A few less prime cattle forward this week with farmers busy on hay and silage. Prices continue to firm with strong demand across the board but especially the butchers’ types. Top price of the day was for a 619kg Limousin x steer from Messrs. R.H. & C.D. Care of St. Buryan making 221p/kg and £1,368, with their other Limousin x steer selling at 219p/kg, both to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Premium heifer was 206p/kg for Messrs. A.R. & B. & A. Hosking of St. Martin with a 537kg Limousin x purchased by J.V. CULL COWS & BULLS

Auctioneer – Andrew Body

Another good entry of cull cows met a continued fine trade especially for well-covered beef cows. Dearest at 148p/kg was a British Blue x from Mr. N. Doble of St. Agnes purchased by David Ellis of Lelant; with half a dozen further Hereford, Charolais, British Blue and Limousin x cows all 140p/kg+. Top money came for two South Devon x cows in from Gwealavellan Partners of Gwithian to £1,182 for an 850kg cow going to David King of Exeter; and 855kg cow making £1,086 to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. Friesians this week were mainly straight out of the parlour types which affected their averages but still selling well to 116p/kg for Messrs. E.J. Pengelly & Sons of Porthpean and bought by Dawn West Devon. A Swedish Red & White x in for Mr. A.J.H. Lawry of Kenwyn realised 117p/kg to Mark Davey of Okehampton. A Limousin cull bull in for Penny Lobb of St. Columb achieved 129p/kg to David Ellis.

STORE CATTLE

Auctioneers – Andrew Body & Patrick Dennis

Another fine entry for the time of year with the majority being 1½ to 2yo cattle which sold extremely well with plenty of demand around the ring. An entry of 36 strong cattle from Messrs. C.L. Hichens & Sons of Pendeen led the day with four 21 month old British Blue x steers making £980 apiece; their Blue heifers also standing top at £970 for a 22 month old pair, and Charolais x £960. Early 2019-born Limousins from Messrs. P.C. & K.M. Jenkin of Cury sold to £955 for a nice pair of steers with single heifer £880. A dozen 13 month old named-sire Herefords from Mr. T.G. Hawke of Colan saw their best steer trio hit £895 with heifer pairs to £755, with Devon heifers also to £755 for 14 month old Devon crosses for Mr. J.R. Julyan of Tresillian whose three steers made £780.

Another impressive calf trade but insufficient numbers available to satisfy buyer requirements. Top at £350 were two British Blue x month-old bulls from Messrs. J.H. & S.M. Dark & Sons of Mullion, Helston and Messrs. R.G. Keast & Son of Allet. Leading heifer a month-old Limousin x for J.C. & F.C. Tripconey Ltd of Black Rock at £215. Half a dozen April-born stirks from Messrs. A.D. & J.A. Bray of St. Martin topped at £465 for three British Blue x males, with all stirks averaging £446.
