Coins for Change is a bi-city challenge this year after Castlegar joined the drive to end home-lessness in the region.

Following the Sept. 18 event in Trail, Castlegar Coun. Deb McIntosh confirmed a similar gather-ing is planned in Castlegar the next day, though details haven't been released.

Locally, Rossland, Montrose and Trail offi-cials have commit-ted to the awareness and fundraising cam-paign that asks politi-cians, service groups, and anyone else in the area to experi-ence homelessness firsthand by sleeping under the Victoria Street Bridge.

Those participat-ing will be asked to

build shelters out of boxes, or pitch a tent and sleep outdoors in the makeshift refuge from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. and all money pledged will sup-port the Getting to Home project.

“It's not just about spending the night,” says organizer Sheila Adcock, from Career Development Services (CDS). “It's about gather-ing pledges.

“And if you can't spend the night, but really believe in this cause, then charitable donations can be dropped off.”

Liberal MP candidate Connie Denesiuk and NDP MP candidate Richard Cannings have com-mitted to the cause, the Salvation Army will provide food and beverages, and Trail businesses have donated cash or contributed gift certificates to be given out during the night.

“A lot of people are only a paycheque or two away from homelessness,” said Adcock.

“The perception is 'those' people. But the sto-ries we could tell, because against all odds, this person is standing in front of me able to ask for help, when I'd be a puddle on the floor.”

Single mothers, seniors on the verge of losing housing, youth transitioning out of foster care, brain injury clients and people struggling with mental health or drug and alcohol issues have all found housing through "The Homeless are Here if You Choose to Look" project.

FROM PAGE 1Factors like an

outstanding power bill or barriers to an an application with the Ministry of Social Development, are other ways an individ-ual may wind up on the street.

Immediate needs such as food and a safe place are first addressed, explained Adcock.

Then program facil-itators look at what is standing in the way of the person securing housing.

“They might just need a little bit of a hand up, not a hand out,” says Adcock. “And they may need to be walked through the process, so that’s what the facilitator does. We try and set them up to succeed.”

Last fall’s inaugu-ral event raised about $8,000 for Getting to Home, which is a non-profit collaboration between the Greater Trail Skills Centre and CDS.

Almost 250 people have found housing since the program launched three years ago, says Adcock, clari-fying that Getting to Home is not for every-one.

“This is where we need to be clear,” she explained.

“We are not a rental agency, we don’t just find people places to rent. This is not for anyone that needs to look for an apart-ment. It’s for people

who really need help walking through the process and setting up safety nets for them-selves.”

Often that includes an element of advo-cacy such as providing a phone or computer and help with applying for ministry assistance.

“We don’t receive advocacy funding, that’s not our man-date,” said Adcock, mentioning Advocacy Centre staff from Nelson visit Trail FAIR for matters like filing reconsideration for assistance.

“But if it’s a one off we will walk across the street to help the per-son.

“Many of the indi-viduals don’t have a

phone to call the 1-800 ministry number, so they can come here to phone or fax, there’s no issue with that.”

For information, to

donate and to sign up for the event, contact CDS at 364.1104 or visit the service’s office at 1565 Bay Avenue in downtown Trail.

Coins for Change, an awareness and fundraising campaign for the Getting to Home project, is slated for Sept. 18. Organizer Sheila Adcock from Career Development Services (left) and Trail Coun. Eleanor Gattafoni Robinson, spent the night outside during last year’s inaugural event. Committed to sleeping outdoors for a second year, the ladies and other event participants are actively seeking pledges prior to the fundraiser.

Getting to Home program benefits from campaign

FROM PAGE 1would be allowed on Forrest Drive.

Residents opposed to the busi-ness plan had their say during the public gathering. A roomful of neighbours voiced concerns about existing Warfield businesses, the current lack of parking and bylaw enforcement, increased traffic on Forrest Drive, and unknown future use of the space.

“The other thing, I think is quite important, is that I already brought up those things with council and put it in writing,” said Larose. “I think the people who showed up at the meeting are using me for a pawn. What I was applying for had noth-ing to do with bylaw enforcement. Regardless whether they passed me or not, it wasn’t going to solve those other problems.”

The Laroses maintain their shop would not have generated much traffic, as the business was consid-ered a retirement “Kootenay time” venture.

“If there are people already rac-

ing down that road (Forrest Drive), then speed bumps should already be there,” Larose added. “My business wouldn’t have changed any of that. And they were worried that if the business didn’t work out, it could end up being a service station or something. We already struck out some of those things in the rezoning application.”

Pahl acknowledged public con-cern over increased traffic spilling onto Forrest Drive, but said coun-cil is reviewing bylaws and bylaw enforcement.

“To ensure if we move forward with certain types of zoning requests we have the tools in place we require to properly enforce infractions.”

At the end of the day, Warfield is down another business, says Larose.

“Warfield doesn’t have a lot of ser-vices and just lost a bank,” he said. “It’s not everyday you get someone coming in, wanting to take a chance and improve something like that. I think the community lost out on a good thing, that’s all.”

Built it and they will come. That is the man-tra for Grace McGregor, RDKB director for Christina Lake, and the pedestrian bridge she and others hope to erect.

The bridge location would be where the old highway used to go, just a few metres away from where the Highway 3 bridge is.

“We want people to be able to go for a walk, stop at the Welcome Centre if they want, come down here, go across and they could go up to the pickle ball and the exercise area and community hall, and loop around and come back,” said McGregor from the bridge site. “A lot of people do walk and they walk over and get the mail or to the store but a lot don’t like that (Highway 3) bridge.”

McGregor said she’s been using the Highway 3 bridge since it was built in 1962 and it’s never been pleasant to walk on. “It also doesn’t have much room for wheelchairs and scooters,” she said, “and it’s dangerous for kids. It’s also dangerous for kids to cross the highway. We’ve been trying to get the Ministry of Transportation for eons trying to get either some caution lights up there or a crosswalk and we continue to work on that.”

McGregor said the ped-estrian bridge has been in the works for several years.

“When we at parks and recreation started talking about this years ago, this was John Pratt’s dream,” she said. “Even before we had a parks and rec, John was part of a commit-tee and they actually had some plans for a walking trail. His family continues to hold that dream. I too agree it would be really nice if we could do it. How are we going to do it is a big issue.”

McGregor said the

bridge would cost about $1.2 million. “Do we have that kind of money? Absolutely not. Am I going to tax for that? Absolutely not,” she said. “When the grants come down it’s all about being shovel-ready or shelf-ready. We want this to be engineered and ready so if there are grants out there we want to be ready to apply.”

McGregor reiterated that they would not raise taxes in Christina Lake to pay for the pedestrian bridge project.

Not everyone at the Lake is in favour of the project. Some of the resi-dents living on the road to the proposed bridge site do not want increase foot traffic in their neighbour-hood.

McGregor said that there are also some that would like to see the pedestrian bridge on the other side of the highway since there is no cross-walk in the area.

In order to gauge pub-lic opinion, the RDKB held an open house at Christina Lake on Aug. 20 at the community hall. There was also an online survey on the RDKB web-site.

“We wanted to have the public meeting to put it all together so we could see who would benefit, how many people are in favour, how many are dead set against it,” said McGregor.

McGregor said they are still compiling the results and expect to complete the feasibility study in October.

“I think we’ve been successful in talking to people,” she said. “We’ve had it on the website, we’ve sat down with people one on one, we’ve had people fill out forms, we had the public meet-ing. I don’t think we can do much more. That’s all part of the process. It looks really good when you apply for a grant that you’ve actually talked to your community.”

OPINION

Urban society slides into helplessnessOf all the immature,

ignorant whin-ing that came out of the recent

power failure in the Lower Mainland, one example summed up the decline of our urban culture for me.

It wasn’t the people who flooded 9-1-1 with calls demanding to know when their power would be restored, or complain-ing about their freezers. It wasn’t those on Twitter insisting BC Hydro pay for food that went bad. It was another social media moment.

With part of his com-munity without electricity for a third day, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart went to his Facebook page, which has a wide following.

There he pleaded with residents to stop phoning city hall to demand that a local big-box supermarket provide milk and eggs.

Power had been restored at the store only a few hours before, in the

dead of night, and it’s safe to assume that all stores were working flat out to restock perishables.

Where do people get the notion that city hall, or whatever all-powerful nanny state they imagine, controls grocery stores? How do they conclude that in the midst of the worst electrical grid fail-ure on record, BC Hydro is going to address their personal situation above all others?

Vancouver broadcast media weren’t much bet-ter.

Their big focus was that BC Hydro’s web-site crashed, so people couldn’t call it up on their smartphones and find out instantly when their power would be back on.

Some even questioned why wireless power meters didn’t help. Perhaps these were the same journal-ists who fed the tinfoil-hat superstition about their signals.

The facts should be

known by now. After an extremely dry spring and summer, a high wind shat-tered trees and took down more wires and poles than BC Hydro had ever coped with before. Further dam-age was done within areas that were already blacked out, leaving overtaxed technicians unable to accurately assess the full extent of it.

In Coquitlam and elsewhere, poles were down in areas too rain-saturated for heavy repair trucks to reach. Yes, there were some too-optimistic repair estimates given

out, in response to the constant screeching for instant answers.

About 15 years ago I experienced my worst power outage in the Fraser Valley. In a semi-rural area with little backup grid capacity (since great-ly improved), my family went three days without power. This was in winter, due to wind and freezing rain followed by snow and cold.

Trickles of water kept pipes from freezing, and the gas stove provided a bit of heat.

I heard no complaints about the crews strug-gling around the clock with the dangerous job of repair. Media coverage was mostly adult super-vised.

Megastorm madness isn’t an isolated case.

A couple of weeks before that, a temporary construction bump on the Lion’s Gate Bridge deck caused panic and rage.

Aggravated by a couple

of accidents on the alter-nate route, and fed by hysterical media, driv-ers of West Van luxury cars were white-knuckled. Traffic choked the region that recently declined to pay a bit more for road improvements.

In both cases, people outside Lotus Land were muttering: Welcome to our world.

This is pertinent to the federal election. Are you competent to save for your retirement with RRSPs and a tax-free sav-ings account, or do you need the government to do it for you, by force?

Are you capable of managing your own child care, or should the nanny state create a hugely sub-sidized system, which has already failed in Quebec, from coast to coast?

Are you ready for the day when the machine stops?

AnnouncementHere We Grow Again!

As a relatively new busi-ness owner in the downtown area I feel compelled to send a letter of support for Daniel Haley and his concerns in dealing with the mentally ill (Businesses asking city for help dealing with society’s vulnerable, Trail Times Aug. 28).

After reading Holly Wilson’s letter (More help needed for mentally ill, Trail Times Sept. 1) one would be left with the impression that Daniel is not supportive of the mentally ill in this town.

This could not be further from the truth. Mr. Haley has gone above and beyond in

helping many of these people by giving them food, lending them transportation, letting them use his phone etc.   I have also never met a stronger advocate for all things Trail.

His letter was merely point-ing out the difficulties some downtown businesses have in dealing with the large num-ber of mentally ill and drug addicted people wandering into our stores.

We are not all mental health professionals with the skills to deal with some of the difficult behaviors we encoun-ter daily.

We also have to worry about the safety of our staff

who are often intimidated by some of the more aggressive individuals who wander in.

Holly acknowledges that services are somewhat lack-ing when it comes to help-ing these individuals but the burden should not be placed on business owners.

Running a business is hard enough without being accused of contributing to “incidents” with the mentally ill.

Before we can deal with a problem we have to first acknowledge it and not shame business owners for express-ing their concerns.

Business owner goes above and beyond despite downtown difficulties

Last Wednesday, (Sept. 2) about 7p.m., a deer raced across the road and hit my car, near the Bombi turnoff, as I was returning to Fruitvale with a friend. I slowly drove a short distance to a wide parking spot, knowing my car was in no shape to drive any further.

As there was no cell phone service, I flagged down the first car.

My passenger stayed with my car. This kind stranger drove me to the nearest home. The RCMP was contacted, ambu-lance and my daughter-in-law.

The kind lady whose phone I used, drove me to the acci-dent scene and stayed until the RCMP arrived. We were at the scene for about one and a half

hours. The two RCMP officers, one

from Salmo and one from Trail, were sensitive, very tactful and understanding, (which also included my misplaced driver’s license).

The RCMP looked for the deer but couldn’t find it. The two ambulance attendants again, very intuitive and caring, regarding our individual needs. My daughter-in-law was very calm, extremely supportive and helpful.

Meanwhile, my misplaced wallet with my driver’s license, I was positive I had left in the stranger’s car. A friend used Facebook to track down the kind stranger.

I visited the local drugstore

in Salmo and the staff gathered around and were asked to watch out for the kind stranger.

The mystery was solved. The stranger, who is no longer a stranger, did not have my wal-let. I went to where my car had been towed and there was my wallet under the driver’s seat. There were many humble apologies to make.

This accident again reinfor-ces my belief in communities; the willingness of friends, neighbours and profession-als to help, support and work together. This was a time when my friend and I needed caring people and all involved met our needs.

Kindness and support from strangers and professionals appreciated after accident

An editorial from the Hamilton Spectator

Yes, it’s a recession. Regardless of Stephen Harper’s repeated attempts to avoid the term, it now officially applies.

But the technical name mat-ters less than what it repre-sents. Things are not pretty for too many Canadians already. Stagnant wages. Rising costs. Unemployment. Precarious employment. Threatened pen-sions. Add in yesterday’s news that up to 35,000 more oil

industry jobs will disappear in the coming months.

Harper’s reaction to all this? “Obviously, there have been challenges.” How’s that for compassion?

The Conservatives wanted this election to be about the economy. So be it.

What are they doing to improve things?

To create a climate where better jobs are being created?

Where manufacturing gets more support to regain its feet?

To diversify away from energy reliance? You can like or not like the Liberal plan to run deficits to pay for massive infra-structure deficit. You can buy or not buy Tom Mulcair’s claim he can create jobs and kill the deficit at the same time.

But we already know what we get with the Conservatives — low taxes.

And where have we gotten with that slavish mantra? If that’s all Harper has, perhaps it’s time for a change.

Recession label less important than reality

The aquatic cen-tre will be closing for renovations and repairs on September 19 for up to 11 months. The decision was made at a meet-ing of the regional recreation commis-sion today.

“It is a big gulp for the directors to

think about closing for almost a year,” said Nelson mayor Deb Kozak, who sits on the recreation commission. But she said she accepts the expertise of the com-pany recently hired to manage the project, Unitech Construction Management Ltd.

Unitech was hired recently following

the failure of a bid-ding process that produced nothing but over-budget bids. The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) decided then to switch to a model that would see the hir-ing of a single con-struction manager for the whole project but with individual sections of the job

tendered out to trade-specific companies, rather than hiring one company to do the whole project.

The work on the building includes renovations and upgrades to mechan-ical systems, electrical panels and equipment, lifeguard station, sauna, pool decks, tiles, and waterproof-ing membranes. The gym and the arena will remain open.

When Unitech was hired, the RDCK’s budget for the project was $4.8 million, with a $4.5 million borrow-ing cap. At the meet-ing,

Unitech represent-atives presented a plan that would cost $5.2 million, along with a list of cost-savings that would bring the budget down to $4.8 million. The cost-sav-ings consisted most-ly of renovations or repairs that Unitech and RDCK managers thought desirable but expendable.

Goaltender Bailey Macburnie recorded his first shutout as a Trail Smoke Eater on Saturday as the Smokies skated to a 7-0 thumping of the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League champion Selkirk College Saints.

The Smokies dropped the first game to the Saints in Castlegar on Friday, a 4-3 loss in overtime, before bouncing back for the decisive victory in the exhibition home-and-home series.

“The week before we had Kelowna and a similar type spread, but let them back in the game,” said Smoke Eater coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “We kind of dug our heels in here and kept the lead, so pretty happy.”

Seven different scor-ers tallied for a Smokies team that looked fast and balanced through-out its four lines.

Veteran defenceman Ryan Swanson netted what proved to be the winning goal, taking a pass from Rhett Wilcox and wiring it through a screen past starter Brett Huber midway through the first.

Just over two min-utes later, former Beaver Valley Nitehawk, Saints defenceman Danny Vlanich was sent off for tripping, and the Smokies would capitalize when Dexter McLeod dished to Kale Howarth in the slot and the Red Deer native’s quick shot would give the Smokies a 2-0 lead.

Trail held an 11-8 edge in shots in the per-iod and would keep the momentum going into

the second.Former Nitehawks

Spencer McLean would take a perfect pass from Ross Armour and wrist a bullet by Huber to put Trail up 3-0 at 15:54.

However, Trail would go down two men after Wilcox and Nick Halloran received minor penalties with-in 20 seconds of each other. But Trail would kill the 5-on-3 with Macburnie making sev-eral stops including a great toe save off Matt Martin alone in front, then stymied Ryan Edwards as he ripped a shot from the right circle.

“We have a lot of talent in our locker room this year,” said Macburnie. “I’m really excited for the season and I think we’ll put a lot of wins up this year . . . I definitely had a

few tests out there, and played solid, but all that matters at the end of the day is putting up points.”

Minutes later, Trail would net another power-play goal when Max Newton found Conner Brown-Maloski alone in front and CBM backhanded it over the the glove of Saints net-minder Steven Glass, who came on in relief of Huber.

With four min-utes left in the middle frame, Trail defence-man Jeremy Lucchini would find a streaking John Laurito, who flew down the right side and snapped a laser over the glove of Glass to make it 5-0 heading to the third.

Selkirk outshot Trail 16-11 in the period, but in the third, a combina-tion of speed and youth would take their toll on the older Saints players, who won’t play their first league match until Oct. 2.

The Saints would get into penalty trouble and the Smokies added two more power-play goals with Kienan Scott finishing off a beauti-ful passing play with McLean and Howarth at 7:49, and Newton tipping in a point shot from Evan MacEachern with 33 seconds to play in regulation. Trail out-shot the Saints 17-7 in the third and 39-31 in the game.

“It’s an early start for us,” said Selkirk College

coach Brent Heaven. “We’ve only been on the ice five times before this weekend. We have a month before our regu-lar season starts so we have a lot of work to do and a lot of time to do it. Some of the guys only got on the ice once or twice over the sum-mer. It’s just the way it goes when you’re work-ing all the time now, it’s a little bit different when you’re playing junior.”

The game featured most of what will be Trail’s starting line up, excluding Harlan Orr and Nii Noi Tetteh who were rested for the game, when they face off against Vernon this weekend.

The recent additions of 18-year-old Halloran, an Air Force commit, from Utah, and defence-man Cooper Sande, 18, from Minneapolis, com-pliments a deep and well-balanced forward lineup built on speed and skill, with capable and mobile defence and strong goaltending.

“Once we get into our season that’s going to be the real test,” said Deschenes. “There are some real bright spots. But now it’s a level play-ing field. Now we have our 22 guys, we have to figure out how well we can get our 22 to play, and how far we can take the group.”

Trail’s first home game goes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the Vipers.

Nitehawks were tired, they didn’t show it on Sunday in KIJHL pre-season action, beating the Spokane Braves 4-2 in their seventh-game in seven-days odyssey.

Shawn Rowe scored the win-ner on the power play at 17:15 of the second period, blast-ing a point shot by a screened Braves goal-keeper Jake Holden to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.

The Nitehawks car-ried an exaggerated lineup of about 30 players for the stretch of matches, including a number of 15-year-old prospects. While B.V. lost its first two games, the team got better as the week wore on, winning four of its last five games including a 13-1 pum-meling of Castlegar Rebels Friday and a convincing 6-2 win over Nelson Saturday.

“It’s been an inter-esting grind, differ-ent than normal, but I think very positive,” said Nitehawks coach and GM Terry Jones. “We’ve been able to get a lot of young guys some ice, we’ve been able to assess our team, our players, and now we have some difficult decisions to make and move for-ward.”

Trail’s Brad Ross opened the scoring at 17:03 of the first per-iod, taking a pass from Christian Macasso and wiring a snapshot top corner. But the Braves would reply tying the game midway through the period when Paxton Malone

finished a 2-on-1 with Josh Fisher.

Spokane would take a 2-1 lead on a pretty play from Fisher as he faked Hawks’ goalie Brandon Wells to the ice, then beat him on the wrap around

But the Hawks tied it before the period was out on a great effort from Aiden Browell. The Nitehawks forward would bust down the left side, go around the defenceman and curl behind the net, then feed Sam Swanson on the doorstep who put in his own rebound to tie it at two with 4:09 to play in the period. Nitehawks returnee Jace Weegar would make it 4-2 with 8:12 to play on a nice setup from Dillan Heppler and Braden Fuller to complete the scoring.

“I think over the seven games, you’ve seen more and more of our team iden-tity come out in the games,” said Jones. “A more hard-working brand, good tempo, good pace, rolling the lines. We haven’t real-ly done any systems work, but you can see they are picking up on the cues we’re talk-ing about during the pre-games and things like that. I mean the season starts Friday, and we have one more test (tonight) to make the final evaluation of our roster.”

The Hawks will play their final exhib-ition match tonight against Creston at 7 p.m. at the B.V. Arena in Fruitvale. The home opener goes on Saturday against the Kelowna Chiefs with the puck drop at 7:30 p.m.

Trail Gymnastics is excited to

kick off its 53rd season with an open house this week.

The public is invited to come

check out our facility and fall programs today until Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Greater Trail

Community Skills Centre. The Trail Gymnastics

Club offers recreational pro-grams for ages two to adult with a focus on developing physical literacy.

Physical literacy is important for everyone, but especially important for kids so that they can learn funda-mental movement patterns which will enable them to participate in virtually any sport and set them up to be active for life. Gymnastics teaches many fundamental movement patterns includ-ing springs, swings, rota-tions, landings, statics, locomotions (skipping, gal-loping, hopping, running) and object manipulation.

Other benefits of gym-nastics include balance, strength, agility, flexibility, spatial and air awareness with social and emotional aspects like teamwork, taking turns,

and building self esteem also prevalent.

Our competitive team con-tinues to expand to 30 gymnasts this year from just seven gymnasts three years ago. B.C. switched to the American Junior Olympic (JO) program last year with the rest of Canada following suit for the 2015/16 season. The JO pro-gram has the gymnasts compet-ing compulsory routines in levels 1-5 and optional routines in levels 6-10. We will have five gymnasts competing in the JO program, 12 gymnasts in the High School program, and 13 gymnasts in our Inter-club program which is a performance based introduction to competitive gymnastics. This will be our largest competitive team in recent years.

We offer birthday parties on Saturdays which run from 12:30-2:30 and 3-5 p.m. and they are $150 for up to 20 kids.

We also offer adaptive pro-gramming for special needs ath-letes either integrated or privately one-on-one and we welcome the participation of behavioral inter-

ventionists.Also available are our popular

field trips where you can bring your school class, daycare or com-munity group in for an introduc-tion to gymnastics.

Trail Gymnastics has con-tinued to upgrade our equipment and has recently purchased an airfloor which is a big bouncy tumbling surface as well as a resi-pit, new uneven bars, and numerous foam blocks, wedges, domes and tunnels to entice all kids big and small to have fun while learning.

As the club continues to grow, we are always looking to hire new coaching staff in order to open more spaces in our programs. We offer competitive wages and a flexible schedule, so if you have gymnastics experience please contact us.

For the Open House, parents must accompany their children and sign them in when they arrive at the event. For more informa-tion please visit our website trailgymnastics.ca or email [email protected].

THE ASSOCIATED PRESSNEW YORK - The release of the new Star

Wars movie may still be months off, but Disney is unleashing its full marketing “Force” behind the launch of hundreds of toys and other items related to the film.

The massive marketing blitz, which Disney has named “Force Friday,” spans all kinds of media and included an 18-hour global “unbox-ing” streamed live on YouTube.

Meanwhile, major toy retailers around the world opened their doors and held special events when the toys first became available just after midnight Friday. Among the first cities was Hong Kong with toy stores open at midnight.

The marketing push behind “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” is unique because it’s so far ahead of the movie’s U.S. release, 116 days to be exact. But analysts say it can work because Star Wars is such a popular franchise.

Leaked images of action figures of characters that have not even hit the big screen - like Sarco Plank, some kind of alien desert nomad that has only been glimpsed in a Vanity Fair on-set shoot - are only likely to fuel consumer demand, says Steve Pasierb, CEO of the Toy Industry Association.

“It’s pretty rare, but in the age of social media, you can get those characters out and create buzz around these things in ways that you couldn’t in the past,” Pasierb says. “There’s something easy to tap into, which is the Star Wars mystique which is some 30 years old.”

Industry analysts at PiperJaffrey say they expect some $3 billion worth of Star Wars mer-chandise will be sold this year and that sales next year could be even larger.

Even in a non-movie year, Star Wars mer-chandise has consistently sold well - $2 bil-lion annually around the world, according to Pasierb.

So it’s not so far-fetched that Disney will exceed that in the publicity-blitz filled weeks ahead of premiere of the first Star Wars movie since Episode III in 2005.

Wars’ marketing

Dear Annie: I am the youngest of three girls and have always been the black sheep of the family. I have two sisters who don’t have kids, yet they constantly tell me I’m not a good mother or daughter.

I have always tried to be a good daughter, especially after Dad passed away. My sisters don’t do much for our mom. One lives out of state, so I guess she thinks she doesn’t have to do anything. The other sister calls Mom often, but doesn’t bother to stop by and see her.

Mom is on a limited income. We all work full time and have husbands, but I’m the only one who buys her groceries and takes her places. I recently told my mother how I was feeling about my sisters, and she told me they will never change. And why should they? Mom refuses to ask for any help from the other two. She never asks me to take her shopping, but I know she needs food in her house. I also enjoy spending time with my mom. She’s an awesome woman who worked hard and pro-

vided for her children. I had once before disappeared

from Mom’s life because I was tired of putting up with this nonsense. I didn’t speak to anyone for a year. But I realized my mother won’t be here forever, and we’ve been attached at the hip ever since. Now I’m tired of the nonsense again. What am I supposed to do?

My sisters are perfectly aware of Mom’s needs. I believe they are self-ish. What’s it going to take for them to wake up? I can’t talk to either one of them because it just upsets me. But I can’t go back and keep taking care of Mom all by myself. It gets expensive to do this every week with no help whatsoever. -- The Black Sheep

Dear Sheep: You sound like a car-ing daughter, but you cannot force your sisters to be the same. If you were an only child, would you con-tinue helping Mom? It might be less frustrating for you to think of

yourself that way. However, you may be able to get your sisters to con-tribute financially if it lets them off the hook otherwise. Calmly explain

that Mom’s income lim-its what she can buy at the grocery, and though you are happy to take her shopping and supple-ment her supplies, it is becoming too difficult.

Ask how much they can contribute for these expenses. We hope they come through.

Dear Annie: I felt the need to respond to the letter from “Gary,” wondering about appropriate dress for a funeral. I have attended more wakes and funerals than I can count, and I know what is considered “appropriate” attire.

My husband passed away sud-denly six months ago. We are a quiet family and the attendance at his funeral was astounding and unex-pected. We did not notice what color clothes people wore, their necklines, collars, hemlines, sneakers or boots.

What I can say, unequivocally, is that I, along with our 14-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter couldn’t have cared less what anyone had on. It only mattered that they came. -- Heartbroken in Connecticut

Dear Heartbroken: Thank you for

making it clear what is important. Our condolences.
