ETHICAL FORESTRYHIGHEST PEDIGREE TIMBER is used in the construction of Trivselhus by Esh buildings. Swedish slow-grown softwood is the best that money can buy. The relatively slow growth produces straighter, stronger and longer-lasting wood than that available from faster-growing trees. As a result it is highly sought after. Södra, the largest forestry cooperative in Sweden, supplies timber products worldwide.

TRIVSELHUS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Södra – an economic association with a membership base of 51,000 forest owners in southern Sweden.

Members own more than half of the privately owned forest in the region. Since its beginning the Södra forest industry group members have demonstrated a wholehearted commitment to responsible commercial forestry and an active consideration for natural and cultural values and social issues.

Swedish grown wood is already used routinely for roof trusses in UK buildings.

REAL LIFE BENEFITS

In December 2011, the Dunkerley family bought a 4 bedroom home on the Grange Development by Esh Construction in County Durham. The efficient Trivselhus Climate Shield system and the use of an air source heat pump with underfloor heating and solar photovoltaic panels offset energy bills in the house by 50% in the first 12 months.

Government payments for the use of green technology and energy efficiency then erased electricity bills. Christina Dunkerley said: “We loved the design of the house and with children to watch over, the open-plan layout was just what we were looking for. Our electricity bills are now non-existent.”

The Climate Shield in a Trivselhus by Esh building provides excellent thermal efficiency with lifetime savings in energy costs. It has been honed to perfection to operate in the extremes of the Swedish climate - conditions rare in the UK. Building regulations in Sweden demand that families and businesses are able to minimise their use of energy, so our buildings are guaranteed to meet and often exceed all current UK building regulations.

are first agreed and signed off by the client. The building is then manufactured in highly controlled factory conditions. Each section of the building is made up of several layers, integrating insulation at the outset. Windows and doors and conduits for electrical services are built in at the factory, along with any other bespoke requests, which ensures precision fitting to maintain the airtight shell. The building sections are meticulously coded before delivery to the site. Simple and straightforward on-site construction keeps costs down and brings workplace safety benefits.

STATUTORY REGULATIONS

The Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM criteria and revised UK Building Regulations are demanding gradually higher levels of energy efficiency in the construction and day-to-day running of buildings. This is a trend that is set to continue. It is challenging many of the construction processes, forcing developers and architects to seek

more cost-effective ways to comply with regulations and meet clients’ needs. The Trivselhus Climate Shield provides a high-performance, thermally efficient building envelope that can achieve compliance with existing legislation and the proposed building Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard (FEES) as well as achieving excellent scores against the Code for Sustainable Homes criteria.

The airtight, thermally efficient Climate Shield creates a temperature controlled building interior with exceptionally low space-heating requirements. The Trivselhus system also provides an ideal platform for the addition of further eco-friendly technologies. For example, underfloor heating from air source heat pumps with mechanical heat recovery ventilation systems.
