TUTOR IN TOUCH
April 2012
Reminder to All Tutors: LVR assesses learners each year using standardized tools mandated by the State of New York. Annual testing has be-gun and will take place from April-June. The Office has sent postcards to learners asking them to call us to schedule their test. Please encourage your learner to come in before June. Note: All learners are REQUIRED to come in for annual testing between April and June, in order to remain eligible for our programs The results will help: measure the effectiveness and efficiency of LVR’s programs; gauge our learners’ progress; and identify areas that have improved as well as those with room for further advancement. We have information on pages 4 through 9 that explains what each test evaluates. We have also included informa-tion you can use to help your learner prepare for the TABE or the BEST Plus Test. If you have any questions about testing please contact Mel-lissa or Jennifer at 585-473-3030.
LVR Citizenship Class During the months of June, July and August, Karen Barbato is available to work with learners or learners and their tutors and help them in the naturalization process. These students should be permanent residents, have lived in the country for 5 or more years (or close to 5 years) and be able to speak, read and write some English. Karen can be flexible with meeting times and will work with individuals or small groups as needed. She has conducted citizenship classes for LVR as well as sessions at the Fairport Library. She would also be glad to meet with any tutors who are working with students preparing for citizenship as she has helpful materials and online sites to share. If you have any questions or want to schedule time with Karen, you can email her at [email protected] .

Dear Tutor: Throughout the year, as staff and outreach callers speak with tutors, the issue of in-home tutoring arises. Tutors sometimes will question the policy of tutoring in public places as they have developed a strong personal relation-ship with their learner and feel that tutoring in their home or the learner’s home may be more convenient. While I understand the reason for the question, we must remind all tutors and learners of the following: It is the policy of Literacy Volunteers of Rochester that ALL tutoring take place in a PUBLIC place that is mutu-ally agreed to by the learner and the tutor. (If tutoring is taking place in a home, the tutoring pair will be asked to move to a public place. If they do not move to a pub-lic place then the pair will ultimately be dropped from the program.) While we certainly understand that there are many reasons to change the location of tutoring and that either party may suggest a change in tutoring location, please be advised that we do not support, condone, or encourage our services to be provided anywhere but in a public place. The reason for this is simply for everyone’s safety and security – LVR learner, LVR volunteer, and LVR. In addition to the safety and security of your match we are responsible for all matches - more than 200 each week. There are many issues that can arise in any relationship. Adding the issue of home tutoring creates legal and logistical issues which have the potential to impact hundreds of people who are served by LVR each year. Our volunteers are informed of our policy during training and our learners are informed during intake and testing, as well as periodically in messages like this. We thank all of you for all that you do to support the mission of Literacy Volunteers in your role as volunteer. Our staff and adminis-trative volunteers are working hard each day to provide you with the resources to make yours a successful match. If you are experiencing difficulty related to your tutoring location or time, please contact the office so we can assist. Thank you, Robert Mahar Executive Director Literacy Volunteers of Rochester
LVR Policy Tutoring in Public Places
Dear Tutors We have been hearing reports of learners losing money in online GED Testing Scams. These websites promise a di-ploma or GED certification after completion of online course work or testing. Please remind your learner that you cannot take your GED Test online, and any website prom-ising this service is a scam. The only way to take your GED is to register through an Official GED testing center and take the test in person at that location. Many fraudulent websites and “online high schools” offer online degrees and GED testing for a fee. The degrees they offer are not legitimate and will not be accepted by colleges or employers. The GED Testing Service and the American Council on Education are filing a lawsuit to shut these web-sites down, but for the moment these fraudulent websites are still operating. Please take a moment and talk with your learner about online GED testing. Remind them: 1) Do not pay anyone for online GED testing or an online
diploma. 2) Do not try to take the GED online. 3) The GED test must be taken in-person at an Official
GED testing center. 4) You cannot take the GED online and anyone offering
these services is lying to you and trying to steal your money.
Together we can raise awareness about these dishonest practices and make sure that there are no more learners who fall victim these dishonest websites. Thank you for your concern, Literacy Volunteers of Rochester

Mary Sue Schaefer Fund
Mary Sue Shaefer was an LVR volunteer until 1990. The Mary Sue Shaefer Fund was established in her honor to help underwrite the cost of tickets for learners and tutors to attend local cultural and recreational events. The Fund provides a maximum combined reimbursement of $35 for the tutor and learner. Interested tutors should contact Mellissa or Jennifer at least 24 hours before tickets are needed to see if funds are available. Preference is given to those who have not previously received sponsorship from this Fund. Learners who attend the event are expected to write a short article that will be published in the next LitBits. Receipts should be sub-mitted to our offices after the event to receive reimbursement.
