Fall 2015 Study away is an integral part of a college experience, and Trinity College encourages students to take advantage of a summer, semester, or full-year program, offering immersive living and learning experiences in some of the world’s great cities. Trinity’s study-away programs offer an array of strong academic opportunities appropriate for students from all academic disciplines. These programs have been designed by Trinity College faculty to integrate and enhance the College curriculum at the home campus. With academic courses, intensive language programs, internships, and field-study opportunities, students can engage in life-changing learning experiences in and out of the classroom while exploring the universalities and differences of urban environments. In addition to Trinity’s own programs, students can select from more than 90 approved study-away programs in the United States and throughout the world. The Office of Study Away (OSA) assists students interested in studying away throughout the entire study-away process. We also assist visiting students interested in applying to a Trinity-administered program. From study-away advising, information sessions, and predeparture orientation to reentry information, the OSA is available to students before, during, and after they study away. We aim to provide all of the tools students need for a successful academic and personal experience in a new environment. Study away is an integral part of a college experience, and Trinity College encourages students to take advantage of a summer, semester, or full-year program, offering immersive living and learning experiences in some of the world’s great cities.

BARCELONA, SPAINThis program offers students at all language levels the opportunity to explore a fully bilingual – and multicultural – city. Trinity in Barcelona offers three language tracks to accommodate participants with begin-ner, intermediate, and advanced Spanish-language abilities. Students study history, politics, art, Hispanic studies, and urban cultural issues while improving language fluency. Courses are taught in English and Spanish, and students take the Trinity core course, “Barcelona: In Search of Daily Life,” and the all remaining courses at a local university. Students with advanced language skills have the opportunity to engage in an internship with a local NGO. Students have the choice of living in a student residence, shared apartment, or homestay with a Spanish family. Excursions are included throughout the semester and summer programs.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (in association with IFSA-Butler University)

This program provides students with both intermediate and advanced Spanish- language abilities a variety of strong academic, cultural, and co-curricular opportunities. Students take the Trinity core course, “Buenos Aires: The Urban Experience, Human Rights, and Cultural Production”; engage in an internship or independent study with a local NGO; and complete their remaining courses at a local university. Students live with Argentine homestay families for complete cultural immersion. Excursions are included throughout the semester.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA (in association with ISA)

South Africa’s unique history, diverse population, and varied cultures make this an extraordinary opportunity to participate and learn in a thought- provoking and stimulating environment. All students take the Trinity core course, “Imagining South Africa,” designed to provide a framework for understanding postapartheid South Africa. Students also engage in an internship with a local NGO, which provides another perspective on the culture and society. Remaining courses are taken at a top South African university. Students live in apartments with other American students. Excursions are included throughout the semester.

PARIS, FRANCEThe program offers courses in French, history, politics, sociology, urban studies, English, culture, and the arts in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Students study at the Trinity site, located in Saint Germain-des-Prés. Classes are offered in English and French (there is no language requirement) in the humanities and social sciences. Students on the program use the city as their classroom, going on regular academic excursions to museums, historical sites, and cultural attractions. They learn through their experience of the city as well as through academic examination of its institutions, art, architecture, culture, and literature. Students may choose to live in an apartment with other students on the program or with a French homestay family. Qualified students also may take classes at a host university.

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDADTrinity in Trinidad focuses on the academic exploration of Caribbean civilization in two countries. It offers an immersion experience in and out of the classroom in one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic and unique societies, the two-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The Caribbean civilization has a long history and is a vitally important geographical area, politically, socially, and culturally. Students explore the diverse, ecologically unique, multiethnic heritage of the region through its politics, human rights, arts, history, economy, religion, food, music, and environment. Close collaborations with cultural and political leaders, scholars, scientists, and artists allow students to do internships and independent studies in almost any field, gaining valuable academic and career experience. Classes are offered in all disciplines, including the arts, humanities, social sciences, engineering, and sciences. Each semester includes a study tour to Costa Rica, where students and faculty study the Hispanic Caribbean.

ROME, ITALYTrinity College’s Rome Campus, established in 1970, offers an outstanding educational opportunity in one of the world’s great cities, where treasures and ruins of several magnificent civilizations are stage to a vibrant, modern capital with a cosmopolitan culture. Students enjoy excellent professors, a broad liberal arts curriculum, stimulating fieldwork in Rome, a variety of internship opportunities, and faculty-led academic excursions to Venice, Florence, and/or Naples/Pompeii/Capri. Students also may choose to participate in cultural exchanges and join local sports teams for greater integration into the community. The program is based in Central Rome on the Aventine Hill, and students live on the campus or in a nearby hotel. Approximately 50 percent of participating students are from Trinity, and the remainder are from colleges and universities across the United States.

SHANGHAI, CHINATrinity in Shanghai is affiliated with the prestigious Fudan University through its School of Social Development and Public Policy. All students take a Trinity core course, “Shanghai: The Chinese Metropolis in Comparative Perspective.” Classes are offered in areas such as history, sociology, economics, international studies, Asian studies, and urban studies. All students also study Mandarin Chinese at the appropriate level (no previous study of Chinese is required). Students have the opportunity to do an internship for credit, as well as participate in campus activities, in order to immerse themselves in local culture. Students live in an international residence hall near the university. Excursions are included throughout the semester.

VIENNA, AUSTRIALocated in one of Europe’s historical, cultural, intellectual, and geopolitical centers, Trinity in Vienna is open to students with little or no knowledge of German. All students take the Trinity core course, “Thought and Culture of Vienna,” and take additional courses in English at the University of Vienna in international studies, political science, history, American studies, English, women and gender studies, human rights, and philosophy. Students who are already proficient in German may choose from a full range of course offerings at the university. Students live in international student residence halls in central Vienna. Excursions to Salzburg, Budapest, and Prague are included.

NEW YORK CITY, USAThe Trinity/La MaMa Performing Arts Semester is rooted in artistic exploration, experimental learning, and academic investigation. New York City is the “laboratory” for our studies and artistic explorations. Each week is dedicated to a specific theme that connects all of the conceptions and artistic approaches at play. The unique opportunities include arts practice classes, an academic seminar, a nonprofit arts internship, weekly attendance at diverse performances, master classes, field studies, and a culminating final project. Students attend several performances per week as part of their curriculum. Students reside at the La MaMa student residence at the 92nd Street Y, a short metro ride to the East Village.
