It is expected that only 36% of Cleveland students will graduate from High School. This is not surprising when you learn that the average freshman at East Tech reads at a 4th to 5th grade level. Reading is a fundamental building block of learning, but because of budget limitations, the school does not have any form of remedial education leaving students with little options and often frustrated.

In order to meet the individual needs of our students, we have developed a creative partnership that includes East Tech, Lighthouse Inc., and Sylvan Learning.

INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENTS

Each student receives multiple tests to evaluate learning style, grade level, and study skills. These tests allow us to start where the student’s level so that we can build on it.

INDIVIDUAL LESSONS !

After the student is assessed, a individualized lesson plan is designed to help build the students skills toward grade level performance. Study skills and habits will also be developed for lifelong learning.

ONE ON ONE ATTENTION !

Each student will receive one on one attention with a trained tutor. Our volunteer tutors receive world class training and support on site. And a tutoring specialist is on site at all times to ensure the tutor and students have the support they need.

AMBITIOUS RESULTS !

In the end, our goal is to move each student ahead two grade levels each year. That means that if we get a student that is at 4th grade level, they can progress to catch up by their senior year. This means that students that would have been at risk to drop out, can now have a fighting chance to go to college, and is expected to graduate on time. This is a significant challenge, that we are meeting head on.

One of the biggest challenges facing the young

people of Cleveland’s Central community is the

quality of educational support and resources. The Public school system is stretched to it’s limits as the

needs of students often reaches outside of the normal school responsibilities. Often teachers and

staff take on the role of counselor, social worker,

conflict manager, and body guard. The many

distractions and concerns can create an environment

that is less than ideal for

learning. By the time students reach High

School, they are often significantly behind the

expected grade level. With so many kids facing

constant concerns about food, shelter, or clothes, it is easy to understand that they might have some

bigger issues on their mind other than algebra.

“In order to truly help our students, a tutoring program needs to be designed around their needs with one on one attention.”
