• The transition elements are those d-block elements that form stable ions

in which the d-set is only partially filled

T.M. atoms lose electrons from 4s when they are ionised…

• Cu: [Ar] 3d104s1…. but Cu2+ ion is [Ar]3d9

• Mn: [Ar] 3d54s2 …. but Mn2+ ion is [Ar]3d5

You either like it or love it …but either way it contains lots of B12…and therefore Cobalt

This is the hexaaquocopper(II) ion…which is blue….

..because it absorbs the red end of the spectrum….

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper…hence the green patina…

This ion is green..and produced by treating the hexaaquo ion with conc. Hydrochloric acid….this is a ligand exchange reaction…

The next few slides show reactions with ammonia: deprotonation first then the slower ligand exchange reaction
