-slenters’.”
Só sê maj. Fienie Nimb nadat heelwat slen-ters by die polisie aangemeld is.
“Dié geld moet in ’n swartsak geplaasword. Dan volg daar ’n ritueel in ’n baie don-ker kamertjie.

With recent news reports of a hero dogsaving a nanny from drowning, theproverbial jury seems to be out on
whether being able to swim is a prerequisitewhen looking after the children of others.
Wellness coach and Welgemoed momFrancesca van der Werf is offering basicswimming training to carers. She has beenteaching swimming for over 20 years.
“I think a nanny should be able to swimin case of an emergency. If a child falls intoa pool, you don’t want to waste time withscreaming for help,” she says.“You want a nanny to ba able to jump in
and pull the child out – and do CPR if neces-sary. Of course a net comes first, but acci-dents happen.”TygerBurger subsequently spoke to sever-
al owners or managers of nanny and au pairservice agencies to determine how impor-tant this skill is when employing a childminder, especially in the northern suburbswhere many households have swimmingpools.
The answers were widespread.
Not deciding factorMedical doctor Bianca Steyn from the Sit-
ters 4U agency said they do ask in the inter-view whether or not the incumbent canswim and would feel comfortable saving adrowning child, but says it is not a decidingfactor.
“People are more concerned with the edu-cation and experience of a candidate thantheir ability to swim,” she says.“Obviously, for families with a pool or
those who enjoy the beach it can have im-pact, but I think there are only two to fiveout of 1 000 in Cape Town that can’t swim,so we haven’t really noticed an issue.”
Caron Adams from Au Pair at Home says
because most families in the more affluentsuburbs have swimming pools, they preferto send their children for swimming lessonsearly on, with a lot of the summertime spentin the water. She feels it is imperative that the caretak-
er be able to swim as well.“The au pair or childminder or nanny has
to supervise the children in the swimmingpool and needs to be able to swimher or him-self, in the event of a child being in difficultyin the swimming pool.”She adds this person should also be in pos-
session of a certificate for being able to doCPR.
Christine Rebe from Super Nannies saysfor her agency being able to swim is “inter-estingly enough” not a requirement for thejob.
“Drowning can occur where any waterfeature is concernedandchildren candrownin as much as half a cup of water.
“Parents are being made more aware ofthe importance of having pool nets and fen-ces in place by the time a baby can crawl.I do encourage parents to send their nanniesfor swimming lessons, but ... in all the timewe have been placing nannies – and that isfor the past seven years – I think I have onlyever had that requirement stipulated once,”
she says.“Being able to swimwould not aid in plac-
ing a nanny in a job over someone who can-not swim. The criteria aremore that thenan-ny has no criminal record, that she has rele-vant andup todateworkexperienceand thatshe has contactable references,” Christineadds. She says love for children should be para-
mount and “reliability, trustworthiness andwillingness to follow the mother’s way, aremore important in aiding a nanny in secur-ing a job”.
Some can swimVicky Weinberg from Super Sitters says
being able to swimhas also never been a pre-requisite for placement of a child minder.“However, when I am looking to place a
nanny or au pair with a client who has apool, or a holiday maker – we have a hugeUK client base coming to Cape Town in thesummer who hire houses with pools – I thenselect a childminderwho is a good swimmerand who can be in the pool with the chil-dren,” she says.
“There are some young women – of all ra-ces – on my books who can swim well. How-ever, most of these are white girls. I do nothave a large client base in the northern sub-urbs, but I (also) have a good few northernsuburbs girls registered on my books forbabysitting and or au pair work.”
Vicky says in her 28 years of running theagency, no one has ever pointedly asked fora person able to swim. She adds she will beadding this question to possible candidatesduring interviews.
“Many years ago, I actually taught a childcare course which included First Aid by aprofessional, but including a swimmingclass never occurred to me!”V What are your thoughts on nannies or au pairs be-ing able to swim? Share them with us at [email protected]
Let’s see how many soft toys we cancollect at this year’s Tyger Run!
TygerBear and the three TygersThe three “Tygers” –TygerBurger,Tygerberg 104fm and Tyger ValleyCentre – have joined hands onceagain tohost this year’sTygerRun,taking place on Saturday 27 Febru-ary.
All the proceeds of the 5km eventwill be donated to another “Tyger”,the TygerBear Foundation, so whynot enter the whole family and as-sist a worthy cause?
The TygerBear Foundation of-fers therapy, support and trainingto members of the community whohave experienced some form oftrauma (which include abuse, ne-glect, gang violence, illness andmalnutrition). “We receive ap-proximately 75% of the referrals inthe Western Cape and the amountof cases seen to date has tripled inthe last two years,” says a spokes-person of the foundation.
Organis-ers haveasked par-ticipants tobring along anew soft toy tothe race, whichwill be handed outto the young pa-tients gettingtreatment atTygerBear.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN
Daar wordongeveer 700 km oor vyf dae afgelê.
“Dag een begin by Plettenbergbaai.

Durbanville (t ElShaddai), Tygerberg (t Fairbairn) en HSBellville (t The Settlers) was die wenspannein Saterdag se o.19B-wedstryde.

Following the highly successfulinaugural Let’s Play schoolsphysical education challengeevent last year, involving403 000 pupils from 473 primaryschools, SuperSport relaunchedthe event on Monday.
The challenge is a nationwidefitness competition for Grade 4pupils.
The primary objective of thechallenge is to reinforce curric-ulum oriented physical educa-tion and to promote physical ac-tivity in all schools.
Let’s Play coaching teams willtarget various schools to run thechallenge. The fittest Grade 4pupils from each school willcompete against other schools, after which the top three schoolsin each province will qualify forthe provincial semi-final, lead-ing to an overall provincial win-ner.
The final will take place at theend of October.
The obstacle course challengeis designed for both boys andgirls and will be standardised atevery school. It includes a soc-cer slalom dribble, catch andthrow, mini hurdles, rope pulland an agility drill, all of whichare completed in a matter ofminutes.
While activity is the centralfocus of the challenge, it will al-so draw attention to the socialissue of bullying. UFC athleteand Let’s Play ambassador Gar-reth “Soldierboy” McLellan, aswell as other sports personali-ties, will make appearances atschools to address the issue.
“We believe that this is ameaningful way to get schoolsinvolved in physical activity, particularly as government hashighlighted the need for chil-dren to become more active,”says Vaughn Bishop, head ofLet’s Play. “Kids need not be su-perstars; the challenge is de-signed to accommodate every-one at primary school level.”
The fittest primary school ineach province will compete forthe national title and the prizeof a R1.3m all-purpose, all-weather multi-use sport court tobe built at the winning school.
“Congratulations to River-view Primary School for win-ning the 2015 overall competi-tion.
“Being able to participate insport, provide sustainable pro-grams in our schools and nur-turing young talent is key to thefuture of South African sport inour country. We are proud tocontinue supporting this pro-gram by sponsoring yet anothersport court for the 2016 competi-tion, and enhancing educationthrough sport,” says Anita Ma-thews, executive director of TheSports Trust. The Let’s Playphysical education challenge isendorsed by the department ofbasic education, the departmentof sport and recreation, theSports Trust, the Physical Edu-cation Institute of SA, Unicefand MultiChoice.V Enter your school by calling011 849 7411 or 079 529 8862 (allhours) or emailing [email protected].
