Travelling

I will explain how this activity contributes to my personal and professional development in three different contexts:

1. Basics: Growing opportunities present in every trip.

2. Travelling by myself.

3. Travelling with family and friends.

1. Basics

• In some way, travelling feels similar to be a child again because during a trip I recover the ability to feel amazed.

• During a trip everything seems new and different from my daily routine.

• When I am abroad, I have the chance to get in touch with new cultures, flavors, ethics, languages, places, people and religions.

1. Basics

As a consequence of these new experiences, I developed and improved the following skills:

Empower creativity. Embrace change. Respect and appreciate other values and

viewpoints. Look at life with a different perspective. Reinforce social sensitivity.

1. BasicsPersonal Experience

Spain, 2011: I spent 1 month in Toledo studying constitutional law. During the course, I met young Latin American colleagues. Their experiences and viewpoints made me realize that I needed to find a balance between my personal and professional life. For this reason, I decided to quit my job at a law firm and venture myself into business law.

Cuba, 2012: My family and I visited La Havana during a week. We were surprised because the city seemed frozen in time. We found poverty all over the city. This experience reinforced my social sensitivity. It also made me appreciate the value of opportunities and resources and think about how can I use them to help others.

2. Travelling by myselfI am certain that travelling by myself was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It helped me to develop and improve the following skills:

Social and communication skills: Since I was alone, I had the necessity to interact with other people and make new friends.

Discover personality traits: Because I was in a different social context, I discovered features about my personality I was not aware of.

Automomy and self confidence: I demonstrated that I can handle new different situations and challenges on my own.

Resources management: I learned to manage efficiently my money and time.

Risk management: I had to take care of my self taking into consideration all kind of risks related to any of my decisions.

2. Travelling by myselfPersonal Experience

Spain, 2011: During the month I spend studying in Toledo, I met Sindy, a 24 year-old Chilean girl. During my stay in Toledo, I learned how to organize my time and manage my money because I had to study but I also wanted to do some tourism. Sindy and I became close friends and we decided to visit Paris together. We got lost many times in Paris so I had to learn how to keep myself calm and communicate with locals in order to get directions because Sindy only speaks Spanish.

3. Travelling with family and friends

Travelling with family and friends is a quite different experience. However, it helped me to develop and improve different skills:

Reinforce personal relationships: For me, vacations are the best opportunity to spend some quality time together.

Improve team work skills: I learned that travelling as a group requires the collaboration and integration of all the members of the crew.

Conflicts management: Each member of the group has different interests. For this reason, it is important to communicate and reach an agreement.

Leadership: Without a leader, a group will fail in the attempt to organize its activities and reach its objectives. The leader also helps balance interests and overcome possible problems.

France, 2011: During a family trip around Europe my little sister realized that her visa has expired and we had plans to travel for two additional weeks. The whole family was so concerned that we had difficulties to find a solution. After a couple of hours of arguing, I suggested to contact the Peruvian Consul in France in order to find possible solutions. The Peruvian Consul recommended us to contact the French immigration authorities in order to obtain a temporary visa for my little sister. Finally, after we all collaborate in different aspects, she obtained a temporary visa and we ended our trip without problems.
