Trail Tales By Calamity Jane

The Buzzard and the Dove By Pastor Dean Manuel

Our Beginnings By Arlene Smoot

Editor’s Note: This is a reprint of a series of articles that first appeared in the September, 2014 Trail Mix with this article appearing in Nov., 2014. These articles are being reprinted upon members’ request.

So, continuing, Indiana Trail Riders Assn. was formed after the "big" meeting took place at the Rallye Ground in the Horsemen's Camp. Edwin J. Simcox was Secretary of the state of Indiana and issued the Certificate of Incorporation for Indiana Trail Riders Association, Inc. on the 1st day of June, 1982. The first board of directors had 5 members - Jan Vinson - Bill Rumbaugh - Douglas McCormick - Leslie Simmons and Forrest H. Skinner. The post office address of the principal office of the new corporation was P.O. Box 720 Nashville, IN 47448 which was Jan Vinson's address. She was considered the resident agent of the corporation. Meetings were held at night in Nashville, IN. I worked and therefore could not attend any of these meetings. After a few years, Beverly Jones was elected president of ITRA and made a lot of changes. Bev lived in Farmland. She changed the address of the corporation to its current address. She also changed the board meetings to a weekend time and that is when I became active. The board meetings were held at various restaurants over the state. We started having annual meetings that were held at a large shelter house in Brown County State Park. That shelter house was always running over with people at those meetings. We had so many people coming to those meetings, we had to ask to see their membership card to be sure they were actually members. More next time ---- Arlene Editor’s Note: Arlene had graciously agreed to write a series of articles about the founding of ITRA.

Boy howdy, ain't it been a year so far. I thought that winter was never gonna go away and spring never show up. Made it really hard to get hosses worked, gardens planted and then tryin’ to get first cuttin' hay made was purt near impossible. Why I'd look at the weather and them rascal's said it was clear sailin' for no rain and I'd get my hay down and then it'd rain and I don't mean a mere sprinklin' but rain in near Biblical portions. And you know what???? It takes as much work to put up bad hay as it does puttin' up good hay. I'm sure hopin' the rest of the summer and the fall is a whole lot better than this here spring and first part of summer was. I'm way behind in my ridin'!

Working on our addition a few years ago I had some neat things happen. One morning I looked up and saw a Buzzard perched on top of the peak of one of the vents. Now to some that might mean ohhhh a bad thing. Buzzards for some reason reflects death. But With the Sun behind it you can hardly tell it’s a buzzard. Kind of like yes we will face death someday, but With Gods Son we have everlasting life!

The Dove,

As I was working on the lookout tower of our house a Dove on the same spot landed and had several times where the buzzard landed. It sings its song, and I am so close to it I can see its breast swell as it does its song. I take encouragement from this little bird as I work up high off the ground and think how just the previous year I was in the hospital almost dead. And how God gave me a 2nd chance to serve him. And how I must shout it from everywhere that Jesus is Lord! Even from a team of horses going through the park on Sunday Morning! So thank you Jesus for the Life you have given me, and it’s my prayer to serve you even more tomorrow! I choose the dove! After all it’s the symbol of the Holy Spirit coming down.

Matthew 3:16

After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. Peace, love, and Gods Dove to you! Pastor Dean Manuel Horseman's Camp Christian outreach 7595 Bob Allen Rd Freetown IN 47235 Facebook Hcco Park 812 345 1642

The internet is many things to many people. I, for one, really love its ability to teach and to bring you new ideas. Perhaps it may even change the way you look at the world. A case in point is that the other day I was idly leafing through Facebook and came across a post about trail riding. The author, as many do, was listing his complaints. What a shocker!!! On further reading I saw that one of their pet peeves was when they talked to horse people the trail riders usually say, I “just” trail ride, like it was something they were ashamed to admit.

Lo and behold, I saw myself right in the middle of that group. For many years since returning to horses after a youth spent contesting and showing, I placed “trail riding” third in my list of what I did with my horse. I now know that I am not alone in the way I looked at my chosen use of the horse. The Facebook author went on list his reasons that it peeved him but by then I was thinking of my own life and no longer interested in what he had to say. However, it struck me that he was right. Many of us take a twelve hundred pound animal of prey and put it in situations that it would avoid if given half a chance and then say we are “only” trail riding. The arena horses that I rode growing up were good at what they did but they were not anything close to the dead broke mare that I have today. I can’t say that I ever fell off of my arena horse but can’t count the times I’ve been dumped on the trail. With the exception of some eventing horses, riders of contests and shows are relatively safe in the saddle. So why do we say we are “only” trail riding? In my case, maybe it was admitting the youthful “fear nothing” attitude has left me and by trail riding I am somehow a lesser rider. The training is just as important for trail riding as it is for shows and contests. Trail riding is as challenging and perhaps more dangerous as anything I ever did in my youth. So thanks to the internet I realized that I will never say I “just” trail ride but will say with pride “I TRAIL RIDE”.

Anyway, that’s something to think about the next time you saddle up your twelve hundred pound animal of prey and “just” go for a trail ride.

Nose Flies at Little Missouri State Park By Nancy Brunnemer

Nose flies! I had never heard of them, ever, until I was in North Dakota this summer. We were at Little Missouri State Park near Killdeer, North Dakota. The flies go up the horse's nose and drives them crazy. It happened to two of our animals in their pens. It would have been very dangerous to go in the pen to spray them once the flies were in their nose. They were striking out and bucking and impossible to get near. I sprayed from outside the pen as best I could until it had some effect on him. Then I could go in and spray him better. After that we put Vicki's vapor rub in the nose and had no more problems.

It was the prettiest riding I have ever seen!

Buffalo Wyoming By Bob and Ginny Brittain.

Think about this… We were about 1400

miles from home, camping and riding in a

primitive camp call Hunters Trail Head. We were

up well over 8000 feet, 20 miles on the west side

of Buffalo, Wyoming. And we run into Andy and

Carolyn from Indiana!! And they are members of

Indiana Trail Riders. Look at what her sweat shirt

says in the picture. They camped right across

from us at O’Bannon last fall. Small World!
