TRADITIONAL FOLK

COSTUMEThe structure of Romanian traditional clothing has remained unchanged throughout history and can be traced back to the earliest times. The basic garment for both men and women is a shirt or chemise, which is made from hemp, linen or woollen fabric. This was tied round the waist using a fabric belt, narrow for women and wider for men. In the past those worn by women usually reached to the ankles while men's shirts were shorter and worn over trousers or leggings made from strips of fabric. Women always wear an apron over the chemise. This was initially a single piece of cloth wrapped round the lower part of their bodies and secured by a belt at the waist, as is still seen in the east and south east of Romania. In Transylvania and the south west of Romania this became two separate aprons, one worn at the back and one at the front.

SUGGESTIVE IMAGE OF THE ‘BRAN’ CASTLECommonly known as "Dracula's Castle, it is marketed as the home of the titular character in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

However, this castle has only tangential

associations with Vlad III, voivode

of Wallachia, the inspiration for

Dracula.

THE FAMOUS EASTER EGGS

They say that during the Pesach (the Hebrew

Passover) Virgin Mary came to see her

crucified son. She carried a basket with

eggs, which she laid at the foot of the cross

while praying for Christ. His holy blood dropped

on the eggs and reddened them, so the Lord said: ‘From now on you shall paint the eggs in red to remember my

crucifixion’. In Romania the

tradition of decorating eggs is ancestral.

HOREZU HANDMADE

POT Horezu is one of those

many Romanian heavenly locations, where people

are genuine and traditions are still

preserved. The Horezu pottery has its roots in the dawns of the time. The pottery is shaped

using the traditional kick-wheel. Usually men form the objects and women give the finishing touch,

decorating them. The clay pottery is first

decorated with simple symbols and motifs, from which the most popular

being the Horezu Rooster – Cocosul de Hurez.
