3.Last summer I was staying with my grandparents on theirquiet farm in the country. On a warm dark July night I had afrightening experience. I was in bed reading, when I heard anunusual noise at the window. I got up, took a flashlight andlooked out of the window. I saw a large white shape movingoutside in the garden. It was like a ghost from a horror film! Iwas terrified. I screamed, dropped the flashlight and ran tomy grandparents’ room as fast as I could. I shouted loudly,“Help! Help!” We went outside to see what was going on. The scene wasreally astonishing. Bessie, my favourite cow, had broken intothe garden. She was covered with a huge white sheet whichshe had torn off the washing line. Grandpa took her back tothe cowshed. I went back to my room feeling a bit silly butextremely relieved at the same time. The next morning we saw that Bessie had done a lot of dam-age in the garden. She had walked over the flower-beds andeaten the vegetables. My grandparents were very angry.

4.Last year, the Dodds went to Spain on holiday. One sunnySaturday morning, William and Marjorie, with their twoyoung children, went for a picnic on a lonely beach. Theylocked their car and left it on the nearest road. The childrenhad a lovely time, swimming and building sandcastles. Atsunset, when they wanted to go home, William couldn’t findthe key of their car. He realized that it had dropped out of histrouser pocket, and was now buried in the sand on thebeach. The whole family searched for it, but they couldn’tfind it. They walked three miles in the dark to the nearestbus stop. They waited for half an hour for the bus. They gotto the hotel at midnight. The children were very tired. Thenext morning William telephoned a garage to go and collectthe car.

5bLast autumn Rowan spent a week at a big hotel in London. Itwas one of those modern hotels where every room looks thesame. His room was 311 on the third floor. One night, he got back to the hotel quite late. He walked to hisroom - or what he thought was his room. When he opened thedoor he saw an astonishing scene. A man was pointing a gunat a woman sitting in an armchair, and the woman was say-ing in a frightened voice> “Please don’t shoot me!” He turned round, ran down the stairs, and found the nightporter in the hall. “Quick,” he cried, “someone is being mur-dered in my room.” The porter came back with him, butwhen they opened the door of 311 the room was empty. Theporter looked at him strangely, and said> “I think, sir, you’dbetter go to bed,” and left. Rowan was too surprised toprotest, so he went to bed. The next morning he made some enquiries, and the explana-tion was really very simple. He had gone to room 411 on thefloor above, where a famous actor and his wife were staying. When he burst into their room last night, they were justrehearsing a scene from their new play. When he told themthat it was him who had burst into their room, they laughedand gave him a ticket to see the play on the opening night.
