Dit wasvir my ’n groot oorwinning,”sê sy.

was, maar omdat daar so min mans was –hulle was opgeroep vir oorlogvoering – hethulle my ouma aangestel.

Koala ‘rescued’ from roadANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The lost and lonely koala is lyingat the side of a road in Welgele-gen – waiting ...

He is blinded by the lights of an on-coming vehicle, but he does not averthis eyes. His owner finally told someone

who can drive where he was lost! Hiswait is over! They’re takinghimbackto the housewith the long, loving em-brace!The car speeds past, hits a puddle

and soaks the already drenched koa-la. Perhaps it was the water, but fora moment it looks as if a teardropruns down his cheek.Another vehicle approaches, but

this time it stops.“Hey, you! Hello! Help me!” calls

the koala, completely forgetting thatonly people under the age of five canhear a stuffed animal talk. The car idles there until another

arrives. Suddenly a man standsfrowning over him, reaches out andlifts him out of a pool of tears. His name is Miguel de Nobrega.“Thank you, thank you, thank

you,” bellows the koala right up tothe point of the boot shutting closedabove him.“Thankyou, thank ... OK,” he says. The koala soft toy was saved from

the side of the road. Who will savehim from the boot of this car?“Never mind! At least there’s a de-

velopment of sorts,” thinks the koa-la.He hears the man in the car say to

someone else, possibly on the phone:“My fiancé drove in La ProvenceRoad when she saw something lying

on the side of the road. She didn’twant to get out because of safety con-cerns and phoned me. Yes, we livenearby ... It was so drenched Icouldn’t even see what it was.”A few somersaults later and the

boot opened again. It all happened so quickly from

that point in time.Thekoalawas cleanedand inspect-

ed anddid a quick photo shoot for Fa-cebook.“I feel great,” he waxed lyrical to

Miguel and his fiancé, Lisa Mace.“Thank you, thank you, thank ...”The boot lid shuts close again.“OK. Mmm ... That’s OK. Back in

the boot,” says the koala. He hearsMiguel speak to someone

again: “We picked him up some-where near Panorama PrimarySchool! Perhaps he belongs to one ofthose learners? Yes, we just put hisphoto on Facebook, maybe someonecan claim him. He is very furry andalmost like a puppet of some sorts.Wewill ask theowner to identifyhimby his label, which says where thekoala was made. He is obviouslyvery sentimental to someone, so wehope we can help. No, he’s just chill-ing in the boot ...Wedon’twant to gettoo attached to him.”The koala looks at the inside of the

boot againandrecognises eachpatchof complete darkness. He scratches his eye.Stinging pain confirms that his

eyes are open.“I’m beginning to miss the side-

walk,”hemuses, but there isn’t a sin-gle 5-year-old within earshot.V Mail Miguel at [email protected] if the koala belongs to you or aloved one you know.

This real, live, stuffed koala puppet was saved from a wetroad in Welgelegen by hero Miguel de Nobrega. Who will savehim from Miguel’s boot?

Ao. Jacques Mostert, polisiewoordvoer-

selfoonmas-aansoeke in die land.“Hierdie aansoek is afgekeur, so nou sal

By introducing several en-ergy game changers in thecoming months and years,

the Western Cape governmentaims to reduce their electricalconsumption from Eskom by10% by 2020.

This translates to four windfarms, or 400 000 geysersswitched off or replaced by solarwater heaters, or 1000 rugbyfields of solar panels.

Dr Hildegard Fast, head of thelocal government and housingdepartment in the WesternCape, outlined a few points inthis plan at a recent conventionof the Western Cape PropertyDevelopment Forum held inMilnerton.

“The Western Cape economywill not achieve significantgrowth if we continue to haveenergy constraints. For this rea-son the Western Cape govern-ment has prioritised energy se-curity as a game changer for theprovince by reducing our re-quirements from Eskom,” shesaid.

Rooftop solar heatersThis will be done by promot-

ing the installation of rooftopsolar photo-voltaic panels (PV)and solar water heaters alongwith the reduction in energy us-age in public buildings.

She said in Cape Town be-tween 40 000 and 45 000 solar wa-ter heaters have already beencounted by the City.

“By 2020 we would like to seeas much as 155 000 solar water

heaters to be installed at build-ings across the province.”

She added the province is inthe process to set systems inplace to ensure this goal.

“We are visiting municipali-ties wide to make sure that theyhave the capacity to implementthe project successfully.”

In their efforts to reduce ener-gy consumption, the depart-ment is continually deployinglighting blitzes at public build-ings.

“Without any warning wewill show up at for instance amunicipal building on a Fridaynight to check how many lightsare burning unnecessary. Weare taking this very seriouslyand want to reduce the use of en-ergy in government buildingsby 2020 by 30%,” she said.

V&A saves R9m in consumptionMoreover big business will be

incentivised to reduce their en-ergy consumption.

She used the V&A Waterfrontcomplex as an example of howmuch electricity savings can bemade by controlled energy con-sumption. Between 2008 and2015 the Waterfront saved amassive R9 million on energyconsumption.

“This was done by installingspecial devices such as smartmetres that switch off geysersand pool pumps at certaintimes,” she said.

“By adjusting design ele-ments, they managed to save23% on aircon usage,” she says.

The roll-out of independentpower producers will receivemuch attention.

Monark will be performing at Barnyard Willowbridge this month as part of their winter tour.

Monark, Majozishare local stageLOUISA STEYL

@lousteyl

Popular Gauteng band Monark is head-ing to Cape Town. The “cinematic pop” band will be at

BarnyardWillowbridge on Thursday 9 Junewith Durban musician Majozi as part oftheir winter tour.Drummer Graeme Wuth says the four-

piece will be trying a couple of new thingson stage for this show, but adds: “Mostly itwill be about performing our songs live thebest way we can – and that means a little ex-tra something.”Monark has enjoyed commercial radio

success with hits like “Smiling”, “Build itUp” and “Something”, before their debut al-bumNegatives climbed tonumber oneon theiTunes album chart on the same day as itsrelease and went on to rack up three SAMAnominations. The band was born after friends Eugene

Coetzer (vocals and percussion), Ewald Jan-sen van Rensburg (guitar and synth), Deonde Klerk (bass) and Graeme Wuth, who hadall been separately involved in music insome way, decided to start a band.“Unlike many other bands, however, we

didn’t hang out in garages writing songs to-gether, because we had other commitmentsand lived in different cities,” Graeme ex-plains.“Every now and then some or all of us

would get together to knock about someideas.”After forming the band, the guys took

some time to find their unique sound.“There were a couple of false starts, butwhen Ewald and Eugene sat together andwrote ‘Smiling’ we knew there was some-thing worth pursuing. Deon came in on bassand Graeme joined on drums a few months

later.”The result was a signature that they de-

scribe as essentially pop, but with urban, rock and EDM elements.“I know it might seem strange to say we

took a while to find a sound that is prettystraight ahead, but it did,” says Graeme, adding: “Writing a good pop song whilemaintaining an identifiable sound and in-tegrity to themusicyouenjoy is challenging, and we have really come to realise that it’sall about the song.”He adds this sometimes means checking

influences, “and your ego”, at the door, de-spite all four members having pretty strongopinions. While it’s been two years since the release

of Negatives, Graeme says they are continu-ally writing new music and are planning onreleasing new singles in the near future.“The music scene is changing so quickly

and stand-alone singles are more importantnow than they were 10 or 20 years ago, sowe put a lot of effort into getting singles outthere.”Having said that though, Graeme also

hints that theremay be a new album “on thehorizon”.For their winter tour, Monark will be

joined by rising star Majozi who’s beensteadily gainingmomentum in the local mu-sic scene over the last few years. He de-scribes his music as “indie -folk with subtleelectro influences”.“He’s a good friend of ours; we’ve worked

together in the past and he’ll add a little ex-tra friendly warmth to our winter shows,”Graeme explains: “Besides, his music is do-ing great and he can only add to the show.”V Tickets for Monark and Majozi’s show at BarnyardWillowbridge on Thursday 9 June cost R150 and areavailable from www.barnyardtheatre.co.za or021 914 8898.

SLICE OF LIFE

AsSus my daar gekry het, het Bruce Fordy-ce my daar gehou.

Hoendervel-oomblikke!

– Carina Roux

“To stop, or not ...”, TB, 25May refers: I have extensiveexperience of driving in largeparts of South Africa, andsince my retirement also localareas such as the northernsuburbs in particular. Therecan be no doubt that themajority of stop streets aretreated as “give ways”, but askyourself why this is?

A very high percentage ofstop streets are unnecessary asan unobstructed view of anintersecting road or roads isclearly visible many metresbefore one is required to stop.By what perverse reasoningam I required to stop underthese conditions? I do agreethat not all stop streets can betreated in this way and cautionshould be exercised particular-ly where the stop line isn’tsufficiently far enough forwardto see traffic joining fromeither side of my stop line. This requires one to stop atthe line, move forward careful-ly to assess the situation and,if all clear, carry on. Effective-ly, this becomes a yield.

So, if hundreds of “giveways” exist, why not makethem official and remove stopstreet signs where roads orstreets have unobstructedviews or there isn’t a very realpossibility of accidents (forinstance at schools, hospitalsand retirement homes).

Some areas implemented asystem. Edgemead has oneexample where traffic turningleft at a three-way intersectionneed not stop if there is noopposing traffic. This wasvictory for common sense, albeit a small one, where thereasoning appeared to be “ifthere is no need to stop, thenwhy would you need to?”

Why can’t this be extrapolat-ed to my stop street issue?Perhaps one reason might be aloss of R1 500 per non-stoppereven though the likelihood ofthis amount ever being collect-ed is remote.

Finally, how Sakkie Pretori-

Why would youneed to stop?

I refer to “To stop, or not...”,TB, 25 May, concerning baddriving habits. This has beenmy gripe for many years as itannoys me when people blatant-ly disregard the “rules of theroad” – especially the stop sign.

One wonders why those fewextra seconds gained by notstopping are so important?I have often advised friends

and colleagues that I have theanswer! A fine does not work, for sure. What I propose maymean a change to our laws andthat is where the problem willstop. I doubt that Parliamentwould approve – even if it saveslives. Here is what I propose forall transgressions such as notstopping or crossing a solidwhite line: police should place ateam in say a suburb for acouple of hours in the morningand go to a different areawhenever possible. Make surethey have space where vehiclescould be impounded.1. Stop vehicles that trans-

gress a traffic rule.2. Ask for the driver’s licence.3. When the law permits,

deduct points on the licence forthe transgression.

4. Tell the driver to park thecar in the nominated spot.

5. Tell the driver the fine fornot complying with a legal sign.

6. Tell the driver he / she

Stop them, holdthem – they’ll learn

Years ago we all signed apetition for a speed bump andstop streets in Link Road,Bothasig. We should not havewasted our time.At least 90% of drivers ignore

the stop street signs. Thatincludes the people from EnzaCircle and Osprey Close. Andthe drivers include deliverytrucks from Shoprite, normalvehicles, police vans and evenGolden Arrow buses (whoillegally use the road). Why dopeople think stop streets are forother drivers but not for them? And then we have the speed

bump! There are signs thatspeed has to be reduced to30km/h, but I think no-one hasever seen the signs. People hitthat bump at speed. Trailershave become unhooked, some-one even fell off his scooter; awheel came off ... What is thepoint of traffic signs if so manyignore them?

ous knows that stop streettransgressions are a problem atevery stop street in the City’s10 500 roads network, is beyondcomprehension.

His assertion that if “just oneor two percent of road usersdisobey the rules” (laws?) thenwe can do something about it,is nonsense and will not changeunless and until we have amotivated high profile enforce-ment agency.

Until that time, the maximthat rules are made for the“obedience of fools and theguidance of wise men” willprevail.

My lewewas opgemors. Die naam,Healer Josha, beteken blydskap in my lewe.

His mom, ReneWitten, adds: “He isn’teven supposed to be at thetrials.”Ronan adds: “They se-lected eight players fromBrackenfell High Schoolto go to the first round oftrials and I wasn’t one ofthem. I was sitting inclass, well aware of thefact that it was the firstday of trials, and obvious-ly I was sad and disap-pointed for not making itthrough. However, I wasthen called to my coach’soffice and told to getready. I was on my way toplay in the first trials, andI was ecstatic.“It was quite a rush, asitwas the last periodof theday, so I had to run andcall my mom to bring my

clothes. I had a great time, and a prettysolid game.” This humble tight-head propis only 16 years old and competing in theu.18 trials, where he is taking it one gameat a time, whilst still focusing on hisschool’s rugby season where he plays ina strong first team. The driving force be-hind him is strong family support, whichhe has in abundance. His mother is at ev-ery game towatch her son apply his tradebetween the four white lines. For Ronan, this is a step in the right di-rection for making his dream of playingprovincial rugby a reality.
