WelcomeGilwell Reunion is a great opportunity for so many things, not least to get involved in such a wide range of activities and events, to get inspired through the many workshops and to have opportunities to put the national team on the spot - and to do all this whilst we get together for some fun and fellowship of our own.

Reunion is also chance for you to you shape the future of Scouting by engaging with the wide range of national leaders attending, either formally through the many programmed events or informally, as they wander around the site. Don’t be afraid to stop them and chat.

We are particularly delighted to give a warm welcome to Reunion newbies including Chief Scout, Bear Grylls as well as those returning for the umpteenth time!

As always, I look forward to seeing you over the weekend and saying a very personal ‘thank you’ for making Scouting so successful.

Using the programmeThroughout the weekend there will be lots of opportunities for you to meet new people, try different activities and be inspired. Some events will be running all weekend; others have specific time slots.

Make sure you are familiar with this programme so you don’t miss out on what’s going on. It is split into five broad areas:

StallsJoin the hustle bustle on The Training Ground to obtain information and resources for your group.

WorkshopsLocated in the CIC, attend a workshop to gather information about topics of interest.

Practical skills Visit The Orchard to develop your own skills in a range of outdoor pursuits and other activities.

ActivitiesHave fun and finding inspiration for your programme by trying some of Gilwell Park’s on-site activities alongside a variety of externally provided activities.

Marketplace Peruse and buy resources from a range of Scouting and non-Scouting exhibitors. Located in The Lid on Saturday and on the Training Ground on Sunday.

Special Event: Drinks Reception Sat 15.00

There will be an opportunity to meet and share a drink with the UK Chief Commissioner, Wayne Bulpitt and other members of the UK leadership team. This is the perfect opportunity to come along and find out what they do, and to ask them questions related to all areas of Scouting.

Special Event: Scouts’ Own Sun 14.30

Led by Fiona Weaver, bring the weekend to an end in time-honoured fashion by gathering under the Gilwell Oak for a period of fellowship and reflection. This will be followed by the Annual Meeting of the 1st Gilwell Park Scout Group, which is an opportunity for you to hear about what’s been happening in Scouting and at Gilwell over the last year.

Sumo Wrestling Sat 10:00–14:30: Training Ground

Participants have to get into sumo costumes and then belly bounce each other out of the fighting circle. The person who does this the best out of 3 wins!

Airball Racer Sun 10:00–14:00: Training Ground

Two players have to compete against each other to pass their ball from one jet of air to another to get them into the baskets at the end. The first player to transport all of their balls is the winner!

Giant Connect 4 and Jenga Sun 10.00–14.00: Training Ground

Two of your favourite childhood games but giant size! Have you still got the skills to be Connect 4 and Jenga champion?

Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Sun 10:00–14:00: Training Ground

A chance to be competitive and show off your shooting prowess. No bullets or loud bangs involved, just lasers. No pigeons are hurt in the making of this activity.

Handball Sat 10.00–15.00

Inspired by the box that rocked at London 2012? Come and have a go at everyone’s new favourite Olympic sport.

Assault Course Sat 10:00–14:30: Mallinson’s

Make your way over, under and through our inflatable assault course, testing your skills and agility along the way.

Bouncy Boxing Sat 10:00–14:30: Training Ground

Why not practice your skills ready for the next Commonwealth Games. Participants have to box each other on an inflatable ring while wearing giant foam boxing gloves.

Mini Golf Sat 10:00–14:30: Mallinson’s

Whether you think of yourself as a golfing professional or a complete novice, you’re sure to enjoy a round of mini golf.

Stalls: Training GroundHave a chat with our exhibitors to learn more and get inspired in areas as diverse as scuba diving and first aid! A variety of stalls will be open on the Training Ground on Saturday and Sunday; simply bring along a bag, notepad, pen and your natural enthusiasm so you can pick up materials and jot down ideas.

The 2nd Gilwell Park SAS brings 20 new crafts that have been tried and tested at Wintercamp, Fundays and Gilwell 24, offering Leaders the chance to make all the crafts which can be used in Section meetings.

A youth-led organisation which is the National Youth Council of the UK. The BYC supports young people to have a voice and influence change locally, nationally and internationally and supports young people to campaign on the issues they care about.

Arts Award inspires young people to grow their arts and leadership talents: it’s creative, valuable and accessible. Find out how you can use Art Award to recognise achievement at all age ranges from Beavers to Scout Network and how it fits with a wide range of activity badges as well as the Creative Challenge badge. Learn and have fun using encaustic art for making cards, bookmarks and picture transfer to cotton and silk materials.

The unit joins us to promote the place where Scouting began and offer the opportunity to make friendship badges.

Create and walk a Labyrinth Sun 10.00–12.30: Open Air Chapel

In our modern, busy lives we need to find ways to slow down, to be still, to reflect, to give thanks and to engage in spiritual reflection. Walking a labyrinth, a single path with twists and turns leading you to the centre, can help us to find that space. A labyrinth will be created and facilitation will be available to help you walk the labyrinth as a means of reflection. If you are interested in helping to create the labyrinth, please join us at 10.00, otherwise come and walk the labyrinth between 10.30 and 12.30.

Eastbourne District Scout First Aid Team (EDSFAT): Automated External Defibrillator workshop

This workshop will explain the need for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Scouting and the community give an overview of how and why they work, and give you an opportunity to practice using an AED in a scenario. The International Guild of Knot Tyers will demonstrate knot tying and rope work. The stand will deliver group teaching sessions and programme ideas.

Shark DesignsShark Designs specialise in demonstrating the illusive art of tool sharpening using Japanese whetstone, leather strops and stones. They also demonstrate the many forms of fire lighting such as solar fire lighting and flint & steel. There are products available to buy at the stand.

General informationEvent staffWhen they’re on duty all Reunion staff will wear a distinctive green scarf with a Gilwell axe and log design on the back. If you need anything please ask them and they will be happy to help.

Fire and emergency proceduresOpen fires are only allowed in altar fires, placed a safe distance away from tents. In the event of a fire, alert a member of staff who is responsible for calling emergency services and alerting nearby guests.

When you check in at Reception you should receive a copy of the Site Emergency Procedures document: please ensure all members of your party read this information.

Indoor accommodationPlease note that residents of the Lodges have paid for exclusive use of the kitchen/catering and wash/shower room facilities. Campers are not permitted to use these facilities at any time. Toilets and shower facilities for campers are shown on the map in the centre pages of this programme.

Moving equipmentA service to transport heavy equipment will be provided over the weekend between the Branchet Field car park and the camping areas. Trolleys are also available on request.

VehiclesEvery opportunity is taken to reduce the number of vehicles moving around the estate. All vehicles must be parked in the Branchet Field car park and must not be parked in any of the camping areas. Inappropriately parked vehicles will be removed.

If you are a Blue Badge holder or have difficulty getting around, please speak to a member of the Organising Team who will do their best to assist you. Disabled parking is available in Wilson Way for those with a permit. A transport service can be arranged to assist those with mobility problems.

First aidA St John Ambulance first aid team will be in attendance over the weekend, located in a classroom on the Camp Square side of The Lid. If urgent first aid assistance is required, and the casualty is unable to get here, please ask a member of staff who will radio for assistance.

Rubbish and recyclingAll rubbish on the site is recycled once collected; please do not put glass and tins into the regular rubbish as this will disrupt the recycling process. Please place cans, bottles and cardboard in the recycling bins located in the Camp Square or other blue recycling bins around the site.

Rubbish should be deposited in the nearest bin. Do not leave plastic bags on fields or next to litter bins; please use the metal wheelie bins around the site. Plastic refuse sacks are available from the Reunion Office (you should receive one upon checking in). Please ensure that your camping area is left free of litter when you depart and help keep Gilwell Park tidy.

Public Wi-Fi accessWi-Fi access is available at various points across the site, including The White House, CIC and Camp Square. To access this you will need the log-in details, available from Reception.

Entertainment venuesEntry to the entertainment venues will only be granted if you are wearing your lanyard and any under 18s must be wearing their coloured wristbands given to you when you book in.

All guests, especially those camping and returning to camping areas late at night, are asked to behave responsibly towards other guests after leaving the entertainment venues.

Changes to the programmeIf changes are made to the programme we will do our best to communicate these to you. Notices and updates will be displayed at the information points, which will be located in Camp Square, The Lid, The White House Reception, Park Café and on the Training Ground, so please check regularly.

Lost propertyAny found items and all enquiries regarding lost property should be referred to the Reunion Office.

Faith Walk and religious areasThe Faith Walk is a self-guided tour of the faith buildings of Gilwell Park. The walk starts by B-P’s caravan at the back of the Reunion Office. During the tour, please be respectful of the buildings, as they will be open throughout the weekend for those who wish to use them. For more information and directions please ask at the Reunion Office.

More events, more facilities and more adventures: 2014 has been a busy year for Scout Activity Centres.

NEW AND IMPROVED

The biggest changes this year have been at Youlbury. Not only have we built another fantastic new lodge (called Bear’s Den), but the centre now also has a new toilet and shower block (with separate adult toilets and a disabled toilet) and the activity barn has been rebuilt and now includes a classroom, bouldering wall and indoor archery range. From road resurfacing and building maintenance at Downe to new activities at Ferny Crofts and Gilwell Park, all of our centres have seen exciting improvements over the past 12 months.

EVENTS AT SCOUT ACTIVITY CENTRES

2014 has been another successful year for our events. We kicked it off in style with our biggest ever Wintercamp again running at Gilwell Park and Hawkhirst. For the first time, Fundays took place across two centres (Gilwell Park and Woodhouse Park), enabling more Beavers and Cubs to join in the fun! Once again Gilwell 24 gave thousands of Explorers plenty of

adventure. We’ve got a busy few months ahead with welcoming hundreds of Scout Network members to Woodhouse Park next weekend for Intense, JOTA/JOTI again taking place at Gilwell Park next month and we’re getting ready to host our newest event Scarefest for the first time this November (scouts.org.uk/Scarefest).

PRACTICAL SKILLS

2014 saw the introduction of even more courses and activity badge weekends with the aim of making achieving easier and we will be offering plenty more courses across our centres in 2015. One of our main focuses for 2014 has been practical skills; not only have we got more expertise available to visitors on our centres, but we have provided resources, handy tips and advice via our website and social media. We also worked with Scout Shops Ltd to produce a range of ‘how to’ videos on topics such as fire lighting and tent pitching. Check out the resources area on our website and look out for more skills courses in our new Programme, Training and Event Guide 2015 available from our stand on The Orchard.

All this would not have been possible without a fantastic team of volunteers and staff who will also be working hard over the weekend to make everything go smoothly. When you see someone in a red Gilwell polo shirt, or wearing a green scarf, it would be great if you take a few moments to say “thanks” – without this dedicated team there would far less fun and adventure at Gilwell.

It’s been another fantastic year for Scouting with continued growth, a higher profile and some truly exceptional opportunities for young people. As we prepare for the start of another Scout year I hope we can provide you with the right balance of friendship, relaxation and inspiration and leave you energised for the year ahead as we aim for even greater success.

Welcome to Gilwell Park and to the 88th Reunion.

Once again the Reunion organisers have excelled themselves. There more than 100 activities, bases and exhibitors to seek out over the weekend and there truly is “something for everyone”. There are of course the old favourites like Harambee for Kenya and Eastbourne District Scout First Aid Team (EDSFAT) that are always popular, but also we have expanded some areas, like Scouting skills and also added new activities such as mini golf and sumo wrestling. The entertainment also promises to be exceptional with the return of The Beavers – an excellent live band – and also a variety of less energetic and quieter evening activities too.

It has also been an exceptionally busy year at Gilwell. We have welcomed many thousands of young people over the last twelve months, together with several thousand adults attending meetings, training and events in the conference facilities. Our events have been as popular as ever with Wintercamp, Fundays and Gilwell 24 all recording huge attendances.

ExpectationsIt is important to note that the Chief Scout’s presence at Reunion should be treated as a bonus not as the purpose for the event. Not necessarily every member at Reunion 2014 will get to meet the Chief Scout.

The Chief Scout may be available for a short time to have photographs taken with our members, however, will not have time for autographs, presenting awards, etc. Requests for autographs can be made via the Chief Scout’s Office.
