My sisters and brothers in

faith,

Autumn is almost here! I

know for all you summer

people this is not good news

but for those of us who thrive

in the fall season – well, we

are ready to ‘thrive’! Life is

like that isn’t it? What

pleases one person does not

make another person happy

and struggles ensue. Life is

also seasonal. Here in

Alberta we see and feel the

changing seasons. The

freshness of budding trees in

Spring, to the heat of

Summer, followed by the

glorious colours and chill of

Autumn, and finally the cold

white crispness of Winter.

God’s design and creativity

are all around us in a pattern

that unfolds new life through

to the end of life, and then it

all begins again. The

journey of that life is filled

with seasons and changes.

We are never static, our lives

are always changing and

transitioning from one

‘normal’ to a new ‘normal’

and on it goes. The irony is

most of us do not like change

or transition. We like things

the way they are - or we do

not like them that way, but do

not want to have to go through

change to get somewhere new!

Any kind of change stretches

us and causes levels of

discomfort – even good

change! If we would be

honest, change elicits

emotions of fear in us because

we know how it is now, but

we do not know how it will

be! The unknown brings fear.

It is true that change can bring

us excitement, anticipation,

joy and hope but it is the

‘getting there’ that is hard on

us. It is also true that as life

changes we need time to

grieve what no longer is, even

as we embrace what can be!

What a journey God has given

to us as His people! Thanks

be to God that we never walk

that journey alone!

As a part of daily prayers for

our family (15 grandkids have

me on my knees often), our

youth, our young adults

heading off to school and new

ventures, and our faith family

of Trinity, I have been

overwhelmed by all the

changes happening and all the

uncertainty of what lies ahead

for all of us. In my new role

as Lead Pastor I have felt the

weight of leadership in a

whole new way and am

learning the full meaning of

St. Paul’s words, “pray

without ceasing”. Upon

waking my heart and

mind simply resume the

prayers I was uttering

when I fell asleep. I am

so grateful to my Father

in heaven for this hotline

which keeps me sane and

functioning. I am also

finding myself repeating

words of Scripture in my

head all day long. These

words are my source of

strength and help. For

weeks now Psalm 23 has

been moving through my

mind over and over,

almost without ceasing. I

want to share it with you

as an anchor for all of us

as we step out in faith,

into a new season and a

time of ongoing change

and transition.

“The Lord is my

Shepherd, I shall not

want”. Christ has us in

His care. He is the Good

Shepherd who is leading

us and when needed will

carry us in arms of

goodness and grace.

‘Want’ in this psalm is a

‘not done’ verb tense.

This reminds us that our

future needs are also

being met by our prodigal

God who is there before

us and who knows all that

is coming.

Continued from page 1

“He makes me lie down

in green pastures;

he leads me beside still

waters; he restores my

soul.” God will give us

rest in this time of

unknowns, rest that

equips us to move

forward when we stall

out or get faint. God will

provide ‘still’ waters

when we feel like the

rapids are rushing around

us. God ‘restores’,

makes strong our souls.

“Even though I walk

through the darkest

valley, I fear no evil; for

you are with me; your

rod and your staff – they

comfort me.” The

darkness of the unknown

is daunting. David was

in the Valley of Elah

with Goliath and knew

the size of the giant

before him. One small

shepherd boy with a few

small stones facing a

giant too big to fight.

Trinity is in a time when

what lies before feels

gigantic, the task too big.

Yet David declares, “I

fear no evil”. We, too,

can declare the same

words. Why? Because

just like David, “you are

with me; your rod and

your staff – they comfort

me”. We have been

blessed with the promise

of Christ, “Lo, I am with

you always, even to the

close of the age.”

(Matthew 28:20) We

have God’s Law (rod)

and God’s Gospel (staff)

with us in the Bible, a

living Word to guide us

and lead us forward. Let

us dig deeply into God’s

Word in study and in

seeking the Spirit’s

leading together. Oh,

and remember the giant

fell because he was too

big to miss!

“You prepare a table

before me in the

presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head

with oil; my cup

overflows.” We are fed

and nourished at the

table of the Lord. We

receive Christ’s

forgiveness so that when

we disagree (and we

will) and we struggle on

the journey, we can

know His forgiveness

which enables us both to

forgive, and to seek

forgiveness, so we can

move forward as family

in Christ. The anointing

of oil reminds us that we

have been claimed and

called - we are Christ’s

and we are to make

Christ known. Our cups

indeed overflow with the

spiritual gifts God has

poured into each of us.

Together Trinity has

every gift needed to

faithfully make Christ

known in this time and

place, and beyond.

“Surely goodness and

mercy shall follow me all

the days of my life, and I

shall dwell in the house

of the Lord forever.” -

The English word

‘follow’ here does not do

credit to the Hebrew word

‘radaph’. Radaph means

to chase, pursue, to rush

and attend to. It is the

passionate pursuit of

God’s goodness and

mercy waiting to rush to

our aid when needed. Not

as a puppy dog follows

behind, but more like a

celestial stallion racing us

to the finish line – to life

with God forever! An

image to increase faith.

As we continue the

journey set before us it is

my fervent prayer that we

will do so with eyes on

Jesus. I pray that by the

power of the Holy Spirit

we will have ‘faith over

fear’ each step of the way.

Remember the value of

perspective – Saul

thought the giant too big

to fight. David thought

the giant too big to miss!

May we know the

passionate ‘radaph’ of our

God who indeed has plans

for Trinity Brooks! May

the blessing of the Lord

be upon you this autumn

season of transition,

grieving what is past and

embracing what is yet to

come.

Paul’s Letter to Titus

September 15 – October 6 at 9 am

“The God Who Never Lies” or

“Christians in a ‘Cretan’ Culture.

Join in as we study of the Book of Titus. Titus is a

very short letter from Paul found in the New

Testament. Titus is a Greek Christian and trusted Co-

worker with Paul. Paul sends Titus to Crete to help

sort out things. In Greek ‘Kretizo’ means, to play the

Cretan, i.e. ‘lie’. The Christians in Crete were living

in a very corrupt culture and Titus comes to help

straighten things out and remind them of the “God

who never lies”. Titus’ task is to ‘teach sound

doctrine’ and ‘maintain good deeds’. As you study

this brief letter to Titus consider life today as a

Christian living in a culture filled with lies. How is

truth shared? Found? Expressed? How much value

do we put on ‘sound doctrine’? How attentive are we

to ‘maintaining good deeds’?

Introducing Jordan Chappell!

The Board of Education has asked Jordan to

prayerfully consider using her many gifts to serve

as our Children’s Ministry Facilitator for the

coming year and she has said YES! Jordan has

served in our music ministry for several years and

will continue to do so. She is a Library Technician

and works at the Brooks Public library. Jordan has

a passionate love of reading, women’s football,

Children’s crafts, the Stampeders and . . . well why

don’t you introduce yourself to her and find out

more.

Jordan will work with our Sunday School teachers

and our families to encourage fun, consistent

learning and growing in God’s Word. She is

hoping to develop some family fun opportunities

over the year and will be looking after schedules,

communication and the resource room. If you have

any ideas/suggestions you would like to share with

her – please do!

We welcome Jordan to this role and look forward to

working with her to better serve our families in

growing in faith and relationship in Jesus Christ,

our Living Hope!

Clergy Response to

Worship Surveys

First we want to thank

each of you who took

the time to fill in your

worship survey (it was

back a year or two) but

that is how long it takes

to go through all the

steps of tabulating,

sharing results with the

appropriate committees,

and now sharing some of

what we have done to

respond to things shared

on the surveys. We were

affirmed to have so

many of you mark off

positive responses

regarding our worship

here at Trinity. We also

took close note of the

areas where people had

concerns or listed

constructive criticism

and ideas for

implementation. Some

of the responses

identified strong

personal preferences –

positive and negative.

The reality is that we are

a congregation of people

who gather each Sunday

representing every

decade, different cultures

and backgrounds,

lifelong believers, newer

to the faith believers and

seekers, each one

coming with their

current and always

changing needs on their

journey of faith and life.

What this means is that

while each person in

worship is valuable,

precious and important,

there is no possible way

each one gathered will

get exactly what they

want each Sunday. We

are a family and we seek

to find the way to be a

functional one where

there is always going to

have to be some give

and take.

So how have we

responded to the surveys

and your comments?

Most of our people are

very content with our

music at Trinity. On

either side however there

were strong desires for

music that is either

traditional or even more

modern. Weekly we

work to create worship

with music that reflects

our blended gathering.

We seek to include

newer and older music,

teach new hymns and

share favourites, always

needing to bear in mind

the musicians serving

that week and the themes

of the day. We put out a

music survey asking

favourite hymns and

then used those hymns in

worship.

Our people for the most

part enjoy the style of

worship at Trinity.

There were a few strong

requests to return the

full LBW liturgy even as

there were a few to

remove our Hymnals

altogether. We are using

a more relaxed “liturgy”

(which simply means

‘order’ to a service) but

also look for

opportunities to use the

traditional liturgy for

those who miss it and

would enjoy having it

now and again. We use

the screens for worship

for many reasons but

also keep our hymnals

as there is a wealth of

music and resource in

them. Our Confirmands

donated a new Song

Book of favourite more

recent songs and hymns

as well. There is always

an order to our worship

service, but it can vary

and it often does.

Videos and screen usage

is well received by most

but there are a few who

do not enjoy it. We

make use of videos as

they work to enhance,

enrich, challenge, or

give us a visual that re-

enforces the day’s

message. We try not to

overuse this media but

do find that it is very

effective with our

younger members and

we know a picture can

be worth a thousand

words. It is a means we

have to share God’s

Word and we seek to use

it with faithfulness and

with discernment.

We have sought to invite

and include people who

would like to write or

lead the Prayers of the

People in worship and

continue to put it out

there for people to come

forward and let us know

if you would like to

serve.

This year we worked to

incorporate more “Series

Sermons”. This was

suggested by several in

the worship surveys.

We have done this in the

past on topics like the

Ten Commandments,

The Creed and always

during Advent and Lent.

This year we did one in

the Spring, “Will the

Real Jesus please Stand

Up!”. We will be doing

one this fall beginning in

Oct/Nov on the Gospel

of Mark, “On Your

Mark . . .” and we will

continue to look for

meaningful, timely

series topics to do in the

future. Let us know if

you have ideas for

topics.

Trinity continues to

follow a Lectionary for

our readings each

Sunday. In this way we

work through most of

the Bible over three

years. When doing a

Sermon Series we see if

the readings fit and if any

do we keep them, and if

they don’t we work with

what fits that Sunday. A

lectionary holds the

preacher to account and

often gives us readings to

work with that are not as

easy but still very

needed. Many enjoy the

lectionary, some do not.

It is not mandated by

Scripture but is useful

and does connect us to

other churches around the

world in hearing the same

Scriptures on a Sunday.

Several surveys asked for

more clear information

about our mission

ministries at Trinity and

we have responded with

prayer cards for our

missionaries, updated

Bulletin Boards, and a

monthly Mission Minute

in worship to keep us all

informed.

Issues raised regarding

the physical side of

worship such as air

conditioning in the

Sanctuary, softer pews,

better lighting, sound

issues are not in our area

of Pastoral expertise or

decision making so those

were shared with other

parts of our Council.

In closing please know

that we reviewed and

prayed over each survey

returned. Thank you for

the thoughtful sharing

that you did. Thank you

for the many affirmations

you blessed us with!

Thank you all for your

honesty. Thank you most

of all for ideas,

suggestions and

constructive criticism

given. Worship is the

place each week where

we connect as a faith

family and where we all

gather to receive from

God and to praise and

worship God. As your

Pastors, we labour with

prayer, trepidation, and

always with the Biblical

mandate that Worship is

focused on God and we

are to be faithful to that in

every way. Please

forgive us when in our

human frailty we do not

meet your expectations of

us and pray for us as we

desire to be found faithful

to the Word of God and to

God in all we do.

In Christian love,

Pastors Maggie & John

P.S. We thought it might

be helpful to give a brief

explanation of our

worship style here at

Trinity and a bit about

why we do what we do in

our Sunday worship time.

Some of you know all of

this but some may not and

so explanation is always

good. Come talk with

either of us if you have

any questions about this.

Trinity has an unique

style of worship,

creatively incorporating a

liturgy each week. Our

goal for each Worship

service at Trinity is that

God’s Word will be

proclaimed with a proper

distinction and application

of God’s Law and God’s

Gospel. People gathered

for worship will have an

opportunity for

Confession each Sunday

and will hear clear words

of forgiveness shared with

them. Twice a month

Trinity offers the precious

gift of Holy Communion,

Christ’s Body and Blood,

in, with and under the

bread and wine. God’s

Word will usually be

shared through an Old

Testament Reading, a

New Testament Reading

and a Gospel Reading. A

Psalm may also be shared.

A Sermon/Message will

be given each week using

the day’s Scripture

readings. Music will be

led by a variety of teams

each with their own style,

but always with the

primary goal of aiding us

in raising our voices in

praise of our God!

Lutheran Christians have a

long history of excellence

in music and Trinity is

blessed now, and always

has been, by committed,

gifted musicians. We seek

to honour their gifts, their

time commitments and

their creativity. Children

are valued in our midst

and Children’s Story is a

special time to share

God’s Word with them.

Prayer is a precious

privilege God gives His

children and happens in

each worship along with

the Lord’s Prayer. We

include the Apostle’s

Creed most Sundays as

our Profession of Faith.

This creed has been used

by Christians from age to

age and all around the

world. It clearly states

what we believe about our

God – Father, Son and

Holy Spirit. Our service

concludes with a

Benediction, a good

word/blessing to take out

into the world where we

live out our faith in daily

life. We conclude each

worship with the words,

“Thanks be to God!”

Office Reply to

Worship Surveys Dear Worship

Committee Members:

Thank you for the list of

Suggestions from the

results of the

Congregational Survey.

We have implemented

solutions for some of the

suggestions and they are

listed below. We realize

that there are differing

opinions and appreciate

that people took the time

to make their

suggestions known. The

only suggestion that we

chose not to implement

was putting the scripture

lesson and gospel back

into the bulletin. We felt

it is not a good use of

resources as most people

have access to a Bible to

look up these scriptures

whether it is the Bibles

in the Pews, their own

Bible or use of the

computer to look these

verses up. As stated

below we have set up a

weekly email that sends

out the scripture for

Sunday as well as

announcements and

prayer concerns.

Here is how we

addressed the rest of the

suggestions:

Re: I am aware of our

missionaries and how to

pray for them.

We want to

commend the Missions

Ministry on their efforts

to update the congregation on Mission

Outreach opportunities.

The Mission Minutes

during worship are very

informative and

appreciated.

Information given to the

office by the various

mission teams and the

Missions Ministry will

be put in the weekly

bulletin or the monthly

newsletter as we receive

it.

Re: The church

maintains a good

balance in using both

bulletins and projection

screens for the order of

service.

We are working

towards less paper and

have simplified our

bulletin in order to do

just that. We have cut

our paper consumption

in half and have been

using digital media

instead of printing

postcards and posters to

invite people to our

events. To that end we

now have Instagram

accounts for the church

and the youth group, we

are using Facebook and

our church website, the

Remind App is being

used for Confirmation

and Youth

communication and we

have a new weekly

email that seeks to keep

the congregation

informed. We realize

that not all of our members are on social

media or use computers,

so we use postcard

invitations and posters

sparingly.

It was suggested people

would like to know

ahead of time who is

giving the message. We

are now putting who is

giving the message in

the bulletin under

“Servant’s for the Lord’s

Day”.

We appreciate the effort

of the Worship

Committee in allowing

opinions to be heard and

seeking to improve the

life of our congregation.

We will continue to look

at ways to be good

stewards of the gifts that

God provides us.

Blessings

Kari Bolen – on behalf

of the office staff

FYI You have an opportunity

for service to our church

family at TLC.

We would welcome

anyone interested in the

preparation of coffee after

Sunday worship or the

clean-up, to come into the

Kitchen to become

familiar with the routine.

There is a sign-up sheet in

the Kitchen. We’ve been

enjoying treats with our

after worship coffee and

welcome contributions if

you feel lead to do so

GOT QUESTIONS??

Many people have questions about the

Bible, or Faith, or Jesus or Other

Religious Beliefs but do not always feel

comfortable asking their questions out

loud or in a group. It was suggested a

while back that we should start a

Question Box where people could put

their questions (with their name or

without). Our Pastors would then have

opportunity to do some study and choose

a question or two to answer in the Trinity

Times each month.

There is now a “GOT QUESTIONS?”

box on the table below the main Bulletin

Board. Please consider what you might

have on your mind and would like to ask

and put in a question or two. Watch for

the answers in coming Trinity Times

editions.

Jesus said, “ask, seek and knock”. Let us

each share our questions that we may all

grow in grace and wisdom.

married!

WHAT: Time spent in God’s Word to “Fireproof” your

relationship. Fireproofing is about preparation,

prevention and readiness for when the “fire” comes!

WHY: Marriage Matters! Family is Forever!

FACILITATORS: Pastors Maggie & John Theiss, fellow

travelers on the journey of marriage & life!

WHAT WILL IT LOOK LIKE?

We will gather for coffee and pie. We will gather to dig into God’s

Word. We will do some listening, some sharing (if comfortable)

and some praying.

We come admitting marriage is hard work and we need help so that

God’s design for us can be all that He intended!

We come ready to fight for our families and ready to receive help

to do that.

RESOURCES USED: Fireproof the Movie, Fireproof Your

Marriage, The Love Dare, The Five Love Languages and The Holy

Bible.

EXPECTATIONS:

Learning, growing, laughter, good dessert, and hope in the midst of

a respecting, caring group of fellow travelers on the journey of

faith and love.

All are invited to come – the introvert and the extrovert, the

struggling and the seasoned, God designed this thing called

marriage and God, the author has much to deepen the richness.

The Question to ask yourselves is not why should we commit and

come, but why wouldn’t we?

Transition / Visioning Update

The Transition Team has been formed and consists

of Mark Altwasser, Rhea Lynne Anderson, Kari

Bolen, Dennis Dockray, Leona Ferguson, Jayden

Harvie and Sarah Summach. We have been directed

by Council to: “Lead Trinity Lutheran Church in

visioning and ultimately calling a pastor to Trinity

Lutheran Church. The visioning process shall be led

and facilitated by an outside consultant. This

process will involve seeking input from the

congregation and most importantly seeking God’s

will and guidance. The visioning process shall

clarify pastoral roles, who we are and who is God

calling us to be.”

We have been working with Pastor Eric Hulstrand

of Moving Forward Coaching to formulate a short

survey that will be distributed to the congregation on

Sunday September 8. This survey is an opportunity

for you to tell Pastor Eric who Trinity is. This

survey is confidential in that only Pastor Eric will

see the results. The survey is being given out in

preparation for the Transition / Visioning

Weekend scheduled for October 25-27, 2019. On

this weekend Pastor Eric will visit Trinity in person

and conduct interviews as well as use the survey

results to present observations and

recommendations to the Staff, Transition Team and

the Congregation.

We are excited to see what God has planned for

Trinity and we ask for your continued prayers for

Pastors John & Maggie, the Transition Team,

Church Council and for each and every member of

our church family as we journey together through

this time of seeking God’s will for Trinity.

Blessings

Update on Refugee Process

for John Wat’s family

John Wat is originally from South Sudan and lived

as a refugee in Ethiopia before coming to Canada 20

years ago. He dreamed of becoming a doctor and

returning to his Home to help his people but due to

his need to support family financially, he was never

able to fulfill his dream. He is an incredibly

respected and responsible member of the Canadian

Sudanese community. As well, he supports his

mother and her caregivers in Ethiopia.

John supported his nephew Pal to finish school and

achieve a Master’s degree in Khartoum, Sudan.

Five children were orphaned when their father, Pal,

was killed in the Sudan, and Pal’s wife died in

Ethiopia. Their grandmother, John’s sister, took

over their care and then was tragically killed in

Addis. So much trauma and loss! The two oldest

children are being cared for (with John’s financial

assistance) by relatives in Uganda. John has moved

the youngest three to Nairobi, Kenya to facilitate the

Refugee Status process. They are now registered as

refugees, they are reportedly much safer and

happier, and we are proceeding to find out the

quickest and easiest way to move them to Calgary to

be with John and his family.

The children are Nyamal Pal Kuek (age 15),

Tethloch Pal Kuek (9), and Kuek Pal (7) are

presently being cared for by John’s niece Nyaruot

(21) and Johns’ youngest brother Gatkhor (21) in

Nairobi. The children have started school there, and

John has been financing their accommodation,

living expenses and school fees.

I will continue to update the congregation and advise

as to how exactly we can help with this situation.

Please continue to pray for the whole family, for

God to open up a way to expedite their move to

Canada, for the safety and welfare of the children,

and for John and his wife Pasqual, as they are totally

overwhelmed by the entire situation. He cherishes

the prayers and support of the people of Trinity, and

is so thankful for a loving church family.
