Professor Gennrioh's anthology of .songs of tht Troubadours, Trouv6res, Minne- and Meistersingers is a valued contribution to the study of medieval music. It is the first collection which gives, in an easily accessible foran, a representative selection of the mono- phonic isecular composition of the Middle Ages. The musical material is presented in a clear, attractive format, using con- ventio, ial modern notation, suitable for study or perfoTrmance.

Out of 273 extant Troubador songs, 15 have been selected, including such famous pieces as Reis glorios (Guiraut de Borniehl), Kalenda Maya (Raimbaut de Vaqueiras), and the ,anonymnous A l'entrada del tens clar. Most of the known Provengal compose,rs are represented, each with one song. (Of some of these composers there are extant a dozen or nmore works, of others onily one or two.) A selection of 30 Trouv'ere compositions, out of a repertoire of ca. 1700, is made on the same basis. In this group Adam de la Halle, on,e of the most celebrated of the northen song writers, is repre- sented by four works, of which t(hree are polyphonic.

The third group of 32 songs from the German repertoire allots to the mast f amous Minnesingers, Friedrich von

Husen, Walther von der Vogelweide, Neidhart von Reuent'hal, wveral songs eaoh; also included are exponents of the later German Lied, Oswald von Wolk- mnstein and Michel Behaim, and the

Meistersinger Hans Sachs. Most of *hese compositions have ap-

peared in print previously, but in widely separated and, for th mos-t part, not easily aocessible sourxes. The edition includes an adequate his-

torical introduction, by Professor Genn- rich, and a minimum set of critical notes, givinig bibliography and sources. Only in the notes, where the nonspeoialist is not apt to see it, is there mention, of the central problem of the medieval monophonic song, the rhythm. Since this is a factor which directly affects anyone who istudies or sings these pieoes, it might have been well had the introduc- tion in part been devoted to a summary- discussion of this problem, instead of including the biograpihical details ('all of which 'are available in 'standard works). A piedagogical edition should not at- tempt to shield te casual student or performner from the hypothetical nature of the rhythmic transcriptions, nor im- pose on him the results of one or the other theory, without informing him of the situation.
