Music Instruction 2017-18

About the ProgramWaynflete Enrichment Program’s Music Instruction provides students in grades 2 through 12 and community adults with individual or small group instrumental and vocal lessons on campus. Our music instructors are professional musicians with degrees in music education or performance and a passion for music.

How to Register for a LessonContact music instructors directly to schedule a lesson time.Instructors will provide paperwork to finalize the agreement. Registration information is also available in the Enrichment section of the School website.

Gloria Bonnin | Voice [email protected] Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Gloria has had an extensive career both as a musical theater performer and teacher. With a degree in vocal performance from the Boston Conservatory, she has been active in the Portland area theater community for many years, both performing and directing. As a teacher, she maintains a full-time voice studio and also runs theater camps at Waynflete’s Flyers Camp.

Nell Britton | Piano [email protected]

Nell Britton, a Master’s student in piano performance at the University of Southern Maine, has taught piano privately for over eight years. She studied piano performance at Ithica College and has won numerous music scholarships and awards, including the Bay Chamber Concert Young Stars of Maine competition and the Friends of Kotzschmar Organ Scholarship. She currently holds a graduate assistantship, accompanying and assistant conducting the University Chorale and Chamber Singers.

Denise Calkins | Piano [email protected] Tuesdays and Thursdays

With a degree in music from the University of Southern Maine, Denise has 20 years experience teaching, performing, accompanying, and directing music in the Greater Portland Area. In addition to teaching private lessons at Waynflete, Denise accompanies the School’s choirs and vocal soloists. Denise enjoys working with a wide range of private students.

Katy Cavanaugh | Voice [email protected]

Having studied Musical Theater at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Katy pursued a successful career on Broadway. She is a member of Screen Actors Guild, Actors Equity, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Since relocating to Maine, she has been actively engaged in Waynflete’s musical theater program and enjoys her work as a private voice teacher.

Dale Churchill | Piano [email protected] Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Dale received a Bachelor of Music degree with a minor in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts Boston and taught in the Boston area before relocating to Maine. He has had an extensive career as a pianist, director, and teacher. He teaches at Waynflete, the Portland Conservatory of Music, and at his private studio.

Marc Chillemi | Trumpet, Drums, Brass, Trombone [email protected]

Marc graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition and recently completed a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern Maine’s School of Music. He has more than two decades of experience as a professional musician. Currently, Marc teaches private trumpet instruction throughout the Greater Portland Area as well as trumpet and drumming at Waynflete. In addition, Marc performs around New England with several jazz groups.

Mike Dank | Drums, Rhythm Section, Rock Band [email protected]

Mike Dank’s extensive musical career inspires his work with students. He has spent more than 35 years studying, performing on the road, and teaching. Mike taught drums at Waynflete from 1988-1992. He took a break to concentrate on his own music, traveling the country and recording. He returned to Waynflete in 2002 with fresh insight and devotion to his teaching.

Lauren Hastings Genova | Violin [email protected]

Lauren Hastings Genova holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music in violin performance and a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from Boston University. She also attended The Royal College of Music in London, England. Prior to university, she attended Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, MA and the New England Conservatory’s Preparatory School. Lauren is a member of the Portland-based Amarantos String Quartet and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. She also regularly performs with other bands in the Portland music scene. It is the richness and variety of these influences that inspire her approach to both teaching and performance.

Robin Jellis | Cello [email protected]

Robin Jellis, a graduate of University of Southern Maine, has performed cello in Maine for more than 15 years. She has played with the Bangor Symphony and is currently a member of the Maine State and Portland Ballet Orchestras. She toured Europe in 2014 and collaborates often with other Maine recording artists and poets. A registered Suzuki teacher, she received her teacher training at the Suzuki Institutes of Ithaca College and Hartt School of Music. Robin is on the faculty at the Portland Conservatory of Music, 317 Main Street Community Music Center in Yarmouth, and Waynflete.

Carter Logan | Banjo, Guitar, Dobro, Ukulele [email protected] Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays

After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Mary Washington College in Virginia, Carter went on to become a veteran of the acoustic music scene in New England. He is a founding member of Jerks of Grass, a high-energy bluegrass quartet based in Portland. Carter works with a range of students at both Waynflete and 317 Main Street Community Music Center in Yarmouth.

Scott Ogden | Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano [email protected]

Scott graduated from University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance and a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies. He is a Maine native who has been teaching saxophone and jazz improvisation for more than 15 years. He performs and records across New England, and is a member of the Portland-based band The Fogcutters. In addition to Waynflete, he teaches both general and instrumental music at Southport Central School.

Gregoíre Pearce | Guitar [email protected]

Gregoíre is a North American guitarist, composer, teacher and music editor who specializes in creating art that marries flamenco, classical, jazz, R&B, rock, and Afro-Cuban music. He has taught privately and at a host of institutions such as UNLV, UCONN, Pomfret School, Rectory School, and TheFretBuzz.com. Since moving to Portland in 2013 he has focused on teaching, studying, and writing music, all of which led to the 2015 release of a flamenco-world fusion record called Pluviophile.
