The administrative process for the Wel-gelegen couple who plan to build a sec-ond dwelling on their property is well

underway.TygerBurger reported last week in the ar-

ticle entitled “Policy hits your pocket” onDirkSmit’swoeswith theCity ofCapeTownin having their plans approved to build asecond dwelling.Johan van derMerwe,Maycomember for

energy, environmental and spatial plan-ning, has since released an update on theprocess.

“It is important to note that the submis-

sion with the City is not a building plan ap-plication. The building application can onlyformally be submitted once the land use ap-plication has been approved,” Van der Mer-we states.

Smit reckons there is an extensive delayin this approval, but Van der Merwe saysdue process is being followed.“The land use application was submitted

for consent use to permit the constructionof a second dwelling measuring approxi-mately 135m² in extent and a permanent de-parture from the relevant common bounda-ry building lines,” continues Van der Mer-we.

“Based on the extent of the proposed sec-ond dwelling, the application was circulat-

ed to internal departments in Novemberlast year. Commentswere received from theCity’s Transport for Cape Town directorate, which supported the application, subject tocompliance with certain conditions.”Oneof these conditionswas that theSmits

pay the development charge of R18 466,40.Van derMerwe says this informationwas

sent to Smit’s consultant in December lastyear.“An approvalwas granted on 18April this

year, which includes the amount as part ofthe conditions of approval.“The City’s Planning and Building Devel-

opment Management Department is cur-rentlywaiting for the appeal period to close, prior to finalising the land use application.”

Due process followed; no delay

Wayne Theunis, polisie-

I love you, Mom: Nothing’s more special than a handmade card, and learners fromRiverside College in Burgundy Estate did just that last week when they made theirmothers personalised Mother’s Day cards. Here Michael Africa (left) and Nian Janse vanRensburg, Grade 3 learners, show off their creations.

– Romantha Botha (Die Bur-ger)

Magic of quiltingquite spectacular

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

The magician presents an ordinarypiece of cloth.

“I will now transform it into a jawdropping piece of art,” she says.

She twirls her wand high above her headand intones the magic words: “You-don’t-just-swing-a-magic-wand-at-a-piece-of-cloth-and-then-you-have-a-quilt!”

Right there, where the cloth once laid, was now the exact same piece of cloth.

Daphne de Jager (61), a quilt maker ex-traordinaire from Panorama, doesn’t reallyown a wand. She uses her needle and sewingmachine. But the outcome is every bit asmagical and mysterious as someone pullinga rabbit from a hat.

The quilter takes a variety of textiles andcolours and revolutionises it into anythingfrom a wall decoration or cushion cover toa blanket or a runner.

The end result is quite spectacular. The question remains: “Why does the

quilting bug bite so few young people ormen?”

“We try to encourage young people toquilt, but because needlework has beendropped from the school curriculum, chil-dren don’t develop interest in this. Thereare very few teenagers who can even sowon their own buttons,” explains Daphne.

“In the last three years the Quilters Guildhave made a very special effort with theyouth block challenge. Older quilters will

act as a mentor for a child aged between sixand 18 and then the children are encouragedto make a block quilt, which is judged na-tionally.”

According to Daphne this judging processwas actually completed this weekend.

As for the lack of men in quilting, Daphneproudly says that one of the managing mem-bers of the South African Quilters Guild isin fact a man.

But this is clearly the exception to therule.

General assumptions that quilters areolder and tightly knit women are in manycases correct.

“What people don’t understand is howgratifying quilting can be,” says Daphne.

“For many women it’s a therapy; a crea-tive outlet. Women like cloth, such asclothes and fabric, so if you’ve done a bit ofembroidery or are just interested in work-ing with cloth, then quilting will appeal toyou. And the camaraderie is something tobehold!”

This companionship among quilters wasborn along with the craft by American pio-neers.

Daphne finds the history of quilting fasci-nating, and much like her passion for hercraft which can clearly be seen in her work, her fervour towards history can be heard inher words.

“They were poor people and not much wasavailable, so they took all the loose cloth andsowed it together. It is always fascinating toread what women did to keep busy and what

kind of support groups they formed for oneanother.

“In America there were quilting bees incommunities. If a young girl was going toget married, her mother and her friendswould come together and traditionallymake a block and put this all together byhand.”

Daphne speaks with the authority ofsomeone who’s been quilting all her life, soit’s surprising to hear that she’s only beenat it since 2002.

“I was always involved with crafts frommy teenager years. Then I went to BellvilleLibrary sometime in 2002 and saw this beau-tiful exhibition called Creative Threads, which got me interested,” she remembers.

“I went for some classes and along withseven other women we opened a groupcalled the Stoep Quilters in 2002. We havesince grown to 30 members and meet month-ly here in the Dutch Reformed Church hall.”

Panorama is also the convening point ofthe Quilters Guild, which meets once everyquarter. The guild’s annual general meetingwas held on Saturday at Northlink College, and apparently drew quilters from as far asGeorge.

“The magic of quilting can only truly beunderstood once you have immersed your-self in its glory.”

It transcends cheap, mass-produceditems, eclipses therapy and transforms thequilter into a magician.

The rest can just look on in bewilderment.Abra-quilt-dabra!

Dog attacks – how to protect yourself, child

Never approach unknown dogs

A dog may be a “man’s best friend” but doyou know how to reduce your chances of be-ing bitten by one?According to Samantha Walpole, the sec-

retary of Animal Behavioural Consultantsof SouthAfrica, children are themost at riskof being bitten by dogs and should be educat-ed about how to act around and take care oftheir dogs.“Children are generally drawn to dogs.

Wagging tails are attractive to children. Un-fortunately, the public is ill informed that ifa dog’s tail iswagging, itmeans that it is hap-py and is safe to approach. This is far fromthe truth. Children are also taught that hug-ging and kissing is an acceptable form of af-fection. Itmightbe tohumans, but to caninesthis is perceived as confrontational.“Fundamentally, humans and dogs speak

a different language. When communicationis misunderstood, people get bitten,” saysWalpole, who is also a dog behaviourist andtrainer.Dogs could also turn on their owners as

a result of a number of reasons.Walpole says dogs that bite their owners,

or anyone else, could have an underlyingmedical condition. The dog could also bepushed to a point where it has no choice orcould feel that its life is being threatened.Harsh and confrontational training meth-ods could also be a contributing factor withregards to human related dog aggression.Walpole says that people should purchase

dogs from reputable breeders to minimisethe risk of being bitten.“If you want to purchase a puppy, do your

homework to match the right breed withyour lifestyle. Join a reputable positive rein-forcement socialisation school. Thereshould be continued training to build a goodbond between you and your dog. You shouldseek assistance immediately if there are anyearly signs that make you uncomfortable,”said Walpole. She provides the following tips and urges

parents to educate their children.“Be respectful to your dog. Research and

learnhow to ‘speakdog’. There are anumberof body signals that adogdisplays to indicatethat it is uncomfortable and needs space or

that it likeswhat you are doing. Bywatchingyour dog’s body language and understand-ing what your dog is saying, you are able tostop or change the reason for your dog feel-ing uncomfortable.“Learn what your dog likes and dislikes

and respect these needs. A dog should not betreated like a toy or tested to see how toler-ant it is. Do not poke, push or sit on a dogor pull its tail. Stop what you are doing ifa dog shows discomfort. Signs of discomfortinclude when the dog turns its head awayfrom you, when the dog yawns, flicks histongue out of his mouth or licks his nose, when the dog’s body freezes, when it movesaway, lifts its lips or growls. Also stop whatyou are doingwhen the dog showswhale-eye(pronounced whites of the eye). This is oftenmisunderstood as a ‘guilty look’ when it is

actually an appeasement gesture in re-sponse to the stimulus.”“Never corner a dog and do not reprimand

a dog when it growls. This is a language pri-or to a bite. Growling means that a personshould leave the dog alone. If your dog bitessomeone, do not place the dog in a similarsituation. If necessary, temporarily confinethe dog in a safe area with water and shelterand immediately seek the assistance of aqualified trained and professional animalbehaviourist.”Walpole says an unfamiliar dog should be

ignored.“Do not encourage an unfamiliar dog to

approach you. Quietly and calmly walkaway. Do not turn your back on the dog butrather try tohave your body facing sidewaystoward the dog,” says Walpole.

If the dog approaches to attack you, do notscream, run away or turn your back on thedog. Do not make eye contact as this is oftenperceived as confrontational.“Keep your hands close to your body and

stand still until the dog has backed away oris preferably out of sight. If you have foodon you, break it up into small pieces and un-derarm toss the food toward the dog’s head.If thedogeats, continue to toss the foodwhileslowly backing away to a safe place,” saysWalpole. You can also place something such as a

chair or backpack if available between youand the dog.“If you are unable to escape an attacking

dog, place yourself in a foetal position withyourhead tucked towardyour chest and cov-er your head with your hands.”ER24’s Dr Kumeshan Moodley, who has

treated numerous people for dog bites, saysthat anyone bitten, even if minor injuries, should visit a medical practitioner. He says that one of the main reasons for

this is the possibility of developing infec-tions or rabies. Rabies, a viral and almostalways fatal disease, is mainly transmittedby the bite of an infected animal. The virus exists in the saliva of a rabid an-

imal such as a dog.People who develop rabies could experi-

ence anything from headache, fever, vomit-ing, muscle pain, difficulty swallowing, anx-iety, profuse salivation, paralysis, restless-ness, fear of water and seizures.DrMoodley says that apersonwill notnec-

essarily develop symptoms immediately. Itis possible to only experience symptoms lat-er in life. There is no effective treatment for people

or animals once they develop rabies symp-toms. Hence it is important to seek medicalattention immediately after being bitten.“Treatment of bites depends on the severi-

ty of the injury as well as whether the dogwas a stray, a pet that was immunised or notimmunised. Where it is unknown if the dogwas immunised, as a precaution, the patientwould be treated based on assumption thatthe dog was not immunised,” said Dr Mood-ley.

Ontmoet Riaan*, ’n student by ’n

vooraanstaande kollege.Riaan se lewe was op ’n verwoes-

Die depressiewe jong man was

Nie alle stories is egter so posi-

minder jy weet, hoe minder weer-baar is jy.“Dis baie hartseer.

regering,maarvolgensPotgieter is

dit nooit genoeg nie.“Ons sou so graag meer perso-

oggend so twee of drie liedjies singen daar sal ook items uitgelootword.

Caregivers for elderly residentsThe City of Cape Town’s Social Devel-

opment and Early Childhood Devel-opment Directorate has recruited and

trained nearly 400 people in this financialyear to participate in its home-based careprogramme.

According to a statement, the directoratestarted the initiative in 2014 as part of theVulnerable Groups Programme, to lend ahand to elderly residents in need of assist-ance around the home, but also compan-ionship.

The home-based caregivers programmeemploys workers through the City’s Ex-panded Public Works Programme (EPWP)who render social care services throughpsychosocial support, companionship, housekeeping and light household dutiesas well as referrals to other social ser-vices.

The caregivers offer their services toseniors in their home environment and atold-age homes, clinics and hospitals.

In the first year, 2580 elderly residents

signed up for the programme.Last year that number more than dou-

bled to 5557.This year saw a high level of interest

again, prompting the directorate to reviseits target of 300 caregivers to 400.

All of the caregivers have completedtheir training and have started providingservices to clients.

Mayco member for social developmentand early childhood development, SuzetteLittle, says this speaks to the vulnerabilityof elderly residents – many of whom are nolonger able to do things for themselves, likecleaning the house or even their personalgrooming.

“I’m enthused that so many have takenadvantage of this opportunity. Not onlydoes it mean that little things are beingdone around the house for them, but it alsomeans a break from the loneliness thatmany experience – especially those livingon their own.”

The home-based caregivers are sourced

from the City’s job seeker database and, aft-er their recruitment, the caregivers under-go various training sessions.

They receive in-depth training on theprinciples of home-based social care, eti-quette and proper conduct in caring for anolder person in the home environment.

They are also trained on how to identifyolder people in need through communityprofiling and to provide basic relief forfamily members of older people.

Accredited first-aid training, communi-cation and companionship aspects are alsoaddressed with the trainees.

The home-based caregivers have beentrained and appointed to offer the follow-ing services: Respite relief for family mem-bers and caregivers of seniors, companion-ship, reading, assistance in preparation ofmeals, assistance with light cleaning andlaundry duties, and referral of seniors re-quiring hands-on care or medical care tothe districts for further support.

“The caregivers deserve a special thank

you for rendering this service. Home-basedcare is not an easy task, especially as someseniors see outsiders as a threat to their in-dependence. In many cases the caregiv-ers are also the ones who identify casesof abuse and assist with interventions tohelp stop this cycle,” Little says.

Residents who need assistance of ahome-based caregiver can contact the so-cial development department’s offices:

. The Tygerberg office is located at20 Voortrekker Road in the Bellpark build-ing. Call Elmerie Voorslag on 021 918 7224.

The diversity of the Cabernet Franc varietaland terroir, and the many flavour profilesSouth African winemakers derive from this, was clear at a tasting presented by Capewine master Christine Rudman at the spec-tacular Oldenburg Vineyards near Stellen-bosch recently.

Seven wines were tasted: HPF Swartskaap2012 from Sondagskloof near Stanford, Han-nay Wines 2014 from Elgin, Ormonde On-dine 2013 from Darling, Oldenburg 2013,Raats Family Wines 2013 and Avontuur Es-tate 2011 from Stellenbosch and Druk-my-Ni-et 2011 from Paarl.

The different wines ranged from the fruiti-er but balanced styles of the Ormonde andHannay wines, to the softer rounded profilesof the Avontuur and the Druk-my-Niet, theelegant minerality of the Oldenburg andSwartskaap and the longevity of the Raatswhich will easily keep for another decade.Pricing was a talking point as well as thewines ranged from R85 to R425 per bottle.

“To my mind Cabernet Franc is under-priced in South Africa. Producers don’t al-ways know exactly what they have, as thediverse pricing reflects. The quality and ver-satility of the varietal makes this a fantastic

food wine and a wine to keep, or you can findan easy-drinking fruitier style which is easyto enjoy next to the braai,” said Christine.

All of these wines and more can be tastedand purchased at the second Cabernet FrancCarnival on Saturday 21 May from 11:00 to17:00 at Avontuur Estate.

The participating wineries are: AvontuurEstate, Cape Chamonix, CK Wines, DoolhofWine Estate, Druk-My-Niet Estate, HannayWines, Hermanuspietersfontein, KWV,Lynx Wines, Mitre’s Edge, Oldenburg Vine-yards, Ormonde Vineyards, Raats FamilyWines, Romond Wines, Whalehaven andWarwick Wines.

Carnival visitors will once again contrib-ute to the discussion by participating in thevery popular public “vote” for their favour-ite wines, which gives an interesting per-spective on the differences between expertand amateur palates.

Tickets cost R120 pp (R170 pp including aseat in one of the Challenge tutored tast-ings), which include the tastings and a tast-ing glass.V Tickets must be pre-booked at [email protected] or by phoning 021 855 3450. For more in-formation visit www.avontuurestate.co.za.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Three days ofpaternityleave a joke!I’ve had bags under my eyes for so longthat I named them. It’s no coincidence that they’re named

after my two toddlers – Joshua andAmélie.I’m writing this from the perspective of

a very involved and very tired fatherwho gets just as little sleep as his wife. This weekend I went to a well-known

shopping centre in the northern suburbswith my kids and were met by a veryadamant and somewhat sarcastic securityguard. While I was unloading screaming child

number one, the guard marched towardsme and indicated that I was not allowedto park there. He furiously pointedtowards the sign reading “Moms & Tots”.The guard reasoned that I was clearly

not a mom, despite the exaggerated bagsunder my eyes hanging so low that Ineeded a bra.I refused to move the car and flatly

ignored the man.Yet, he had a point!I’m not a mom. Sowhy on earth arethere no “Dads &Tots” parkingspaces?Little did I know

my day was aboutto go from bad toworse.Screaming child

number two had adirty nappy andmuch to mydismay I discov-ered that the baby

changing area was located in the wom-en’s rest rooms. These two issues are more than just a

personal gripe. It affects every single dad, and even

more so every single single dad!As if us poor souls don’t have enough

on our plates already. It’s quite clearly a case of gross sexual

discrimination and tests a tired father’snerves to the extreme.Someone with more energy needs to do

something about it.And don’t get me started on the differ-

ence between maternity and paternityleave in South Africa!A mother needs time to heal physically

and emotionally. In most cases she needsto breastfeed every three hours, so theyobviously need to spend a long time athome after giving birth.A father’s role during this time is

nothing to scoff at, especially if he mustget up to go to work in the morning.Three days of paternity leave is a joke.

Hear my bone-wearied chuckle. – AndréBakkes

V Regarding roadworks on Okavango be-tween Langeberg Road and PinehurstDrive. I never saw so many illiterate mo-torists in my life! Road signs clearly indi-cated “No through way. Residents only.”and another “Cul-de-sac. No outlet. DEADEND”. Why are motorists so arrogant toignore these road signs to the frustrationof Langeberg Heights residents? Every-one ended up making a U-turn at the endof Hennops Street, wasting their owntime anyway! – Anonymous

V The residents in Ruyterwacht have to al-ways report street lights that are not on,especially in Princess Elizabeth Street. There is a field that people walk acrossand it’s very dark and dangerous. We aretired of reporting it all the time, but wemust pay for services. – Anonymous

ingewy.

Voordat ek my sitplek

this was actually happening –but when I looked again hestarted to come closer to myvehicle with his clenched fistsand threatening behaviour.Immediately I felt threatenedand started to move my car outof the bay whilst franticallyhooting to get the attention ofthe petrol attendants who justlooked on.By this time I was thinking of

my son who might be steppingout soon from the shop to getback into the car. This manmight hurt him as it lookedthat he was ready to pounce mycar or us. As I hooted, andmoved off, the guy chased mewith clenched fists whilst mydaughter, who is eight yearsold, was screaming franticallyand crying in the car that “hewas coming” and calling herbrother’s name. I tried toremain calm and exited thepremises to throw him off (myson was not out of the shop yet)but he was still in pursuit ofus.At the robot, I made another

U-turn to get back on thepremises to get my son, prayingthat he might still be in theshop.I drove straight in front of

the shop and screamed for myson, who had exited the shop bynow and thankfully stood onthe side. At this time the manwas pinned down by themanagement and when myhusband called later, he wasinformed matter-of-factly thatthe man was a “troublemaker”and was taken away by thepolice. As you can well imagine, my

She may look like your aver-age teenager, but Stellenbergsongbird Julanie J is any-

thing but.In fact, the 17-year-old has al-ready enjoyed chart success withher debut album. When SpiritBreakout was released last year, itwent to number three on the SouthAfrican iTunes chart and placed atnumber 34 on their internationalchart in a matter of 24 hours. Now, just a fewmonths later, Ju-lanie is already cooking up some-thing new. Until recently, she’sbeen performing what she de-scribes as “Christian contempo-rary music”, but this year she’smade the decision to move into thesecular market.“I feel it’s a bigger platform, andthis is what I love,” she explains, referring to thenew“RnBandpop”songs she’s been working on.Julanie has been writing songssince she was a child and besidesthe 12 original tracks on SpiritBreakout and the new songs she’swriting for her upcoming FearlessHeart, due to be released in 2017,she’s also been penning hits for lo-cal and international artists. One of these is Congolese starLokua Kanza and more recentlyshe’s been working with HelmutMeijer on his new project, Calev. Her writing collaborations havemostly been a result of the re-

sponse to her debut album. “Theyliked the music and the sound ofthe album.” Others came after herperformances on television showslike SABC 3’s Expresso. While Julanie calls Spirit Break-

out a “typical worship album with

a bit of pop”, she’s planning some-thing a little more edgy when shegoes back into studio this timeround.“It will have a kind of Jessie JandBeyoncé feel,” she says, addingthat she’s already enlisted the helpof TheArrows’ PamelaDeMenezesfor Fearless Heart.Julanie will perform her first ev-er secular show at Barnyard Wil-

lowbridge on Monday 16 May inpreparation for her performancesat the GrahamstownNational Artsfestival. “I’m kind of excited forthat; I think it’s going to be a funshow.”Julanie will be performing acombination of jazz, pop, RnB andwhat she calls “fun, listenable mu-sic” with the help of sound engi-neer Duane Brown who is also theman behind Elvis Blue’s livesound, Winston Siljeur on keysand JP Crouch on drums, amongothers. She’ll also play some of the songsoff Fearless Heart for the first timeand says: “It’s a deep show, but ona fun level. It’s songs about loveand people; struggles they haveand struggles I have.”When she returns fromGrahamstown, Julanie will be pre-paring for the launch of her debutbook, Hearts Can Heal. The bookwill be published by Americanbased company E-Gen and dealswith overcoming abuse and herown journey of healing. In the meantime, music fans cancatch her at Barnyard Willow-bridge on Monday 16 May from19:30.V Tickets cost R80, R20 for children orR200 for a family of four. Two of South Africa’s top gui-tarists will join forces whenthey present The Acoustic

Guitar at Die Boer on Wednesday18 and Thursday 19 May.Loki Rothman and Albert Frost

need little introduction. The twoare known for their solo work andtheir collaborationswith thewho’swho of the South African rock andblues community.Loki’s August Rush style solo

performances have earned him aspot alongside the likes of JackParow and Die Antwoord, but he’squietly been working on his owncareer with music that earned himSAMA nominee for Best Pop Al-

bum this year. The Bellville local recently re-

leased his first song in his mothertongue, a cover of Amanda Stry-dom’s “My Kamer”, which he re-corded with Die Heuwels Fantas-ties frontman Pierre Greeff. The song is part of a series of cov-

er videos Loki has released on hissocial media platforms. In the more than two decades Al-

bert Frost spent with the BluesBroers, he cemented his name as aSouth African music legend. Now,as the next chapter of his musicaljourney begins, Albert is movingaway from his blues roots to ex-plore different sound. He recently

released his new album The WakeUp, which he has described in in-terviews as “a mixture of thingsand influences from pure rock toWest African sounds, acoustic toelectric and all stops in between.”The Acoustic Guitar will show-

case different styles from blues, rock, gypsy jazz, classical and con-temporary music.Loki andAlbert have very differ-

ent approaches. Combining Al-bert’s loops, blues playing and in-credible voice with Loki’s acousticpercussive one-man-band style isgoing to be something special.V Tickets cost R140. Call 021 979 1911 orvisit www.dieboer.com to book.

Hout Bay local Tanika Hoffman andJoaquin Del Castillo from Peruclinched the women’s andmen’s titles

respectively in the inauguralCapeTownPropresented by Quiksilver at Big Bay, on Sun-day.The first World Surf League (WSL) Quali-

fying Series QS1 000 rated events held inCape Town for six years for men and since1992 for women, the Cape Town Pro present-ed competitors with the opportunity to earnpoints on both the QS and WSL Africa re-gional rankings, along with prize purses ofR30 000 for men and R20 000 for women.Hoffman emerged triumphant in the see-

saw women’s final in which she and FayeZoetmulder (Port Elizabeth) both deliveredscores in the excellent range, taking the leadwith an 8.83 that left Zoetmulder needing an8.60 for victory.“To be a winner in my home town is just

great! I haven’t won an event in so long andto win a WSL event and earn some pointshere is really an honour and so exciting,”said Hoffman. “It was a very well surfed fi-nal. Faye had a couple of really good waveswhile I played the patience game. Then Ifound a great little runner that let me do acouple of turns and gave me an eight, andFaye didn’t find another good wave.”Zoetmulder, who – like Hoffman – has

competed extensively on theQS circuit over-seas, was proud of the standard of women’ssurfing at an event in home surf.“It was a really good finalwith Tanika. We

threw some good scores down. The waveswere pretty tricky and it was challenging sofor both be getting scores in the excellentrange was really good,” said Zoetmulder. “Iused to surf the QS overseas and to have twoevents at home now and not have to travelis amazing. The girls are all competing, weare getting more entries and I’m stoked forthe all the sponsors to be getting involved.”

Hoffman pocketed R8 000 and 1000 pointsfor her victory with Zoetmulder collectingR4000 and 750 points. Nikita Robb (East Lon-don) andTarrynChudleigh (Kommetjie) fin-ishedequal thirdafter losing toHoffmanandZoetmulder in their respective semi-finalencounters.Del Castillo led the high scoring final

against Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffrey’s Bay) fromthe outset, weaving his way through thetricky one-metre high tide waves and finish-ing his rides with flair on the sand. The 20-year-old from Punta Hermosa, just south ofLima, posted rides of 7.33 and an excellent8.67 which Lightfoot could not match, de-spite earning a pair of sevens.“I’m so happy! I’ve come a long way from

Peru on my own and I really focused on thiscompetition. This win is for my family, formy country and for Punta Hermosa whereI live,” said an ecstatic Del Castillo, whowaschaired from the edge of the water to the po-dium by a pair of local surfers in a heart-warming display of sportsmanship.“Thanks Cape Town, thanks South Africa;I’m really, really happy. Thank you.”The victory earned Castillo R12 000 and

1000 points that will see him jump nearly 100positions up the QS rankings from his rank-ing of 167th coming into the event.Lightfoot, ranked 96th before the Cape

Town Pro, was satisfied with his runner-upfinish and the 750 points that will see himrise nearly 40 places on the leader board, butwas frustrated at coming so close to a firstQS win.“I was just out of rhythm with the waves

in the final. Joaquin got that eight whichwas a turning point in the heat and he wasinmuchbetter rhythm,” saidLightfoot. “I’msatisfied with second place in a QS event –it’s a major jump on the rankings for me.V Full results of the Cape Town Pro can be foundat WorldSurfLeague.com.

NEW RECORD: YOUNG NIPPER BRAVES ICY WATERS

Swimmer makes waves

Enya showed true grit as she endured the icy ocean water during her record attempt.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

At the tender age of twelve Enyavan Niekerk etched her name inhistory onThursday 7April as the

youngest female swimmer ever to swimfromRobben Island to Blouberg Strand. What makes this

feat even more re-markable is the factthat she braved the icycold water without awetsuit.Enya’s attempt is

recognised by CapeLong Distance SwimAssociation (CLDSA).The Table View Pri-

mary School learnercompleted the 7.5kmdistance in a time ofthree hours and 14minutes.“I trained five

months for this swim-ming in the oceanwith the water beingbetween 13 and 15 de-grees,” she says.“Somedayswere tougher thanothers,

but in the end itwas allworth it. Besidesthe cold water, I also had to dodge hun-dreds of jellyfish which required focus

to navigate it safely to the end.“BrendanHiscockwho swamwithme

encouraged me and helped a lot. Thefirst half was pretty easy, but soon afterthat the tide turned against us and ittook a lot of mental toughness to com-plete the distance. I kept imagining I

was in a hot tub,”laughed Enya. Her father, Leon,

took her to Big Bayevery day for her tocomplete her 2kmswim. The goal was todo 10km every week.“I am a very proud

dad. Enya showed tre-mendous courage anda fighting spirit forfive months. In theend all the sacrificeswere worth it. It wassomething she want-ed to do and now shecan tick the box,” saidLeon.Enya is a member

of the Nippers BigBay Lifesaving Club. “I enjoy spendingtime in the sea and I will definitely dothe swim again in the future; let’s justhope the sea will be calm and make ita little bit easier,” chuckled Enya.

Saturday’sKillarney combination of the sec-ond round of the national MoPar 3-Hour Af-rican Endurance Series and the third leg ofthe Power Series sponsored by WingfieldMotors and radio partner KFM Radio, is go-ing to offer spectators almost 10 hours ofmagnificent motorsport. And with events for cars and motorcycles

and entries that include an exciting selec-tion of exotic machinery, there should besomething for everyone. The Mutlu Batteries Classic Cars provide

an excellent example. Because in addition toformer champion Keith Andrews in an AlfaGTA, Dave Kopke’s magic Mazda R100 and

Richard Quixley’s Datsun 240Z, the Lange-baan Mouton brothers have entered a 6.3-li-tre Chev de Ville V8 for Erik and a seldomseen Studebaker Silver Hawk with 5.8 litresof Chev V8 power, for Jacques.Interesting cars in the Crossley & Webb

Sports and GT events include former title-holder Peter Little whose rotary engined Lo-tus 7 is said to be the quickest 7 in Africa, whileMikeBeachyHeadwill be at thewheelof a Porsche 917 replica. However they are hardly likely to bother

drivers like themeteoric Dawie Joubert (Lo-

tus Exige), or Francis Carruthers (JunoSS3), at the head of the field. The big V8 Masters promises to be a close

one with multiple former champion MarcelAngel and Fabio Tafani, the winner of themost recent round, both having to comefrom behind after missing an earlier event,British driver Stephen Young may be hardpressed to retain his championship lead. His task is not going to bemade any easier

by the presence of hard driving former dou-ble South African rally champion Enzo Ku-un, who is due make his main circuit debut

on Saturday. The Midas Clubman shootout promises to

be another close one as Danie van Niekerk(BMW 325), takes on Alex Johnson (AudiQuattro), Clint Rennard (VWGolf) and stockcar ace Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta).Other races on the Power Series pro-

gramme are going to feature Kent HomesFine Cars, the Bold Marine GTi Challengeand Formula Libre single seaters. The 3-Hour field is then due to be sent

away at 17:30 with a finish under lights inthe dark. This event has drawn a star studded entry

from all corners of the country, with Killar-ney based Nick Adcock and Simon Murrayin their French Ligier JS49 out in front.
