Greetings! And welcome to the Winter Edition of our bi-monthly magazine. We have a broad range of articles in this edition, but I want to focus for a moment on the idea of ‘partnership’. We have many wonderful partnerships that enhance our ministry at HumeRidge and help us fulfil our mission.

We partner with Scripture Union to provide chaplaincy in schools and work among the

young people in our community. We partner with Churches of Christ Care and with experienced practitioners like Graham Storey to run Youth Turn and the associated parent support program.

We partner with Watoto (Uganda) to go and serve needy children; or with ICCM in the Philippines to enhance a Bible College. There is mutual benefit from these occasional overseas mission trips. And we partner with missionaries around the world through Churches of Christ Global Mission Partners.

We partner with many other churches and denominations to reach Toowoomba, believing that we are ‘better together’ and can have greater impact as we love one another and cooperate in joint ventures.

Recently, we have seen further developments in our association with international aid agency HAGAR, and have become official partners in their work. We are listed alongside well known corporations and ministries as ‘partners’ in their annual report.

Note that we have two significant HAGAR events in July – a huge State of Origin fund-raiser on July 6, and a weekend with program coordinator Sue Hanna and her team on July 22-24. Don’t miss them!

The apostle Paul was thankful to God for those with whom he shared a ‘partnership in the gospel’ (Phil 1:4-5). He saw mutual encouragement or benefit in these partnerships (Romans 1:12-13). We, too, are blessed to have both local and world-wide partners in our ministry and mission!

During June we will share in a 3 week sermon series based on some thoughts from Max Lucado’s book, Cast of Characters. Through this series we will focus on three Biblical characters who are just like us; ‘common people in the hands of an uncommon God’’ We find our stories in theirs. We find our hope where they found theirs. In the midst of them all... intertwined in their lives, hovering over them all... is the hero of it all: God. Maker. Shaper. Rescuer of sinking hearts.

Do you believe that God can use you to accomplish extraordinary things? If you have any doubts, take a look at the heroes in the Bible. You’ll find people like Mary, Peter, David,

common people in the hands of an

Joseph, Nicodemus, and Job - ordinary people who allowed God to work through them in amazing ways. People like Mephibosheth… Mephibo what, Mephibo who you ask?

Cast of Characters contains 22 character studies, profiling both men and women from the Old and New Testaments; people who loved and were loved by God. These heroes—from King David to Joseph, Moses to the Samaritan Woman, Abigail to Lazarus—may be known for their achievements, but as we examine the life of just three of these characters we will

explore how God accomplished more through their failures than their successes. Through the three weeks we see how these ancient biblical characters are relevant to modern concerns among people such as doubt, rejection, insignificance, purpose, humility, suffering, risk, and consequences.

Common people; stories of people marked by scandal, stumbling, imperfection; people just like us. God found a place for them, a purpose for them in His grand plan of life. Likewise He has a place and a purpose for us, for we too are “common people in the hands of an uncommon God’’.

The American poetess, Fanny Crosby wrote more than 8,000 hymns and didn’t start writing hymns until

she was in her mid-forties. However, she did live until she was 95! This achievement is even more incredible when we consider that she was blind from the age of six weeks when she had an eye infection and someone suggested a hot poultice should be applied to her eyes and the damage done was irreparable. She is reported to have said several times that she was glad she was blind. “That is because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Saviour.” she said.

As a child, Fanny memorized whole sections of the Bible, including most of the Pentateuch, the four Gospels,

all of Proverbs and vast portions of other books. This fountainhead of knowledge of the Bible and her strong faith greatly influence her hymns which are simplistic in form and wording but carry the message right through to the heart. Though she died in 1915, many of her hymns are still sung today including:

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine,O what a foretaste of glory divine;Heir of salvation, purchase of God,Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Other hymns still sung include “To God Be the Glory”, “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross”, “I Am Thine, O Lord”, “He Hideth My Soul”. “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” and ”Rescue the Perishing”.

Hear more about everyday people being used by God to touch lives through the writing of hymns by attending Hymn Singing; 1.30pm 2nd Wednesday of each month.

Turn it down - A music lover’s least favourite words. And here I am, the church music guy, suggesting we turn it down.

But I’m not talking about Sunday services. I’m talking about the volume of noise in our lives. Ask anyone how things are going and more than likely the reply will be, “Busy”. The blare of busyness bares down on us almost every moment of the day, not only with the increase in work, family and social demands but thanks to incredible advancements in technology such as iPods, facebook, twitter, skype, email, mobile phones, SMS, television channel choice and gaming consoles.

Our brains are being constantly stimulated to dangerous levels by our modern lifestyle. For example, “multitasking”, where multiple technological devices are being used at once, is a phenomenon affecting many of the tech savvy, particularly the younger generations - googling an assignment topic whilst listening to the iPod, interacting with others on facebook, checking out the latest Youtube sensation and sending text messages all at the same time.

This continual heightened brain activity reduces our ability to experience the simple pleasures life has to offer and compels us to seek bigger, brighter, faster and louder thrills.

The world is moving at breakneck speed and the down time our body and brain desperately requires is becoming increasingly elusive. Our inability to keep up the pace to society’s trends and expectations is sadly resulting in more and more cases of depression, anxiety and addiction. The increasing financial costs of coping with these issues is staggering. The relational cost to families and society is devastating.

Yet, according to Dr Archibald Hart in his book “Thrilled To Death”, the problem is not what we’re doing that is rotting our brain, it’s what we’re not doing that’s rotting our life. We’re not having family dinner, we’re not having conversations, we’re not taking the time just to be still, we’re not taking the time to recognise where true peace and rest comes from.

If our minds and bodies aren’t coping, could it be that somewhere along the line we’ve allowed our spirit to be drowned out by the din of all the distractions dished up by the world?

So turn it down. Turn down the volume. How else will we hear the whispered words of the One who offers real peace for our lives? The One who said, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Dallas Willard, a renowned scholar and

Christian author, says the key to living a

fulfilled Christian life is to model the One

who Christianity is all about.

He says that Christians can become like Jesus

Christ by “following Christ in the overall

style of life he chose for himself” and by

“practicing the types of activities he himself

practiced in order to remain constantly at

home in the fellowship of his Father.”

It makes sense, doesn’t it? It sounds simple too – just model our lives on the life of Jesus Christ. And whilst this is easier said than done, it is nevertheless vital that we genuinely attempt to understand the way Jesus lived, learn from his example, and model this in our own lives.

The apostle Paul wrote, “Imitate God in everything you do, because you are His dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ” (Ephesians 5:1-2a NLT).

disciple by first spending time with God in prayer, devotion, and reading the Bible; and by then putting it into practice by following the example and instruction of Jesus.

BECOMING CHRIST-LIKE

The Bible instructs us to imitate Christ and thus become more Christ-like. In recent years at HumeRidge we have spoken often about the process of transformation. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed.” (Romans 12:2). The result of this ongoing process of transformation is that we become more and more like Jesus.

It is not enough to just know about Jesus. We need to become like Him. Nineteenth Century American evangelist D.L Moody put it like this: “The scriptures were not given for our information but for our transformation.”

If we have faith in Jesus Christ, and cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives by modelling the way of Jesus, “…we become more and more like him and reflect his glory more and more.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 Living Bible).

CHURH WIDE SERIES

In Term 3, through July and August, the HumeRidge Ministry Team are working together to take the whole Church through a brand new series, Learning to Live like Jesus.

In this series we are not looking at how Jesus’ performed many miracles, or why his teaching drew great crowds, or at the events surrounding his death and resurrection. Rather we want to learn how Jesus actually lived. How did he approach everyday life? What guided his decision making process? How did he treat people? What was he like in a crisis?

Eugene Petersen, drawing out the central theme of this verse, wrote; “Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behaviour from their parents.”

A child learns by seeing, experiencing and modelling the behaviour of his parents. An apprentice learns through careful attention to the craft of his master. It takes time, and requires our attention. The believer becomes a true

In our preparation we poured over various articles listing the characteristics of Christ. One author listed 19 characteristics, whilst another listed 48. We narrowed it down to just six (6) characteristics which we believed would specifically help people in our church community become more like Jesus.

This six session teaching series will include Sunday morning services, Sunday afternoon services, connect groups, youth and children’s ministries. Six of our pastors and leaders will bring one message each, and write a Bible study. These will be compiled as a HumeRidge Bible Study Book, available to all attendees and connect group members for $5 each.

Here is an outline of the Series:

We have often led a church wide study series, but in the past it has usually been written by one person (like Neale Proellocks) or we have used curriculum available world wide, like The Prodigal God in 2010. This is a little different, and will involve the whole team and the whole church. Please make every effort to attend, participate, study and learn. She may appear to be nothing more than a Kiwi-country-chick, but this down-to-earth Residential Operations Manager of Hagar Cambodia is full of heart, love and gumption. Alongside a team of committed individuals, Sue attempts to lift up women and children who have come from the toughest of human conditions, and re-empower them to lead independent lives.

Sue’s contagious passion for the poor and destitute has long shaped her journey both spiritually and physically, as it has taken her all over the world sharing how God has called her to a duty that she loves. Sue’s natural public speaking abilities has served others well on many occasions, one recently being at the largest Human Trafficking event to date, the Freedom Summit in California USA - A conference on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

Having worked for World Vision for 10 years and running two homes for at-risk women in NZ, Sue found her place at Hagar Cambodia in 2005, where she now lives out Hagar’s Mission Statement in it’s fullness, to do “whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to restore a broken life”. Anyone who has met Sue would tell you that this Mission Statement is not just a statement for her; it’s a way of life.

I am not sure if Marion Owen from plantea.com intended for her information on bulbs to be interpreted like this, but I read her article on how to plant bulbs and was really encouraged about the impending Winter season.

I love the idea that bulbs are planted in the Autumn and then burst forth with the first colours of the Spring season. The glory of Tulips, Daffodils, Irises and Crocuses is such a welcome sight after the grey days of Winter.

During the short days and long evenings in Winter when we are tucked in our cosy houses eating soup and playing board games, the flower bulb is busy. It is making a good root system so that it can sustain itself through the coldest days of the season. But, the conditions need to be just right: good soil, planted

at just the right depth, lots of compost and plenty of sunlight are essentials for a bulb to grow and develop into a vibrant flowering plant come Spring.

I thought that I could take these principles and apply them to myself this Winter. I am hoping that this means that Winter can be a time of reconnecting and re-energizing for Spring.

Firstly, I am going to plant myself in some new fresh soil. I am going to be taking time to journal and ponder things that in the busyness of warmer months I have not had time to do. I have a pile of books to read and a list of things I want to study more. I want to develop deeper roots, to learn more about God and how he has worked through time and in my life. I am going to make sure I have a good strong root system so that when those dark days

BELINDA BRAY

Bulbs

Hearts

come, I am strong and still able to flower.

As for compost, I am going to rake all those good intentions that have collected around my feet and turn them into good things. I am going to start changing ‘shoulds’ for ‘it would be goods’.

Sunlight is the final aspect of a good healthy bulb. It is hard getting enough sun in Winter, but I love getting lots of the early morning sun. The clean air and time alone with my thoughts and God in the low light is great. Walking in Winter is also a great way to ensure that Spring is a time of rejoicing in Summer clothes that still fit!

I am hoping that after planting myself away for the Winter, come Spring I will be invigorated and fresh and in full flower, ready for the fun and freshness Spring brings with it.

We recently held our first Regional Toowoomba Seniors Convention after 15 years. “A Seniors Moment” took place here in our own local church and the positive response from the registrants and their cooperation was overwhelming.

With over 70 registrations, we were serving and speaking to more than 100 people each day for three days. On our first day with Friday lunch, we were privileged to host our 12 Professional Medical Team members as they prepared to leave Australia for their Watoto Uganda ministry.

We had Registrations from Victoria, A.C.T., Miles, Kilcoy, Goondiwindi, Gilgandra and Redbank and of course many from our home church. A number of other locals have

screened the outcome and want to register for next year. It is planned to serve people from our Regional Community.

There were three guest speakers dealing with the risk of senior fraud and then financial planning. It drew a very positive response, as a number of our registrants are facing these senior and retirement issues. We used Peter Best from USQ; Simon Carrie from Heritage, and the real hit John Gouldson, dealing with Financial Strategies for Stages for Life.

Our major guest presenter was David Ratten, Senior Minister from our One Community Church in Victoria. He spoke on living a life of happiness, of significance, and of love. His three messages, plus the testimony of

his new converted member Ron together with over 200 photos are available in a CD set for $10.00.

We ran our seven electives twice, which gave our seniors ample choice, able to take in four of the seven. The range of choice was well received. Electives included: Travel with Craig Mathieson and the Holy Land with Geoff Pankhurst; Pyrography with our own Barry Miller; Scrapbooking by our hardworking Convention secretary Debbie Dayet; to gardening “Going Potty with Chronicle columnist Justin Russell; and understanding your computer with our member Greg McKeon and Chris Robinson. Our “well being” class on diet and exercise was in the hands of Denise Hart.

The fun debate under John Eastwell was about seniors having access to modern communication techniques. It was very funny and informingly entertaining. John made sure the seniors came home just in front! There was an abundance of wonderful food which was enjoyed over many discussions and laughs. We pay tribute to Collette Le Dilly and Julie Baker with their band of ‘volunteer catering slaves’ and to our helpers who attended to the registrations and transport issues. Morning Tea on Sunday under Owen Mollenhauer was brilliant. We thank our Staff Team, Dale White and Brendon Walmsley who contributed musically to the class of our presentation.

We express our gratitude to our generous sponsors: Burstows Funeral Care; Palm Lake Resort; Travelscene. travel created for you; Churches of Christ CARE and our Centenary Development Foundation; with Dornbusch Partners PL and Heritage Building Society.

We are now planning next year’s regional convention. Be alert you will be one year older!

Yesterday was another exhausting yet rewarding day. We are blown away by the people - everyone holds our hands and thanks us with tears and blessings despite us giving only what we can. We sat around last evening sharing each of our highlights, and we each have amazing stories.

Our Doctors are seeing many ranges of conditions and I took some amazing photos of an operation Graham was able to perform yesterday. They are making such a difference to people’s lives. The education session the Doctors give to the staff every morning is one of the highlights for them - the staff are absorbing new knowledge like a sponge.

Teresa and Di, our OT and Physio, are having such an amazing week with the disabled babies and toddlers after such a rocky start. The Nannies are implementing the new ideas

What an amazing adventure God led our Watoto Medical Team on in March. If you haven’t heard the stories be sure to catch up with one of the team. To help you get a picture of their experience below is a snippet from “Nurse Wendy’s” 4.30am facebook page entry during their time in Watoto.

and the childrens’ day is filled with laughter and games and the new measures have helped the mobility of some by 100%. Teresa received a letter yesterday from one of the Nannies she met on Monday who expressed her love and gratitude and told that the things she had learned from the girls would change the way ‘her children’ would be looked after for the better for years to come. How wonderful is this!

Our Optometrists are having exhausting days and some of the glasses in certain vision sizes are close to running out, and we still have a week to go. They are loved and thanked over and over...

We nurses found the second day of triaging and dispensing medication to the Community people to be heartbreaking and rewarding all over again. The day didn’t seem to be quite as busy as Wednesday, but many people are telling

their friends in the villages to come and see the Doctors and we were dispensing medication until Watoto shut the window on the last of them at 5 pm. I was told a little baby was so sick sitting outside in the sun and after Wednesday’s death of a tiny baby, my heart was in my throat. This beautiful 18 month old was in the arms of her 11 year old Muslim sister, such beautiful girls, and so ill with malarial fever. We treated her for several hours before her sister could tie her to her back and walk the half hour home again. She has another 3 sisters and 2 brothers at home and got into trouble from the Watoto staff for not coming with her Mama, but it turned out mama was at home with other sick children. We gave the girl balloons and stickers to take home for her brothers and sisters... oh it brings tears to your eyes to see these beautiful people and their appreciation to God for help.

20 I

Stephen Lucas one our optometrists shares...

Between Narelle, Scott and I, we prescribed over 400 pairs of glasses, and performed eye tests or vision screenings for over 1000 people over 9 working days. This was extremely exhausting!! We are extremely grateful to everyone who donated glasses, or raised funds for us. We donated many leftover pairs of glasses and eyedrops to Watoto.

As a team we provided educational teaching sessions to the local Watoto health care workers to hopefully provide some long term knowledge which they can draw upon in providing health care to their own community on an ongoing basis.

The team visited the completed house which last year’s HumeRidge team built in Suubi village. We pray now that God will place the right family in the new house.”

As you can see despite the exhaustion and tears there were many blessings for our Medical Team as well as Watoto and their surrounding community. As a church family we praise God for the work that has been done in His name, and through His strength. To the Team we say thank you for sharing your knowledge and gifts with others and following God’s call to mission in Uganda. We are encouraged by your testimonies.
