WOMEN ACHIEVERS

MANGOYI LED FROM THE FRONT

Halala makhosikazi,

halala!

This month marks the 55th anniversary of the women's march to the Union Buildings in 1956 to protest the extension of the carrying of passes to black women in South Africa.

Thousands of women from all over South Africa – representing all racial groups and classes – descended on Tshwane to demonstrate their resentment of this law.Hence we salute the millions of heroic South African women who engaged in the struggle both before and after 9 August 1956, to whom we owe the freedom we enjoy today.

When we say Malibongwe igama lamakhosikazi, we say so because the women of our country were found everywhere in the front ranks of those who fought for the liberation of our country and people.

They responded magnificently to the challenge thrown at the feet of the men folk by the late Lilian Ngoyi, when she said: "We don't want men who wear skirts under their trousers. If they don't want to act, let us women exchange garments with them."The sacrifices they made must serve to inspire all of us.

Together, as a nation, we must uphold the perspective that none of us is free unless the women of our country are free – free from race and gender discrimination, free from poverty and loss of human dignity, and free from fear and violence. We are convinced that we will continue to work together for the fulfilment of the dreams of the heroic women of our country.

Halala makhosikazi, halala! Wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo! Malibongwe igama lamakhosikazi!

People across South Africa will be commemorating Women's Month in various ways to salute the heroines who made 9 August

a significant date in the history of our country.
